Abhinav Bindra qualified for the 10m Air Rifle event in a nail biting finish that saw him score 105.2 in the final series (total score of 625.7) with three 10.8 scores in the final five shots to climb up from 11th to inside the required top 8.
However it was commiserations for Gagan Narang who finished 23rd with a final score of 621.7. Higher up the order, Nicolo Campriani of Italy set a new Olympic record with a score of 630.2.
Narang started the better of the two Indian shooters with 105.3 and 104.5 in the first two rounds.
But his chances dropped in the series with a poor 102.1.
That got even worse in the fifth series with 101.6. Bindra on his part made good of a miserable fifth series score of 102.1 to regain his place in the top-8 with a remarkable final series.
