A hidden liver compass may help pigeons navigate long distances
Scientists found that homing pigeons use iron-rich immune cells in their liver to sense Earth's magnetic field and navigate. Removing these cells caused the birds to get lost on cloudy days. This could have implications for other animals that rely on magnetic navigation, like bees, bats, whales, and sharks.
