IIT Kharagpur at 75: How India’s first IIT was born in a former colonial prison
IIT Kharagpur, the first IIT in India, marks its 75th anniversary today. It was established in 1951 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and was the first of many IITs. The idea first came under the British rule to produce skilled engineers and researchers. It has since become a prestigious institution with famous alumni such as Sundar Pichai.
