South Africa
Right then, what a T20 World Cup we have just witnessed. Cricket was brought to the States and the people welcomed it with open arms. The Caribbean flavour provided some immaculate excitement and we saw some stellar matches with the minnows making their mark as well. There were numerous moments throughout the tournament that will be forever etched in the memory of the players and the fans alike. Eventually, the two unbeaten teams, India and South Africa rightfully met in the final but only one of them could become the first men's side to win the T20 World Cup without losing a game and it was India who edged the Proteas in a thrilling finale to clinch their second crown. However, as all good things come to an end, this wonderful spectacle has come to an end as well, but we hope, you guys have enjoyed it as much as we have. Until next time then, take care and goodbye!
The moment has now come for Rohit Sharma to go onto the podium and lift that coveted trophy! The Indian players join him on the podium and there are fireworks all around as the buoyant Indian players rejuvenate. The outgoing national team coach, Rahul Dravid watches on but moments later, he too joins the players and the smile on his face says it all.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, says that it is very hard to sum up what they have been through over the last 3-4 years and this is the result of all the hard work that went down over that period. Feels that they know what to do in such high-pressure games and they stuck together as a team today when the backs were against the wall. Tells that they needed this win really bad and a lot has gone behind the scenes. Says that he is really proud of the boys and the management for giving them liberty. States that nobody was in doubt about Virat Kohli's form. Adds that they know the quality he has and come the occasion the big players will stand up. Feels that Virat's experience came through on a wicket where starting was not easy. Lauds Hardik Pandya for bowling that last over. Says that the fans were fantastic and he is sure that people in India will be up late at night, watching this.
Next up, the players of the champion Indian team come up one by one and collect their winners medals.
Aiden Markram, the skipper of South Africa starts by saying that he is gutted for the time being and it will take some time for them to reflect on this excellent campaign. Adds that the bowlers bowled well and didn't have much help from the pitch and it all came to the wire and even though it didn't happen, he is incredibly proud of his players. Mentions that in most of their games in this campaign, it wasn't over till the last ball and things could change quickly but they proved they were worthy finalists and it just didn't happen today. Adds that one thing is guaranteed that they will be known as people who are grounded but very good fighters and it is a proud moment for them.
Next up, the valiant runners-up team, South Africa get their runners-up cheque and the players come up one by one to collect their medals.
West Indian T20 World Cup winner and the man who got them that iconic victory in 2016 against England, 'Remember the Name', Carlos Braithwaite places the Trophy on the podium.
Let's now hear from some of the Indian players. Mohammed Siraj says that his only belief was on Jasprit Bumrah to turn the game around. He says that he can't explain this feeling and that every player's dream is to win the World Cup. Ends by thanking the Almighty for this win. Hardik Pandya is up next for a chat. He says that he is very emotional and has been working hard for the last few months but it wasn't clicking for him. Shares that this win is even more special for him, given how the last six months have been for him. Feels that if you keep working hard, your time to shine will come. Axar Patel is the next man to chime in. He says that this win means everything to him and he always wanted to do something for the team. Shares that he tried to keep it simple and just thought of it as another game. States that he did not think what would happen had he got out. Further says that Rohit Sharma led the side well and the head coach, Rahul Dravid asked them to enjoy and not to take the pressure.
Jasprit Bumrah is the Player of the Tournament. Bumrah says that usually he is the one who tries to keep his emotions in check but the emotions are taking over and it is an unreal feeling. Adds that he is over the moon and his family is here and they have come close on previous occasions but to get your team through is a surreal feeling. Mentions that he was trying to keep himself in a bubble and not think too far ahead. Adds that he doesn't look at it like all the pressure is on him and he tries to take it one over at a time. Ends by saying that it was under run a ball when he came back in the 16th over and the ball was scuffed up and he knew it would reverse a bit.
Virat Kohli is the Player of the Match in the Final for his stellar knock. Kohli starts by saying that this was his last T20 World Cup and feels that it is time for the next generation to take over. Mentions that one day you feel like you cannot get a run and then this happens. Further says that it was a now-or-never kind of situation. Shares that the announcement of this being his last T20 game was an open secret. Adds that he would have announced it even if they had lost the final. Tells that it is difficult to hold emotions back and feels that it is going to sink in later.
Earlier in the game, Rohit Sharma won the toss and had no hesitation batting first which has been the norm for the Indian team - setting targets and defending them throughout this World Cup. After early setbacks and some stellar bowling from the Proteas, Virat Kohli was the beacon of hope for India and played an anchor knock after a fast start. The teams traded blows after blows. Kohli went into overdrive mode after reaching his fifty but the South African pacers managed to end things pretty well.
There are tears in the South African camp as well but those of heartbreak and they could feel the trophy slip out of their grasp in those death overs. Quinton de Kock set the tempo up top and even when the likes of Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram flopped, de Kock and Tristan Stubbs got their side in a position of promise. Stubbs fell and so did de Kock after a while but it really was Heinrich Klaasen who turned on the heat and played the knock of his life at the biggest stage. However, his seemingly title-clinching knock was cut short at a vital stage and from that point on, the Proteas simply couldn't get going. They crumbled under pressure and all eyes were on David Miller but he left things too late and was caught brilliantly in the deep by Suryakumar Yadav which was the final nail in the coffin. So close yet so far for South Africa yet again and their hunt for a maiden ICC trophy at the senior level continues.
India have pulled a rabbit out of the hat here! When Axar Patel conceded 24 runs in that 15th over, everything seemed over but the pacers fought back valiantly and that catch from Suryakumar Yadav really was the cherry on the top. After having set a target of 177 runs for the Proteas, the pacers began on the money and even though they got hit for a few boundaries, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh managed to pick up a wicket each to balance things out. The spinners couldn't deliver and were put away for plenty of runs in the middle overs. Hardik Pandya too stepped up and provided fantastic support to the frontline pacers. The last five overs were simply phenomenal from the Indian pacers and didn't allow South Africa any breathing space and kept the pressure on with dot balls and wickets at the same time. Eventually, their hard work shone through and they managed to defend the score by 7 runs to send over a billion people into ecstasy.
INDIA ARE T20 WORLD CHAMPIONS AFTER 17 YEARS! It's been a long, long wait for India and they now join West Indies and England as the only three teams to have won the Men's T20 World Cup two times. You really couldn't ask for more, what a grand finale we have had here in Barbados and both sides gave it their all! The Indian players are up in ecstasy and the playing field is flooded by the dugout. The crowd is at the top of its lungs and it's another heartbreak for South Africa, they simply couldn't get it done. Rohit Sharma is down in tears, as he was after the 2023 World Cup final - but this time, these are tears of joy. You really have to hand it to the Indian side, they were down and out but what redemption this is for the Men in Blue.

Hardik Pandya to Anrich Nortje, INDIA HAVE PULLED OFF A HEIST TO BECOME THE 2024 ICC MEN'S T20 WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS! Hardik Pandya has done it for the Men in Blue! Absolute ecstasy for Rohit Sharma and his men. Agony for South Africa. Pandya hurls it full and slanting in, on middle and leg, Anrich Nortje backs away to have a swipe across the line. Gets it off the inner half of the bat and it dribbles to deep mid-wicket for just a single and the Proteas are in utter disbelief, spare a thought for them, they fought bravely but the Indians had more experience at this stage. A 7-run victory for the Men in Blue and emotions are running wild on the field.
Anrich Nortje is the new man in for South Africa.

Hardik Pandya to Kagiso Rabada, OUT! STRAIGHT TO THE FIELDER! That should be the game and the World Cup to India! Final nail in the coffin for South Africa. Full and going across the left-hander, on off, Kagiso Rabada looks to get underneath it but only manages to skew it off the toe end of the bat. It goes flat and straight to long off where Suryakumar Yadav takes an easy catch this time.

Hardik Pandya to David Miller, OUT! WHAT A GRAB! SURYAKUMAR YADAV, YOU BEAUTY! Brilliant presence of mind on the ropes and he just might have won the World Cup for India with this effort. David Miller cannot believe it! Just the start to the over India were after. Not the best of deliveries by Pandya as he tries to go full but it comes out as a full toss, outside off, David Miller reaches out to go down town. Looks like he gets just enough on it but Suryakumar Yadav at long off, steadies himself on the ropes, keeps his eyes on the ball all the way through. Takes the catch and releases it just as his momentum takes him beyond the ropes. Comes back in to complete the catch.
Is that a catch? Has Suryakumar Yadav pulled off the most stupendous catch at the most crucial of stages? This catch could go down in cricketing history as one of the greatest if SKY has managed to keep his foot off the ropes. The third umpire is called in and it is a very close call. What an effort and the conclusion is that SKY has managed to avoid the ropes and it will be adjudged OUT!
Hardik Pandya to bowl the final over. South Africa need 16 runs to win, what a phenomenal game this has been. Which side will hold its nerves in the final over? Let's find out.

Drinks break! How is this for a match? It couldn't be better poised halfway into the chase and neither side is backing down. After an early blitz from Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, South Africa managed to get away with a fine partnership between Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs but Stubbs fell and the Proteas have to rebuild a bit again. Heinrich Klaasen is their main weapon against spin and it will be interesting to see how that match-up stacks up.

We are back for the all important run chase. The umpires are back out in the middle and so are the players of India. Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock will be the opening pair for South Africa. Arshdeep Singh will get things underway with the ball. Let's play...
... INNINGS BREAK ...
Right then, the summit clash is nicely poised at the halfway mark. India will have to bowl smartly to defend the total and they have the resources to get the job done. A good Powerplay will put South Africa in good stead for the rest of the chase. Back in a bit for the second essay.
Keshav Maharaj is in for a chat. He says that he was trying to use the surface and the breeze. Adds that the surface was slow to begin with but has gotten better now. Reckons that the catching and the outfielding was superb. Mentions that the boys are ready to go and hopefully, they can grab it with both hands.
As for South Africa, the move to start with spin from one end paid dividends as Keshav Maharaj struck twice in his opening over. Kagiso Rabada soon got into the act, resulting in the Powerplay belonging to South Africa. In the middle phase, South Africa allowed a partnership to build as through Axar Patel, India counter-punched. Maharaj, Rabada, Shamsi and Nortje bowled well in that middle phase but Marco Jansen was all over the place with his lines and lengths. Jansen could not keep the runs in check towards the death either but Nortje exhibited brilliant death bowling skills to keep India under 180.
Anrich Nortje closes the innings out with a wicket but India managed to score 42 runs off the last 3 overs to end up with 176 on the board. Given that they were three down inside the Powerplay, India will take this total. Through Virat Kohli's three boundaries off Marco Jansen, the Men in Blue got going straightaway. Though not much went their way in the next 5 overs of the Powerplay, losing 3 wickets. Virat Kohli and Axar Patel then got together to steady the ship. Sent into to take the spinners on, Axar performed the role with aplomb while Kohli dealt in ones and twos. The 72-run stand allowed India to get back into the contest and after Axar fell, Kohli took matters into his own hands. Having slowed down in the middle phase, Kohli pressed on the accelerator towards the back end for a strong Indian finish.

Kagiso Rabada to Virat Kohli, OUT! RUN OUT! Outstanding work by Quinton de Kock and South Africa are cock-a-hoop! Axar Patel was lazy in turning back and he paid the ultimate price. On a back of a length and angling in, around the pads, Virat Kohli misses out on glancing it away. It comes off his pads and rolls to the left of the keeper, Quinton de Kock. Axar Patel sets off for the run but gets sent back by Kohli. Axar is slow to retreat and he is not expecting de Kock to fire the throw in. De Kock removes his gloves, swoops in and hits the stumps at the bowling end. The ball deflects off the stumps and touches the long on fence. South Africa start to celebrate and the third umpire is called into action. The replays show that Axar was slow to react and is caught short of his crease. He fails to make his ground despite the stretch.
Shivam Dube is the new man in.
Now then, drama! Has Axar Patel been caught napping? Quinton de Kock is celebrating and we have the third umpire in play for a run-out check against Patel.

Marco Jansen to Axar Patel, In the air...but safe! Jansen comes from over the wicket and takes pace off straight away, on a length, outside off, Axar Patel loses his shape as he swings a bit too hard to go big on the leg side. Gets a thickish outside edge that flies down to deep third. Kagiso Rabada almost overruns it as the ball spins away from him but adjusts well to make the stop with his left hand. A single taken.
Drinks break! Well, this has been an eventful start to the summit clash. After the first over that went for 15 runs, South Africa fought back through Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada to take the Powerplay honours. Due to the loss of those three wickets, India have had to rebuild with Axar Patel performing the aggressor role while Virat Kohli has been happy to knock it around. On what looks like a pretty good batting surface, India will have to keep wickets in hand to accelerate at the back end whereas South Africa will have to chip away at the wickets to limit the opponent to a manageable total here.

Keshav Maharaj to Rishabh Pant, OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Two in the over for Keshav Maharaj! Just the kind of over South Africa needed after an expensive first over from Jansen. Maharaj loops it up nicely, on a fullish length, on off, Rishabh Pant reaches out in front as he looks to take it on the full and execute the sweep. Ends up getting a top edge on it and it balloons behind the wicket towards the keeper, Quinton de Kock who turns around and grabs it. Pant stands his group and the two umpires converge. They send it upstairs to check for a bump ball. The third umpire looks at a couple of angles, first front on and then side on and confirms that the ball had come straight off the top edge and at no point did the ball make any contact with the turf.
Is that out? Quinton de Kock takes the catch and reckons Rishabh Pant is a goner here. The two umpires come together and have a chat regarding a bump ball and then go upstairs. The two umpires make their way out to the middle and take their positions followed by the players of South Africa who spread out on the field. It will be the skipper, Rohit Sharma who will open the innings alongside Virat Kohli as usual for India. Marco Jansen has the new ball in hand and is raring to go against Rohit just as he did last year in the ODI World Cup. Let's play...
We are minutes away from the start of an epic encounter between two quality sides and there are high stakes here. But first, that coveted T20 World Cup Trophy is brought out to be showcased by the honorable Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley and 'the Universe Boss' aka Chris Gayle. Next up, the two sets of players make their way out to the middle along with their mascots and line up for their respective national anthems and it will be extra special given it is a monumental occasion. It will be the national anthem of India first, followed by that of South Africa.
PITCH REPORT - Nasser Hussain is pitchside. He starts by saying that there is a 30 percent chance of rain but hopefully, it stays away and it is the central pitch that will be used for the Final. Adds that there is a short boundary on one side of the square around 56 meters and 71 meters on the other side. Ian Bishop says that the rolling has been done nicely on the pitch and there isn't live grass. Reckons the pitch is hard and adds that there have been more wickets for seamers at this venue than any other venue in the West Indies. Says that the reason for this is that when pacers go into the pitch here, it gets hard to hit down the ground.
The captain of South Africa, Aiden Markram says that they would have batted first as well. Tells that the pitch looks dry but they will have the first crack with the ball and they hope to do well. Shares that at times, they have managed to do well despite being not at their best and they have taken confidence from those wins. Feels that having never played a final in a Men's ICC event, there is no pressure on them and this is a fantastic opportunity. Informs that they are playing with the same team as the last game.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of India says that it looks like a good pitch and they have played one game here. Mentions that it is about individual roles and it is all about keeping calm and taking it like just another game against a world-class team. Adds that South Africa have played excellent cricket and so have they, which will make it a great contest. Further adds that it is all about coming together as a unit and ends by informing that they have made no changes to the side.
India (Unchanged Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah.
South Africa (Unchanged Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram (C), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi.
TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in the favour of Rohit Sharma. India have opted to BAT first.
For those of you wondering about the current weather conditions, we are happy to inform you that it is bright and sunny in Bridgetown at the moment. The players are going through their warm-ups and the toss and first ball should take place on time, barring any sudden showers.
With challenging surfaces on offer throughout the World Cup, the team that has adapted quicker and better has often come out on top, and that should be the case again in the final. The overhead conditions will be just as important with the possibility of rain. For the final, a reserve day has been allocated, so there will be 190 minutes of extra time before the overs are reduced. It was 250 minutes of extra time for the semifinal between England and India due to there being no reserve day. India are seeking their second Men's T20 World Cup title, while South Africa are chasing their first, be it ODI or T20. Who will reign supreme? Come, let's find out.
On the other hand, after seven previous unsuccessful attempts, South Africa have finally reached their first-ever Men's World Cup final. Game after game, the Proteas have found ways to pull through, and now they stand on the cusp of shedding the unwanted 'chokers' tag once and for all. With both bat and ball, the Aiden Markram-led unit has been thoroughly tested throughout their campaign, but their toughest challenge awaits, and they expect nothing less. In 2014, Aiden Markram led South Africa to their first-ever Under-19 World Cup title, and now, 10 years later, he has the opportunity to achieve silverware with the senior team. The stage is set for Markram and his men to create history and bring the much-awaited glory to South African cricket.
Unbeaten as they were a few months ago at the ODI World Cup before faltering at the final hurdle, India have glory in their sights once again. Rohit Sharma and his team are determined to end the wait of more than a decade for an ICC trophy and give their head coach, Rahul Dravid, a fitting farewell. The Men in Blue have enjoyed pretty straightforward games throughout the tournament barring a close contest against rivals Pakistan before being tested with the bat against the USA as well and they will remain wary of the formidable threat posed by their opponents. Since the semifinal debacle against England in 2022, Rohit Sharma has been the driving force behind India’s 'no holds barred' batting approach. Now, he stands just one step away from completing a remarkable redemption arc.
The day of reckoning has arrived! It's the day of the final of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The journey of the sport's biggest-ever event, which began with 20 teams, has reached its climax. After weeks of exhilarating cricket, 18 teams have fallen, and now only two remain in the quest for ultimate glory. India and South Africa stand on the brink of immortality, and only the stronger will etch their name in cricketing history. Whichever team wins, one thing is certain - history will be made, as no team has ever gone unbeaten to clinch a Men's T20 World Cup title. With that, hello and welcome from Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, which is all decked up to host the summit clash.
... MATCH DAY ...
After weeks of thrilling matches, jaw-dropping performances, and enough drama to fill a season of your favorite TV show, we've finally arrived at the big dance. The Grand Finale of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, is here, and it's shaping up to be an absolute cracker. The two best and unbeaten sides have graced this tournament with their highest cricketing standards. In one corner, wearing blue and carrying the hopes of over a billion fans, we have India. Conversely, it's South Africa, donning green and yellow and ready to roar. They've treated all of us to some of the finest T20 cricket we've ever seen. Let’s first talk about the Men in Blue. They aren't just here to play, they're on a mission with the fire of a decade's worth of determination and wait behind them. Cast your mind back to 2013. That's when India last lifted an ICC trophy. But since then? It's been a roller coaster of 'almost there' moments and heartbreaking near-misses. Cricket can be a cruel mistress, and Team India knows this all too well. The last decade has been a series of gut-wrenching near-misses for the Men in Blue. From the heartbreak of the 2014 T20 World Cup final to semifinal exits in 2015 and 2016 World Cups of both formats, the pain has been real. Let's not forget those two World Test Championship finals that slipped through their fingers. And just when fans thought it couldn't get worse, along came the brutal Novembers of 2022 and 2023, leaving scars that are still fresh and keep stinging. Each defeat has been a tough pill to swallow, but it's also fueled India's burning desire to reclaim glory. This time around, there's a different energy in the Indian camp. They've already shown they mean business in this tournament. First up, they squared the ledger with Australia, exacting sweet revenge for that heartbreaking loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. But they didn't stop there. Remember that crushing 10-wicket defeat against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semis? Well, India just flipped the script on the defending champs, sending them packing in a display of sheer dominance by dismantling them. It's like India's been keeping a checklist of past disappointments and methodically crossing them off. Rohit Sharma's been on a rampage and just might have overcome his dilemma against the left-armers. The skipper's leading by example, blasting bowlers from ball one. With a sky-high strike rate and runs flowing, he's setting the perfect tone for India and is truly living up to his HitMan tag. However, Virat Kohli’s lean patch remains a big, big worry but it's Kohli, after all, the man who usually feasts on big matches with his gracious strokes. He has the most number of runs in the T20 WC knockouts for India with a jaw-dropping average of 99. Overall, India's looking rock-solid from top to bottom. The middle order's been clutch, stepping up when needed, and the bowlers spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah and the crafty spin trio, are on fire, giving batters nightmares. With almost every part of the team clicking, India's showing what a complete side looks like. Delving into South Africa now. Despite boasting generations of cricketing greats, from Hensie Cronje to Jacques Kallis, from Graeme Smith to AB de Villiers, and Dale Steyn to Kagiso Rabada, this ‘Rainbow Nation’s’ trophy cabinet has been gathering dust, well, unfortunately. Their lone brush with glory? A solitary ICC final win way back in the 1998 Champions Trophy. Since then, it's been a long, dry spell for this talented cricketing nation. They've had the players, they've had the skills, but that elusive ICC trophy has always slipped through their fingers. But it has been a story of dominance this time. Learning from the past, they have averted those heart-wrenching defeats that used to trip them up. Just like India, they've stayed cool and unbeatable and are coming on the back of blowing Afghanistan away in the wind in the first semifinal. Quinton de Kock has been on fire, and while Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram have been tricky, the middle order has covered any gaps. But the real standout has been their bowling. The pace trio of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Marco Jansen have been absolutely ruthless and lightning-fast. Be it Durban, Nottingham, Colombo, or be it Dhaka, or Perth, India versus South Africa in the T20 World Cups has always lived up to its hype with a 4-2 edge to India. However, South Africa won’t forget the way they defeated the Men in Blue at Perth a couple of years back in the Super 12. It has been that kind of rivalry where the records take a backseat. This South African side has strode with a lot of grit and belief to finally put the stereotypes to bed and finally have that piece of silverware gracing the cabinet. But surely the Indian juggernaut won’t let them breathe easily as they too, are here to heal their past wounds. Now, let's turn our attention to the beautifully adorned Kensington Oval in Barbados, where the much-anticipated finale will unfold. This ground has witnessed some high-scoring encounters, with the first inning score of 200 plus being achieved once, while the average score remains around 170. Pitches at this venue are conducive to spin-bowling as the bounce and turn vary a lot. Also, the wind factor holds a key as well as it breezes, a lot. However, chasing hasn't been a walk in the park, with the highest successful chase being 157. Out of the 8 matches played here, the chasing team has tasted victory only 3 times with a game going into the Super Over once. With both sides boasting a good balance in both departments, it is surely not going to be a one-sided affair. It will be a battle between Kohli’s masterclass vs Rabada's relentless bowling, shouldered by Kuldeep’s crafty variations and Klaasen’s brute force. Many such in-match contests and match-ups to look forward to. Who do you think will win the illustrious trophy? Will India add the second star, or will South Africa clinch their maiden T20 World Cup title in their maiden finale appearance? Only time will tell. Which side do you think will dominate?
