The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the biggest franchise-based cricket league in the world, starts off on March 22 (Saturday) with a clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Eden Gardens. The IPL 2025 final will be held on May 25.

In terms of all-time batting records, Indian cricket talisman Virat Kohli is the leading run-scorer in the league (before the IPL 2025 season begins) with 8,004 runs from 252 innings. He has scored eight hundreds and 55 half-centuries. Shikhar Dhawan is second in the table with 6,669 runs from 221 innings. Rohit Sharma (6,628 runs) overtook David Warner (6,565 runs) in third spot after the 2024 season. But the Australian is the only foreign player in the top 5 with Suresh Raina (5,528) closing out the top 5.

Kohli also holds the record for most runs scored in a single IPL season: 973 in 2016.

In terms of all-time bowling records, India’s wily spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is the leading wicket-taker in the league (before the IPL 2025 season begins) with 205 from 159 innings. He has claimed one five-wicket haul in the league complemented by six four-wicket hauls. Piyush Chawla overtook West Indies’ Dwayne Bravo in the second spot in the table with 192 wickets from 192 innings.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (181 wickets) and Sunil Narine (180) round up the top 5 after 17 seasons of IPL.
