It's time to bring down the curtain on the 14th season of the Indian T20 League. Things won't be the same in the next edition with this League set to go through plenty of changes. As the saying goes, onwards and upwards. The next pitstop for all of us is the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 and it's starting from 17th October with the match between Oman and Papua New Guinea at 2 pm local (10 am GMT). We would love to have your company again. Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!
Sourav Ganguly hands over the trophy to MS Dhoni! As usual, MS quickly hands it to someone else, seems it's Deepak Chahar on this occasion. They all line up for the cameras. You will get to see plenty of these photographs in the coming days on social media. Time to celebrate!
The crowd goes bonkers as MS Dhoni comes up for an interview! MSD starts by praising Kolkata for the way they bounced back and feels that the break really helped them. Tells that Chennai shuffled a few players and it was important to define responsibilities. Tells that every final is special and looking at the stats, you can also say they are the most consistent team that loses in the final, but in those games, there were moments that they lost. Shares that this was something they made a conscious effort to improve on. Hopes that Chennai will keep working on it in future as well. Adds that they didn't talk a lot and it was more about one-on-one sessions. Feels that the moment you get into a team room, the pressure starts to build. States that the practise sessions have been brilliant where they have communicated with the boys. Thanks the fans and says that this is something you crave for as cricketers. Hopes that next season they will go back to Chepauk. On leaving his legacy behind, Dhoni chuckles and replies he is not sure he has left it behind just yet.
Stephen Fleming, the Chennai head coach, says that getting over the line was one of the challenges and he is happy to get over the line. Adds that they value youth but in pressure situations, the experience can add so much. States that they are comfortable playing experienced guys as well as youth. Says that they involve gut feelings and instincts, and need to understand players. States that years have gone by and this is a wonderful tournament and he is pleased to be with one franchise.
Eoin Morgan, the Kolkata skipper, says that he is extremely proud of the fight that they showed throughout the tournament. Tells that their character epitomizes Kolkata's values and is very happy with the support from the management. Thanks the fans as well, as they supported them throughout. On their openers, Morgan shares that they have been outstanding and says that Gill is a classy player and Iyer is a good find and he has a good head on his shoulders. On Rahul Tripathi, Morgan says that he picked up an injury in this game but he gave it his all in the last couple of games.
Brendon McCullum, the head coach of Kolkata, collects the runners-up award on behalf of his team. The Kiwi is super proud of how they have played and he congratulates Chennai as they have won the title and have been a strong side. Adds that they will remember this for a while, even though they did not win. Feels that losing in the final means that there is a lot of what-if questions but he is happy with how the young Indian boys stepped up. Adds that they got a couple of things right and is super proud of an amazing campaign. Hopes that they can continue to play the same in the next year and appreciates the support from the team management.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is the proud owner of the Orange Cap for smashing 635 runs in this edition at an average of 45.35 and a strike rate of 136.26.
Harshal Patel wins the Purple Cap for picking 32 wickets in this season and is also chosen for the MVP award. In a recorded message, Patel thanked everyone and said that it means a lot to him and added that it would have been nicer had Bangalore qualified for the final. He thanked all the support staff and the team members for backing him.
Faf du Plessis is the Man of the Match! The South African says that he is really grateful and is feeling proud of what they have achieved this season. Shares that it was a great day and it was his 100th game in the Indian T20 League which makes it even more special. Adds that he has loved his time with Chennai and it's a great place to play cricket. Tells us that number 4 in the trophy cabinet is really good. On Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf replies that he is a special talent and Indian cricket is blessed to have him. Further says that Gaikwad has got a great head on his shoulders, he is humble and has a super bright future.
Stay tuned for the presentation...
Ravindra Jadeja says he is feeling amazing and they have worked very hard to win the title and it feels good to finally win it. On his catch of Narine, Jadeja says that it went very high and he looked at Moeen and just went for the catch and is happy to have taken it. Feels that catch changed the momentum for them. Shares that Bravo is going to entertain them the whole night.
Dwayne Bravo says that he is very happy with the effort. Adds that they have continuity and belief in the squad and they believe in the core of the squad. Tells that in 4 years, they have won two titles and this was a complete team effort. Says that he does not get nervous and the players have performed well in different phases. Deepak Chahar says that there were ups and downs this season. Adds that he is very happy winning this tournament. Goes on to say that there was dew but it was important to handle pressure in a big game like this. States that they capitalized with the bat. Mentions that they have qualified almost every season and they were confident of doing well. States that they all play for MS Dhoni and he is the captain of the ship.
Josh Hazlewood says that he is feeling fantastic and it's awesome to be a part of Chennai. Adds that he has learnt heaps and there are a lot of seniors to learn from, especially DJ Bravo. Shares that he will have a little bit of downtime and then he will jump straight into the T20 World Cup. Further says that he has got a good preparation on these pitches ahead of the mega event.
Robin Uthappa is feeling grateful. Says that it was a lean last season for them and it was important to play well in 2021. Adds that he just wanted to contribute to the team's success and wanted to take advantage of the start in this game. Mentions that Chennai have a secured atmosphere in the group and there is clarity of thoughts which is very important. Feels that the players not playing in the XI create the atmosphere.
Ruturaj Gaikwad says that it's a great feeling to win the Orange Cap and also the trophy. Mentions that he is feeling great and shares that they didn't have a great last season but they believed in themselves and they are happy that it happened in this season. Adds that he has not changed his batting style and is confident about his shots. Mentions that there are times when you have to dig deep and carry the team.
Moeen Ali says that he is feeling amazing and can't describe it in words. Calls Gaikwad an amazing player and tells that he is so calm and hopes that he will represent India in the future. Praises Dhoni for his captaincy and the way he backed him. Tells that you cannot buy experience and it's a great team to be a part of.
Plenty of interviews lined up...
What a season for Chennai! They have bounced back brilliantly from the disappointment of 2020 and added yet another trophy to their cabinet. After losing the toss, it was important for Chennai to start well. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis did the job and then the latter extended his stay in the middle. Robin Uthappa and Moeen Ali showed the right intent to never let the tempo down and Chennai managed a big total on the board. Their bowling was below-par at the start and MS Dhoni dropping Venkatesh Iyer for a nought cost them in the first half. But it was always a matter of one breakthrough and as soon as that arrived, Chennai forced a collapse. From the wreckage to recovery, in a nutshell, that was the story with the ball for Chennai as all their bowlers struck the right chords in the second half. Shardul Thakur brought the first two wickets and the rest chipped in as well to run away with the trophy.
Kolkata had a mountain of a target to conquer and they started in the best possible manner. Once again Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer provided them with an excellent platform of 91 runs but the chase nosedived after Iyer's departure. Rana came and went in no time and Narine too failed to contribute. It was a steady procession of wickets for Kolkata as Chennai squeezed them under the scoreboard pressure. Middle order was the soft underbelly of Kolkata and that was tickled by Chennai to gain the winning control on this final. Twice Kolkata lost two wickets in one over and you cannot afford that in a demanding chase. The defeat was not just inescapable but imminent.
CHENNAI ARE THE CHAMPIONS! They've etched their name on the trophy for the fourth time in the history of this tournament. What a clinical performance! Their players are jumping in celebration, absolute scenes out there, you can feel the excitement in the air. The party has just begun and it will go deep into the night.

Ravindra Jadeja to Shakib Al Hasan, OUT! LBW! You just cannot keep Ravindra Jadeja out of the game! Chennai are all over Kolkata at the moment and we can see some glum faces among the Kolkata fans. Jadeja bowls a quicker ball on middle, Shakib Al Hasan looks to flick but misses and gets rapped on the pads. An appeal is made and the finger has gone up. Plumb in front.
Strategic Time-Out! Well, in the span of a couple of overs, Chennai have gained a chokehold on this game. Kolkata were going along nicely and were at 91/0, but after that first wicket fell, and the Men in Purple and Gold just kept losing wickets. They are at 120/6 now, needing 73 more from the last 5 overs. Things are looking bleak for Kolkata as they just have one proven batter, in Eoin Morgan, out in the middle. Rahul Tripathi injured himself earlier on and it will be interesting to see if he can bat well and support his captain. Let's see how these final 5 overs of the Indian T20 League, 2021 go!

Is that stumping? First, they will check the UltraEdge to make sure there was no bat on this. No spike is detected. The back foot never left the crease. Shakib Al Hasan is safe.
Shakib Al Hasan is the new man in. No signs of Rahul Tripathi.

Ravindra Jadeja to Shubman Gill, Outside off, pushed to point.
CAUGHT? Nopes. Drama! It is a DEAD BALL! Oh, wow! Chennai would have thought that they got the wicket but since the ball touched the cable of the Spidercam, it has been ruled a dead ball and Gill survives. A tossed up ball, around middle, Shubman Gill toe-ends his shot high in the air on the leg side. Ambati Rayudu runs in and takes the catch at mid-wicket. Gill is walking back but has been asked to wait. It seems that the ball has hit the Spidercam cable and it has been called a dead ball. Dhoni does not look happy and it's a reprieve for Shubman Gill.

We are back for one final time in the 2021 Indian T20 League. Kolkata need 193 runs to win. The Chennai players stride out to the middle and are followed by Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer. Deepak Chahar will start with the ball for Chennai.
... RUN CHASE ...
Right then, Kolkata have a mountain of a target to conquer. If they do it, they will equal Chennai with three trophies. Can they do it? Stay tuned to find out.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is there for a chat. Shares that he is a good player of spin and his plan was to attack Shakib Al Hasan. Adds that the pitch is stopping a bit and they played really well to reach 192. Tells that he thinks that it is enough but they need to bowl and field well. On Faf du Plessis coming close to overtaking him on the list of the leading run-scorers this season, Ruturaj Gaikwad replies that he was not aware of that and wanted Faf du Plessis to hit a six on the last ball.
Intent - that's the best word to describe Chennai's batting. They took their time in the first two overs but after that, their openers took the charge. 50 in the Powerplay and the platform was set for Chennai to capitalize. Kolkata are known for pulling things back in the middle overs through their spinners but they faltered this evening. One thing worth mentioning here is that Chennai never let the tempo of their innings go down. Robin Uthappa walked in and batted with a strike rate in excess of 200 and didn't allow Kolkata to settle in the middle phase. Moeen Ali did the same in the end overs. It's been an evening to forget for Kolkata so far. Their bowling failed to deliver when it mattered the most. Apart from Sunil Narine, everyone suffered.
A big final and Faf du Plessis took it by storm! What a knock by him! His innings along with the partnerships that he constructed with Gaikwad, Uthappa and Moeen has powered Chennai to a very imposing total on the board.
A fantastic final over by Shivam Mavi and he has stopped Chennai from crossing the 200-run mark. Still, the pressure of the final will be there so you can easily add 15-20 runs to the total. Dew could be a factor, so let's see what happens.

Shivam Mavi to Faf du Plessis, OUT! TAKEN! A wicket on the final ball of the innings. Faf du Plessis was looking to end the innings on a high but he loses his wicket. He will not care though as he has done what was needed from him. A length delivery, on middle, Faf du Plessis hits this one hard towards long on. Looks like it will fly over the ropes, but the shot does not have enough wings to do so. Venkatesh Iyer holds onto this in the deep. CHENNAI END ON 192/3!

They have a solid platform set for a big finish. Faf du Plessis is set and now they will hope the batters coming in can keep the runs flowing. Are you readyyyyyy? The grand finale of the Indian T20 League, 2021 is close to getting underway. First, the Kolkata players make their way out into the middle and look to spread out to their respective positions out on the field. Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad will open the innings for Chennai and they stride out now. It will be some spin to get this final underway as Shakib Al Hasan will begin proceedings with the ball. Here he comes...
Did you know? Kolkata have won all six matches when they were chasing a target in the UAE leg of this edition. They have got the chance to execute their winning formula again. But... if we consider the last 13 finals of the Indian T20 League, the team batting first has won 8 times. Who has the advantage?
Brendon McCullum, the Kolkata coach, is up for a chat. The Kiwi says that he just tries to spend time with the guys and make sure that they follow the processes and they are relaxed as well. Adds that they pick them off one by one and spend a lot of time, but it is not easy. Goes on to say that being in a bubble has been beneficial for them. States that enjoyment is the key and when they came for the second half, they needed to let go of the past and trust the team. Adds that he truly believes that they can win.
MS Dhoni, the Chennai skipper, says that they wanted to bowl first as well. Feels that initially the ball stops a bit and as the game progresses, it settles down slightly. Adds that they cannot control the toss and are prepared for both. Tells us that it has been a long journey and mainly with the franchise cricket and it feels good to complete 300 T20 games as captain. Informs that they are playing the same team. Regarding having a few extra days to relax is good or bad, Dhoni replies that often what really dictates terms is the result and mentions that they are equipped to deal with any situation.
The captain of Kolkata, Eoin Morgan, says that they will bowl first and the wicket looks good, slightly dry and there has been dew in the last couple of games. Adds that it takes hard work and determination to win any trophy and this has been a 2-year journey for Kolkata to try and lift the trophy and they will try to give it their all. Informs that they are unchanged from the last game. Tells that the fact that they are in the final means that his captaincy has been good, but he has been short on runs with his batting and hopes that he comes good today.
Chennai (Unchanged Playing XI) - Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, MS Dhoni (C/WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Josh Hazlewood.
Kolkata (Unchanged Playing XI) - Shubman Gill, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan (C), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Sunil Narine, Shakib Al Hasan, Lockie Ferguson, Shivam Mavi, Varun Chakravarthy.
Toss - MS Dhoni and Eoin Morgan are in the middle for the all-important toss. MS flips the coin, Heads is the call and it is Heads. KOLKATA ELECT TO BOWL!
Pitch report - Simon Doull and Matthew Hayden are near the surface to inspect the conditions. The Kiwi starts by saying that both sides would like to bowl first as that has been the trend here in Dubai (the last 8 matches have been won while chasing). Hayden adds that this is a cracking wicket and he reckons that 170 is on the cards. Simon Doull reminds us that Chennai defended 156 on this very pitch which was last used on 19th September. He signs off by saying that it looks a belter.
You can't ignore the leadership of Dhoni and Morgan. Their bats have largely remained silent but their captaincy has been roaring. As Harsha Bhogle tweeted a day back - 'In franchise T20 cricket, a good captain is almost worth two players!' Mahi or Moggie, whose captaincy will steal the show this evening?
Battle of the heavyweights! Both Chennai and Kolkata have displayed excellent consistency in this edition, the former from the start and the latter in the second phase. The roadmap to the finale for them has been quite similar. Batting of the top order and the variety in the bowling attack are the main reasons for their success and there have been odd contributions from the middle order as well. However, the middle order batting has been the soft underbelly for these two sides and that area could be targeted this evening. Who will stand taller?
We all know how Eoin Morgan scripted England's renaissance in the shorter formats of the game, and how Brendon McCullum revived New Zealand's fortunes with his aggressive style of captaincy. When two people of the same quality meet, they end up building a winning team. It took time but eventually, Kolkata have blossomed into a fearless unit, capable of taking down any team. They've two trophies so far but it's been so long that they reached this grand stage. Now the time has come to end this drought and add the third title to their name.
MS Dhoni has built a legacy for himself and under him, Chennai have seen more highs than lows. 2020 was an aberration in the rich history of this franchise under MSD but they quickly left that behind and once again find themselves on the cusp of glory. It was vintage Dhoni in Qualifier 1 and his 6-ball winning cameo sent the world of cricket into a frenzy. The fire is still burning and everyone would be wishing for one final firework from him. You never know, this could be Dhoni's last League game as a player for Chennai. Enjoy till it lasts!
Chennai versus Kolkata! If not Mumbai, these two teams know how to win trophies and repeat it as well. One more piece of silverware is waiting to dazzle their cabinet but only one can have it - who will it be? Will Dubai get painted in 'Yellove' or are we going to see the City of Gold glitter in 'Purple and Gold'? All the answers lie ahead.
That much-awaited evening has finally arrived! Dubai, a city known for its riches, is going to witness this incredible moment of one team getting crowned as the champions of this amazing League. This season has been full of drama and fun, and let's wish for a game worthy of a grand finale. On that note, allow us to welcome you all for one last time in the 14th edition of the Indian T20 League. Sit back and enjoy all the action...
