Up for a quick chat - Shimron Hetmyer says the outing was a mix of good and bad. The good was being out in the middle and contributing, while the bad was just how hot it was out there. He jokes that it seemed like he was the only one really feeling the heat, adding that he even asked the umpires, who told him they did not feel it as much. He says the key for him is batting with a clear mind and being ready to cash in whenever the ball is there to be hit. He adds that everyone knows that the West Indies are a strong boundary-hitting side, but where they can fall short at times is in managing singles and dot balls, and that is something they are keen to improve by limiting the number of dots.

Hetmyer's swashbuckling knock - Hetmyer was at his brutal best, racing to a 22-ball fifty and setting a new record as the fastest West Indian to reach the mark in a T20 World Cup. Powell eventually fell when Currie snapped the partnership, but by then the rescue job was done and the stage was set perfectly for a big finish. Sherfane Rutherford came out swinging and through his cameo of 26 runs, he ensured that the scoring never dipped. Scotland couldn't string wickets regularly in that middle phase and their bowlers were taken apart. Brad Currie was the only one with an economy of under 6. It would require a strong start for Scotland to scale down this target against a West Indian bowling attack that has quality aplenty. Should be an interesting chase ahead. Stay tuned.

A solid resurrection in the middle overs - Shimron Hetmyer may have touched down in India late, but he made sure no one missed his arrival. Walking in with West Indies wobbling, he joined forces with Rovman Powell and completely changed the tone of the innings. Their counterpunching stand of 81 dragged the Men in Maroon out of trouble and turned the middle overs into a scoring spree, with 105 runs hammered between overs 7 and 15.

A cagey start, no freebies early - Scotland showed a lot of discipline with the new ball and didn't allow any sort of freedom for the West Indian openers to tee off from the outset. Hope and King played a few ambitious strokes, but were rather watchful in the Powerplay. Scots didn't get any wickets during the field restrictions as West Indies crawled to 33/0 in the first six. In an attempt to accelerate, both the openers were dismissed in quick time, which pushed West Indies for another rebuild with 66/2 on the board at halfway.

A strong finish in the end - West Indies were barely ticking at a run a ball through the first half, but the backend told a very different story as they blasted 116 runs in the last ten overs. Scotland did claw back a bit of control at the death, conceding just 15 runs across the last two, but the damage had already been done. From a sluggish start to a commanding finish, West Indies still ended up with a hefty total on the board and would be the happier of the two sides walking back in the dugout.

Romario Shepherd does not pick the slower one and swings way too early. The ball sneaks under his blade and Matthew Cross manages to get his body behind the ball. The ball catches the toe end of the blade but it clears the straight boundary. The long on and long off fielders got around but only watched it sailed over the fence.

Romario Shepherd clears the front leg and gives it a heave but the ball goes over his blade. Matthew Cross, standing up to the stumps, manages to make the stop.

Brad Currie to Sherfane Rutherford, OUT! CAUGHT! Back-to-back wickets for Scotland. Currie does not offer any pace, on a back of a length, outside off, Rutherford stays on the back foot and has a big swing at it. Neither does he get the elevation, nor is it wide enough of the fielder in the deep. Hits it flat and straight down the throat of deep cover, where Michael Jones makes no mistake. Brandon reaches out with his hands. The ball threatens to pop out of his left hand, but he just about manages to cling on. End of an impactful knock from Hetmyer, 64 runs off 36 balls.

Is that a clean catch by McMullen? Oh, hang on, the on-umpires look satisfied with the catch, but they are actually checking for the legality of the delivery. The side-on replay comes up and the third umpire confirms that the ball is dipping below the waist height of the batter.

Adds that they would have probably bowled as well. He highlights the fond memories the side has at this venue from a decade ago, while mentioning that he wasn’t part of the setup at the time. Also points out that there were a couple of guys from that camp who now have a lot of experience. On Hetmyer, he says that he arrived a little late but is ready to go. On the responsibility of captaincy, he says he relishes the role, describing it as very special. Shares that whenever you represent the region, it is a great feeling.

The captain of Scotland - Richie Berrington calls it a fantastic opportunity for the group, especially with the quick turnaround coming into the tournament, and says there is a really positive feeling in the camp. Berrington shares that the squad was actually scheduled to have a fitness test today, if not for the late World Cup call. He points to Scotland’s strong performances at the last World Cup as proof of what they can do and says this is another opportunity to show their quality on the big stage. Berrington also speaks about the good memories from their previous win against West Indies, but acknowledges the quality of the opposition and says he hopes his players can show the depth and quality within their own team.

Pakistan hold their nerve - How about that for the start of the World Cup, aye? A nerve-jangling opener it was in Colombo. Pakistan have defeated Netherlands by 3 wickets, with just 3 balls to spare. Thanks to Faheem Ashraf, who played a sensational finishing role. He smashed 24 runs in the penultimate over against Logan van Beek and got the job done for his side by smashing a boundary in the final over. But credit to the Dutchmen for fighting their hearts out in their defence of a below-par total. 

A thriller in Colombo - In the curtain raiser of this tournament, the Dutch are on the verge of something truly historic. After setting a modest target of 148 against Pakistan, they have counterpunched in a brilliant fashion. Pakistan are 7 wickets down, and they require 29 runs from the last two overs. What do the records say? West Indies have played five matches in Kolkata, but outside of their watershed 2016 World Cup victory over England, the venue has largely been unkind to them with a 1-4 win-loss record in T20Is. And with a 1-0 head-to-head record in favor of the Scots, the men from the Caribbean arrive with a point to prove and resurrect the respect and legacy in the format in which they were once so dangerous and imposing.
