Welcome back for Sri Lanka's reply with the bat. Looking at the overhead conditions, don't think we would be getting all the overs in. The ground staff are gathering around the boundary ropes again as the two Sri Lankan openers make their way to the crease. Lahiru Udara is joined by Kamil Mishara, who is on his Test debut, at a very nervous time. Dhruv Jurel is the stand-in wicket-keeper for India in place of Pant. Mohammed Siraj is ready to steam in with the new Kookaburra with a couple of slips and a gully in place. Udara is on strike. Here we go again...

Jurel, the standout - We had a long break in play, leaving Dhruv Jurel stranded on 95, and after the resumption, he got stuck on 99 for a while. However, he managed to notch up a sensational ton and mustered up a few quick runs after that as well. Asitha Fernando was the most prolific bowler for Sri Lanka, but he couldn't get a five-wicket haul as India declared and he will have to settle for a four-fer. The pitch still looks good for batting but it might help the spinners a bit more than expected. The next hour or so is very crucial for the hosts, and if they see it through without losing more than a wicket or two, then they will have a shot at challenging for the game. Let's get back to the action, as Sri Lanka's reply is set to resume. Also, over the horizon, things are once again starting to get darker, so let's see how much action we do get late on Day 2.

10.27 am GMT (4.57 pm IST) - As soon as the 500-run mark comes up, Shubman Gill signals the declaration from the stands. It seems like that was their target from the start, and they want to have a crack at the Lankan batters late in the day. Sri Lanka will have mixed feelings while walking off the field, because even though their toil has come to an end, they will now have to dig in with the bat and see off Day 2.

10.51 am GMT (4.21 pm IST) - The players are out in the middle. Sri Lanka's team is in a huddle, while Dhruv Jurel was spotted doing his knockabout practice. We are just a few minutes away from resumption. So do not go anywhere.

10.45 am GMT (4.15 pm IST) - Good news, folks! The patience has paid off. The stumps are being erected into the pitch now. And the word is that the play is set to resume at 10.55 am GMT (4.25 pm IST) and weather permitting, it will go till 12.30 pm GMT (6 pm IST) with an additional 30 minutes in reserve. A minimum of 77 overs will be bowled today. Also, the live visuals show that there are no clouds in sight and sunshine is back again. Let's hope that it stays like this throughout.

10.36 am GMT (4.06 pm IST) - The umpires have walked out for what looks like an inspection. Meanwhile, mopping work is in full swing at the SSC to clear the accumulated water. We will see what the inspection yields. Do stick around for more updates.

10.30 am GMT (4 pm IST) - The covers have begun to come off gradually, but another band of dark clouds is approaching and could bring more rain. Let's hope it blows away and it doesn't rain again. We are still a fair bit away from resumption. Just as we speak, we are hearing that all the covers have been peeled off from the pitch and the squares as well. Might be an inspection just around the corner. Stay tuned for more updates.

10.23 am GMT (3.53 pm IST) - There's a bit of good news now. The groundsmen have started clearing water off the covers, and the rain has stopped for the moment. And conditions have turned fairly bright as well now. Fingers crossed it holds and we see more positive updates ahead.

10 am GMT (3.30 pm IST) - Another heavy shower looks set to arrive as the sky turns dark once more and the radar flags more rain in the evening. And just as we speak, the drizzle has turned into a downpour now. With about two hours remaining in the day's play, it will still take the ground staff considerable time to dry the field. It may be too soon to call, but it feels like we are done for the day already.

9.40 am GMT (3.10 pm IST) - Scratch the previous update, folks. The rain has returned in Colombo and the covers are being brought back on the field. It’s not particularly heavy at the moment, but it's enough to bring the sheets back onto the field.

9.22 am GMT (2.52 pm IST) - Visuals from the ground suggest that a few of the covers are actually coming off. This means that the rain has stopped, but it will still take some time to clear the water as the rain was pretty heavy when it came down.

9.10 am GMT (2.40 pm IST) - Righto, the overhead conditions have just cleared up a bit, but the rain is still around. It does give us hope that whenever conditions dry up, we could be in for a rather quick resumption, as the groundstaff in Sri Lanka are probably the most efficient ones when it comes to tackling rain. For now, the wait continues, so stick around for more updates.

... DAY 2, SESSION 3 ...

8.50 am GMT (2.20 pm IST) - The rain has arrived, and it is pretty heavy as well, so it was a good decision to bring on the covers beforehand. With early Tea being taken, had the heavens not opened up, we would have had a restart in about 15 or so minutes, but it will certainly be a longer delay. Also, unlike Galle, when the rain falls in Colombo, it tends to stick around for a much longer while. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it boils over quickly. Stay tuned for further updates.

Ominous signs for the hosts - Sri Lanka might have been saved by the weather for now, but whenever they get the chance to bat, they will have a tough job at hand. Asitha Fernando has been the pick of the bowlers and the spinners have continued to toil. Keshara Nuwantha and Prabath Jayasuriya each got a wicket in the session gone by, but overall, the hosts haven't been able to put on consistent pressure on the batters.

India continue to dominate - The post-Lunch session started with India on 419/6, but they lost Rishabh Pant on the very first ball after the restart. Dhruv Jurel stayed resolute, and Manav Suthar gave him good company as the duo put on a 39-run stand. Since that wicket, Mohammed Siraj has come out and shown that he can dig in deep and keep fending away. Meanwhile, Jurel has moved into the 90s and is just 5 runs away from what would be a well-deserved ton.

DRINKS BREAK! We are just past the halfway mark in the second session, and the umpires call for a drinks break. Nearly 40 runs added in this session, and India were looking solid after losing Rishabh Pant on the very first ball after Lunch, but with that wicket of Manav Suthar, Sri Lanka will look to clean up the tail quickly. Dhruv Jurel is batting beautifully on 79, and he will look to take India past the 500-run mark and try to notch up a ton as well. Let's see how things pan out before Tea.

India primed for an afternoon acceleration - Pant and Jurel walk off the field with an unbeaten 112-run partnership that has put the visitors head and shoulders ahead of their opponents. With both batters well-set and looking to cut loose, India's immediate objective after the break will be to step on the accelerator and rapidly push the total past the 500-run mark. For Sri Lanka, the objective is straightforward: - keep taking wickets on a surface that’s beginning to show wear and tear - something they failed to do with conviction this morning. Or else, it will be yet another hard toil in the heat for them, having already bowled over a hundred overs. We will be back with the post-Lunch session at 7.10 am GMT (12.40 pm IST).

Grinding through to twin milestones - Following Saransh's departure, Rishabh Pant walked out to join Dhruv Jurel again after retiring late on Day 1, setting up a masterclass in resilience and counter-attack. Pant's innings did not resume smoothly, the Sri Lankan pacers greeted him with a consistent barrage of short-pitched deliveries, testing his resolve and reflexes on a responsive deck. The Indian keeper-batter showed immense grit, weathering the initial rough patch and grinding his way into a rhythm before shifting gears to bring up a splendid half-century. Jurel played a highly accomplished hand at the other end, matching his partner stroke for stroke to breach his own 50-run milestone, turning the early Lankan optimism into a long, leather-hunting session.

Early breakthrough for the hosts - Sri Lanka began Day 2 with a clear intent to exploit the relatively fresh second new ball, and seamer Asitha Fernando provided the perfect start by removing debutant Saransh Jain for just 6. Resuming from their overnight score of 300 for 5, India suffered this early jolt, which temporarily lifted the spirits of the Lankan camp. Asitha looked threatening, extracting decent bounce and testing the batters right from the outset. However, his opening burst proved to be the solitary celebration for the hosts in the morning session, as a lack of sustained support from the other end and an otherwise toothless display from the spinners failed to maintain any real pressure on the visitors.

Quick chat with the debutant - India's Saransh Jain is speaking with the broadcasters. (Translated from Hindi). Reflecting on how the debut news reached him, Saransh reveals he found out a day in advance from head coach Gautam Gambhir, which gave him time to prepare mentally. Reckons that a full day's play, just like yesterday, is on the cards as conditions will only get hotter and hotter. On the pitch, Russel opines that it is still a very good batting wicket and adds that India are in a strong position. Says there is not much that he can report in addition, but thinks the wear and tear will kick in as the game progresses. Comparing it to Galle, he notes the key difference lies in the bounce on offer here, considerably more of it, in and around four centimeters extra by his estimate. Details that, looking back at how the bowlers used the surface, lengths varied, but bowling on that good length proved most effective. Highlights that all four wickets so far have come from the fast bowlers using that slightly shorter length paired with the extra bounce. That, he explains, points to a pitch that is quickening up, meaning batting will only get harder as the wear sets in. His advice for Sri Lanka is that they need early wickets, because the longer they bowl, the less of this good batting surface will be left for them to cash in on themselves.

Update on Rishabh Pant - India's batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, confirmed during the press conference late last evening that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is expected to be fit to bat on Day 2. Within the space of just eight overs, India slid from a commanding 281/3 down to 296/5.

Padikkal's brilliance keeps India in front - Coming into the evening session, Lahiru Kumara went hard at the short ball ploy, looking to prise out mistakes from the batters. He ran in hard all evening on a thoroughly humid day and gave it everything he had. That tactic eventually paid off when Rishabh Pant took a nasty blow on his left wrist and had to retire hurt. It was not the smoothest passage of play for Jadeja either, though he farmed the strike carefully at his end, while Padikkal continued on serenely at the other end, who, unscathed, notched up his second Test hundred, milking easy boundaries through those stunning cuts and late cuts. The two formed another crucial 75-run stand, which tired out the Lankan bowlers who had already resorted to defensive bowling.

Fried in the heat - India dominated the afternoon session, played out on a pitch that kept getting flatter and easier to bat on as the sun beat down hard. Sri Lanka tried everything against Gill and Padikkal but created little, the pacers going short without reward, and the spinners retreating into negative lines outside leg rather too early in the piece. Both batters eased into their fifties before Asitha Fernando struck against the run of play, ending a 120-run stand for the only wicket of the session.

Balanced morning - A tug of war played out in near equal measure through the first session on a track that promised runs. India's openers set the tone nicely, with Jaiswal caressing the ball around the gaps with silky timing, and Rahul doing what Rahul does best. However, both departed eventually but not before laying a platform. Padikkal lived a charmed life early, reprieved twice on 0 and 1, before finding his rhythm alongside Shubman Gill, as the two weaved together a partnership that steadied India's ship. Sri Lanka, to their credit, refused to let the shackles loose, extracting swing, seam and the odd unpredictable bounce with still a bit of moisture around.

12.03 pm GMT (5.33 pm IST) - A good little phase for Sri Lanka toward the back end of the day, some reward at last after a long, hard toil in the heat. But overall, the Indians will be the happier of the two teams walking into the shed with exactly 300 runs on the board. They constantly maintained a run rate of over 3.5 through the day and find themselves in a very strong position on a really good batting pitch.

Gill x Padikkal, the tormenting stand - Sri Lanka did pick up a couple of wickets in the first session, thanks to their pacers but in the second session, the pitch had flattened out. Devdutt Padikkal looked good from the onset and after a watchful start, Shubman Gill also started to get going with ease. There was a short-ball burst from Fernando in the middle part of the session, but the Lankan spinners had to resort to some negative-line bowling given the lack of any grip from the surface. Gill and Padikkal both notched up half-centuries, but there was drama in the final over. Asitha Fernando sent Gill packing and nearly got Rishabh Pant on the very first ball as well. 9.11 am GMT (2.41 pm IST) - TEA, DAY 1 - A session dominated completely by India, and the Lankan bowlers have been made to toil hard in the field. As many as 99 runs were added in the session gone by, in just 27 overs, and not a single wicket fell, well until the very last over. Asitha Fernando has wrestled back just that tiny sliver of momentum for the hosts, and that might help them come out rejuvenated after the break.

Sri Lanka find their rhythm - Sri Lanka will be pleased with their bowling effort, with Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando far more consistent than in the first Test, regularly testing the batters and producing some fine deliveries. Fittingly, both picked up a wicket, though dropped chances off Padikkal at 0 and 1 left them wanting more. Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Nuwantha chipped in nicely too, but the pitch has offered little to the spinners so far. Sri Lanka will look to keep chipping away, while India will aim to build partnerships. The second session is scheduled for 7.10 am GMT (12.40 pm IST), though it could start a few minutes late after Lunch.

A promising start for India - India started cautiously, with the openers leaving well and playing close to the body. Yashasvi Jaiswal, though, was keen to keep the runs flowing, while KL Rahul was content to bide his time. Just as Rahul began to open up, he chased one outside off and edged it through to the keeper, ending a promising stay. Devdutt Padikkal joined Jaiswal and had a couple of nervy moments, but Jaiswal continued to attack and raced to a fluent 45 before falling short of a deserved fifty and almost got into an altercation with Asitha Fernando while walking off too. Shubman Gill and Padikkal then held firm to take India safely through to the end of the session.

6.32 am GMT (12.02 pm GMT) - LUNCH, DAY 1! A gripping opening session has left this 2nd Test finely poised, with India scoring briskly at just over three and a half an over, but Sri Lanka striking twice to remove both openers. The hosts could have made further inroads had they held on to their chances, but India have kept the scoreboard ticking. With the game hanging in the balance, the post-Lunch session could be pivotal, with the momentum up for grabs.

The captain of Sri Lanka - Dhananjaya de Silva concurs with his counterpart, agreeing that this surface is tougher than Galle's and should reward batters. Says that he does not mind bowling first, though, pointing to the cloud cover as a factor that could help his side strike early and apply pressure from the outset. On the changes in their XI, he confirms two, with Kamil Mishara set to make his debut and Pasindu Sooriyabandara also coming into the side. On being asked what Sri Lanka need to do better in this match, he keeps it simple - striking early with the ball, and with the bat, protecting wickets while ensuring the scoreboard keeps ticking over.

The captain of India - Shubman Gill mentions that his side will bat first on a hard surface that he expects to slow down as the match progresses, eventually aiding the bowlers on Day 4 and 5. Gill informs that debutant Saransh replaces Kuldeep Yadav, who unfortunately misses out due to an infection. On the previous game, Gill says that he would give his side a good 9 as they had a decent game throughout that Test. He reckons that achieving a perfect game is very difficult in Test cricket, noting that fluctuations and ups and downs are inevitable over the course of a five-day match.

PITCH REPORT - Sanjay Manjrekar is pitchside with his assessment. Sanjay Manjrekar expects a run-fest at the SSC. Scanning the strip this morning, he notes the same curator from Galle appears to have followed the same script, blanketing the entire pitch in grass. He adds that the only wrinkle this time is a touch more life in that covering, not quite a green top, but noticeably less dried out than what was on show last Test. The grass, he details, is there purely to bind the soil, not to signal a seamer's paradise. Even so, he explains, that hint of live grass means whoever wins the toss will almost certainly bat first, though the new ball bowlers might nick a little assistance in that opening hour, the old cliché holding true once again. What makes this surface genuinely fascinating, he adds, is the record book, with teams batting first having won 16 times here, and teams batting second have won 16 times too. Says it is a pitch where the toss barely tilts the scales, a rare thing he calls by wrapping it up.

Another beginning - Sri Lanka’s 25-year-old Kamil Mishara is also set to make his Test debut. Having already represented Sri Lanka in ODIs and T20Is, Mishara now begins a new chapter in his international career with his first Test appearance, becoming the 174th player to represent Sri Lanka in the longest format.

Test Cap 320 - The Indian team is in a huddle, with head coach Gautam Gambhir also present. SARANSH JAIN IS ALL SET TO MAKE HIS TEST DEBUT. Ravindra Jadeja hands him the cap as the others applaud it warmly. This is highly likely to mean Saransh will come into the playing XI in place of Kuldeep Yadav, who has not been seen taking part in the warm-up drills. A huge moment for the Madhya Pradesh all-rounder, who has earned his opportunity after years of hard work in domestic cricket.

A decent batting surface? Reckons Harsha Bhogle on air when he was asked about how the surface would play out. He says it is one of the best batting tracks in Sri Lanka. But also adds that there was some overnight rain and the pitch was under covers this morning so he mentions that there might be some moisture out there. However, he is quick to add that with the sun beating down right now, conditions will dry up considerably.

Aiming for ruthless perfection - India arrive in Colombo in high spirits, but there are vital areas they will look to fine-tune. Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill will be keen to show greater shot discipline against probing lines and lengths after missing out in Galle. The batting unit has plenty of depth with the in-form Devdutt Padikkal, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant firing. On the bowling front, young spinner Manav Suthar is flying high after his sensational 10-wicket match haul. India could also hand a Test debut to off-spinner Saransh Jain, replacing Kuldeep Yadav, who wasn't used much in the first Test, or wasn't effective enough to target Sri Lanka's left-hander-heavy lineup alongside Ravindra Jadeja and pacer Mohammed Siraj.

Lankan overhaul and tactical reboot - Sri Lanka enter this must-win clash with notable changes after paying heavily for top-order collapses in Galle. With veteran Dinesh Chandimal ruled out due to concussion and Nishan Madushka dropped, debutant Kamil Mishara will probably step up to open the innings. The home team will rely on Mishara to counter India's left-arm spin threat, while young Pasindu Sooriyabandara gets another opportunity to prove his mettle. To challenge the visitors, the Lankan batters must replicate the grit displayed by Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella, while Prabath Jayasuriya and Asitha Fernando will need to strike regularly and early in their spells with the ball.

Looking ahead - India were not quite at their best with the ball yesterday and would have learned their lessons. A good night’s rest for the bowlers, along with the weather factor, would have played a part in Shubman Gill’s decision on whether to enforce the follow-on. Making the new ball count will be crucial for the tourists, as once it loses its hardness, it does not seem to have quite the same bite and zip off the surface. Refusal to fold - Sri Lanka fought hard and came close to avoiding the follow-on, but fell short. On the bright side, it could have been a lot worse had it not been for the heroic effort from Sonal Dinusha, with valuable support from the bowlers. The last 3 wickets added 117 runs, and if not for that resistance, Sri Lanka could have been in an even deeper hole. Earlier, it was Pasindu Sooriyabandara who showed plenty of promise with the bat in just his second Test innings, having made a golden duck in the previous Test as a concussion substitute. The early signs are encouraging, with Sri Lanka seemingly having found a couple of gems.

Decision time for India - India can enforce the follow-on if they wish to. What will Shubman Gill decide? The Indian openers are not rushing off the park, which they would have had the follow-on not been enforced. Right, we have the confirmation - INDIA HAVE ENFORCED THE FOLLOW-ON.

In conversation with Mohammed Siraj - Siraj says the conditions in Sri Lanka are quite different from what they are used to in India, with the humidity making things challenging. On the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, he says that he enjoys taking on the added responsibility and sees it as a challenge rather than a burden. On the verbal exchanges with batters, Siraj feels that having a go at them can unsettle them and take them out of that comfort zone. Reflecting on his own performance, Siraj admits he has struggled to find his rhythm after a two-month break and says that he is working hard to get that rhythm back.

PITCH REPORT - Russel Arnold assesses the conditions ahead of the start of play on Day 4. Russel says that it is a cooler morning and the sun hasn't quite broken through. On the surface, he says, with every passing day, the bounce has gone down, but there's been no change in the pace of the pitch. Feels that a few cracks have started to open up, but no real demons in the pitch yet.

Weather watch - Rain has made an appearance towards the end of play on the previous two days so far, with Day 2 also seeing a spell of rain in the afternoon. Today has started on a different note, with cloudy skies overhead rather than the sunshine and blue skies we had yesterday. There are no ominous dark clouds around at the moment, though, so fingers crossed we get a full day of play.

In case you missed it - Prabath Jayasuriya has been reprimanded and handed one demerit point for striking the boundary cushions with his bat while walking off after his dismissal in the fading light on Day 2. This comes after a heated exchange between Asitha Fernando and Yashasvi Jaiswal on the opening day, with both players fined 25 per cent of their match fees for inappropriate physical contact and handed a demerit point.

A call to make - India's bowling coach Morne Morkel has not ruled out enforcing the follow-on if the opportunity presents itself, but Shubman Gill has not been particularly keen on taking that route since becoming Test captain. With the weather likely to play a part over the remaining two days, India may have to be brave with their decisions, especially with valuable WTC points up for grabs.

Time is of the essence - At 173/7, it could have all gone horribly wrong for Sri Lanka, but they have shown plenty of grit with the bat. The first task for Sonal Dinusha and Co. will be to add 39 more runs to take the follow-on out of India’s hands and, more importantly, eat up time.

A crucial Day 4 awaits - Still, India look set to come away with a significant lead, and with a good night’s rest and the second new ball, they will look to wrap things up quickly on Day 4. Lahiru Kumara did have a couple of moments when he ran out of patience, but got away with it. He will need to provide able support to Sonal Dinusha as the home side look to stretch the innings out and eat into the deficit. Two days remain in the Test, and whenever India get their turn to bat, they will have to plan their declaration with the weather in mind and work out how much time they need to take 10 Sri Lankan wickets. We did see the pitch showing signs of deterioration in the third session, and how it plays out remains to be seen. It will be another early start on Day 4 to make up for the time lost to rain, with the first ball scheduled for 4.15 am GMT (9.45 am IST). See you then. Cheers!

Sri Lanka keep India at bay - The story of the first couple of sessions was largely serene for Sri Lanka. Out of nowhere, India would pick up a wicket, but the hosts responded by putting together another partnership and continued to chip away at the deficit. 5 wickets fell across the two sessions, but Sri Lanka scored 208 runs in that period, with Pasindu Sooriyabandara leading the charge early on before Sonal Dinusha took over. At 173/7, India had their tails up with a double strike, and one might have feared the worst for the home side, but Dinusha fought on, with able support from the bowlers.

11.46 am GMT (5.16 pm IST) - STUMPS, DAY 3 - That's that for the day. With no signs of the weather improving, the umpires have pulled the plug on the day. That draws the curtains on another attritional day of Test cricket. Up against it at the start of the day, 495 runs adrift with 8 wickets in hand, Sri Lanka showed plenty of grit and resolve with the bat while also taking valuable time out of the game. India did not quite start well with the ball and leaked runs at 4.2 an over in the morning session. The second session brought some semblance of control, with three wickets falling in the afternoon, but they then ran into stiff resistance from Sonal Dinusha and the bowlers.

11.39 am GMT (5.09 pm IST) - Unfortunately, that drizzle is picking up pace now. And it looks like we are done for the day here. More and more covers are being dragged in to protect the playing area. The match officials are out, strolling across the covers with umbrellas open overhead, taking stock of the situation as the rain continues to fall.

11.34 am GMT (5.04 pm IST) - Alas! It was looking really gloomy, and now the drizzle has arrived. And it sends the ground staff sprinting in from every corner of the field. Covers in hand, it turns into a bit of a race among them to see who gets to the middle first. And just as we speak, almost the entire ground is under blue sheets with the pitch and squares protected right away. As of now, it isn't a heavy downpour just yet, more a soft sprinkle, but the sky overhead has taken on a look straight out of Gotham City.
