Spinners made their mark, eventually - There was enough in the conditions for the Lankan spinners from the opening day, but they could not make it count. The course correction came on Day 2, but the damage had already been done by then. Debutant Keshara Nuwantha made a strong impression after a relatively quiet first day in Test cricket, while Prabath Jayasuriya, after a quiet spell in recent times at Galle, picked up four wickets. Sri Lanka have their work cut out now as they set out in reply. Without the likes of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, it is an opportunity for the others to step up and make their mark against this Indian attack.

India finish with 462 - Having opted to bat first, India have managed to put up a formidable total on the board. Contributions came from across the batting order, with Devdutt Padikkal's 167 the headline act as he brought up his maiden Test hundred and made a strong case for himself at number 3. KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel also made scores of note.

Asitha Fernando to Prasidh Krishna, OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Asitha wraps it up with two wickets to his name and INDIA HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 462! He keeps slamming the deck hard, short and outside the leg stump. Krishna gets inside the line to try to play the pull shot but only manages to glove it behind to the keeper. Niroshan Dickwella takes a regulation catch. A polite appeal is all that is required for the umpire to raise his finger. It took the Lankans just four balls to get the job done.

We are all set for the action to commence. The skies are still clear overhead, although the sun has hidden behind the clouds. A stiff breeze is blowing across the ground. Prasidh Krishna will face the first ball of the day. Asitha Fernando will kick things off with the ball. The field is set for the short ball as Fernando will steam in from around the wicket. No declaration from India. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar had a look at the wicket earlier and shared his thoughts. He feels the wicket still looks good, with no obvious wear and tear on the surface. There are, however, a couple of rough patches that could come into play as the Test progresses. Manjrekar has his theory behind India's decision not to declare overnight. With India batting, they had the option of using the roller, but they chose not to.

Early start, weather permitting - We are in for an early start today to make up for the time lost to rain, with the first ball scheduled for 4.15 am GMT (9.45 am IST). That was the plan yesterday as well, but the rain meant we had to wait nearly five hours before seeing any action. It has been a sunny start to the morning, and let's hope it stays that way so we can get a prompt start.

Sri Lanka raise their game - The hosts were much better with the ball on Day 2 after an inconsistent showing on the opening day, and the improvement in their lines and lengths brought rewards when the second new ball was taken. Their next challenge is with the bat, and that could be just around the corner. An overnight declaration from India cannot be ruled out, which would allow them to unleash their pacers in the morning conditions.

India hold the cards - Both these sides are in that territory in the WTC race where neither can afford a draw in the series and both need to go for the win. Two days into the Test, India are better placed to do so, and the intrigue now lies in how they go about achieving it.

Welcome, one and all - We are back for Day 3 action in the first Test at Galle. Both days so far have been affected by rain, particularly yesterday when only 43 overs were possible. The forecast suggests rain could continue to play a part over the remaining three days, but we begin today hoping for better fortunes and as much uninterrupted cricket as possible.

A chat with the centurion - Devdutt Padikkal says he had dreamt of this moment and has spent the last two years working hard to ensure that whenever an opportunity came his way, he could do something special. On playing spin, he believes that you need to have certain plans in your head, as you cannot always react to what the bowler delivers. Over the last year or so, he has worked on ways to put the pressure back on the bowlers with his shots. Padikkal says having clarity in his plans helps with his confidence and footwork. He is focused on committing fully to whatever he decides to do. Mentions that the hunger to score more runs remains, as he enjoys batting. Adds that the next 10 balls after reaching a hundred are particularly important to him, as he looks to stay focused. When asked if the pitch had started to grip a lot more on Day 2, Padikkal says not so much, and he feels it will need another couple of sessions before the surface starts breaking up. Believes pitches at Galle tend to quicken up pretty fast on Days 3 and 4 and hopes that is the case. When asked if there are any celebrations in order for the milestone, Padikkal smiles and says that he is tired and will go to bed.

The hosts find wickets late - India kept the runs flowing in the final session, but Sri Lanka refused to let them get away, striking at regular intervals. Prabath Jayasuriya removed Jadeja cheaply, but Jurel countered with a fine fifty, adding 55 alongside Manav Suthar. He had a life on 29 when the Lankan skipper put him down, while Lahiru Kumara briefly eased the pressure by conceding 29 in three overs, only for Dhananjaya de Silva to make amends with a stunning first-slip catch to remove him later. Siraj was promoted to swing hard but managed just one six, while Manav Suthar showed promise in his 24 before falling while trying to accelerate. Jayasuriya claimed a four-fer, and with India finishing on 460/9, one would think that they might not come out to bat and let their bowlers use the early morning conditions to make inroads, that is, if rain permits.

India add runs, Lanka fight back - After a frustrating morning lost entirely to rain and a wet outfield, play finally got underway nearly five hours after the scheduled start. India resumed on 288/2 and continued to pile on the runs, but Sri Lanka came back strongly with the second new ball. Pant and Rahul fell in quick succession to the impressive debutant Keshara Nuwantha, before Devdutt Padikkal carried on to a magnificent 167, only to be undone by a beauty from Prabath Jayasuriya. India still added 76 runs in the session to reach 364/5 at Tea.

12.35 pm GMT - (6.05 pm IST) - STUMPS, DAY 2! Despite getting only 43 overs of play with rain once again dominating the day, there was plenty of action, with India adding 172 runs while Sri Lanka picked up 7 wickets. The hosts’ overnight plans clearly paid off as they bowled with greater consistency, particularly their spinners, and made India work hard for their runs. It was a much better contest between the sides, though Sri Lanka will surely wonder where this performance was on the opening day, because a similar effort then could have made this a far tighter battle heading into Moving Day.

The angle seems to be taking it down leg, but Sri Lanka want to take a chance. No bat involved but as expected, the Ball Tracking has the ball missing the leg stump by a fair bit.

Is that out? Sri Lanka have taken a review for LBW, not given on the field. Ball Tracking shows it is missing the leg stump.

Asitha Fernando to Prasidh Krishna, Dug in short, over off. Krishna hops and gets his hands high to fend it down. An outside edge is found but it goes through the vacant slip cordon. Prasidh sets off for the run but Kuldeep refuses the single.

After being on the shorter side for most of the over, he slips in a full ball from around the wicket. Siraj hangs deep in the crease and backs away, exposing all three stumps. He looks to launch it over mid off but gets it right off the toe end of the blade. It is spooned to mid off, where Dhananjaya de Silva moves to his left and slides to complete the catch. India are now 447/8.

Sri Lanka put up a fight - One might have expected India to attack after so much time was lost, but they were measured while still punishing the loose deliveries. The second new ball changed things, with Rishabh Pant trying to shift gears before becoming Keshara Nuwantha’s first Test wicket, followed soon by Rahul, who could not make much impact after coming out to bat for the second time. Dhruv Jurel brought positive intent, while Devdutt Padikkal continued in his own style, reaching a fine 150 before Prabath Jayasuriya produced a beauty to remove him for 167, just 10 minutes before Tea. Jurel and Jadeja saw India through, but the Lankan spinners are finding their rhythm, while Asitha Fernando has bowled some absolute jaffas without much reward, giving Sri Lanka plenty to build on heading into the final session. 10.30 am GMT (4 pm IST) - TEA, DAY 2 - After a frustrating wait of nearly five hours from the scheduled start, with the rain playing hide and seek, Day 2 finally got underway. India picked up right where they left off, steadily strengthening their position with 76 runs coming in 21 overs at just under four an over. Sri Lanka, though, refused to let the visitors run away with it, striking three times with the second new ball to inject some much-needed life into the contest. India still had the better of the overall picture, but Sri Lanka certainly had their moments in a hard-fought session.

8.42 am GMT (2.12 pm IST) - The first ball is not far away, but to dampen our spirits, clouds have rolled in. The rain has returned, and so have the ground staff with the covers. It has been that kind of day, and the rain gods seem determined to keep us waiting.

8.33 am GMT (2.03 pm IST) - Right, we have a start time. Play on Day 2 will commence at 8.45 am GMT (2.15 pm IST). Tea break will be taken at 10.30 am GMT (4 pm IST). Great work by the ground staff, who made the most of the window without rain to get the ground ready for play. The Indians are in a huddle, with head coach Gautam Gambhir having a word with his troops. Let's hope we have seen the last of the rain and can enjoy uninterrupted action from here.

8.22 am GMT (1.52 pm IST) - Now this is the kind of update everyone was waiting for! The sun is out, most of the covers have been removed, and the players have started warming up. The stumps have also been put in place, while the crease markings are being refreshed - another very encouraging sign that we could be edging closer to action getting underway.

8.16 am GMT (1.46 pm IST) - We are still awaiting the official word from the inspection, but the positive news is that the rain continues to stay away. That gives the ground staff a valuable window to continue working on the outfield, with everyone now waiting for the umpires to assess the conditions and provide the next update.

7.36 am GMT (1.06 pm IST) - The ground staff are back at work, with the skies looking much brighter now. Hoping for the weather to cooperate this time, because every time the mop-up gets underway, the ground staff have had to put the covers back on with the return of rain or the threat of it. An inspection will take place at 8.10 am GMT (1.40 pm IST).

7.24 am GMT (12.54 pm IST) - The unpredictable Galle weather shows its colours once again. The clouds have rolled in, and we are back to square one with the clean-up work put on hold.

7.18 am GMT (12.48 pm IST) - The rain has stopped, and promisingly, blue skies have appeared overhead. The ground staff will now once again go through the painstaking process of peeling the covers off one by one and ensuring none of the water collected on them spills onto the playing surface. Let's hope the weather holds up this time and the ground staff are able to complete the mop-up.

7 am GMT (12.30 pm IST) - The rain has arrived, and it is coming down quite heavily. It has been a frustrating day for everyone involved, and a word of appreciation for the ground staff. With the rain on and off, they have had to bring the covers on and off repeatedly, which is no easy task, especially with the heavy covers soaked in water.

6.49 am GMT (12.19 pm IST) - The umpires are out for an inspection, having a chat with one of the members of the ground staff. It is still a bit overcast, and the umpires are keeping an eye on the part of the ground where the weather is approaching. The covers have been put back on, with rain seemingly on the way.

6.15 am GMT (11.45 am IST) - The rain has subsided, and the skies have brightened up. The second session is scheduled to commence at 6.50 am GMT (12.20 pm IST), but given the amount of rain we have had this morning, a prompt start looks a stretch even if the weather holds up. Let's hope for the best.

6.04 am GMT (11.34 am IST) - It's been that kind of day. Just as the ground staff were beginning to remove the covers, the heavens opened up. We have news coming in that early Lunch will be taken at 6.10 am GMT (11.40 am IST).

5.44 am GMT (11.14 am IST) - Oh, no. The covers are coming back on. It is not raining just yet, but the ground staff reckon a shower could be just around the corner. We saw something similar yesterday during the Lunch break, when the covers went on as a precaution, and the rain soon followed. Stick around for more news.

In conversation with Ravindra Jadeja - Sanjay Manjrekar has caught up with the Indian all-rounder. Jadeja says, as a spinner, he always looks forward to dry wickets with a few cracks, as they tend to offer more turn and bounce. He feels this pitch is on the drier side, with some deliveries turning while others have kept straight. He expects the turn and bounce to increase as the game progresses, giving the spinners plenty to enjoy. Jadeja recalls playing on rank turners in India and admits that such surfaces excite him as a spinner. He jokingly adds that he does not always prefer rank turners because he wants to score runs too. Ravindra says he always knew he had the ability with the bat, having generally batted at number 4 in domestic cricket, but found himself pushed down the order during his early days for India. Mentions that batting at number 6 helped him find his mojo. He feels his success with the bat in England came from limiting his shots and keeping things simple, something he also worked on mentally.

History made in Darwin - Bangladesh have secured their first-ever Test win in Australia, on their return to the country for Test cricket for the first time since 2003. The number 1-ranked Test side have been beaten at home by a team ranked 9th in the world. A result few would have seen coming, and one that will go down as one of the biggest upsets in Test cricket. One can only imagine the celebrations that will take place across Bangladesh as fans celebrate a historic victory that will be remembered for years to come.

4.58 am GMT (10.28 am IST) - The visuals show plenty of movement around the ground, with a number of ground staff members coming onto the field and getting to work. They are removing the tyres that were being used to weigh down the covers before starting to peel the covers off. And with Galle known for having one of the best ground staff teams around, they will be hoping to make the most of every minute and get the ground ready as quickly as possible.

4.45 am GMT (10.15 am IST) - The rain has finally stopped, but there is still a lot of water collected over the covers. With so much to clear, the ground staff will need a considerable amount of time to get everything under control, and it could take more than an hour before they are able to properly assess the playing conditions.

4.19 am GMT (9.49 am IST) - Well, well, the unpredictability of Galle weather strikes again, this time in a good way. It has stopped raining. The entire ground was covered, so it will take a fair bit of time before we can get the action underway. Scratch that. The rain has returned, so the wait continues.

4.09 am GMT (9.39 am IST) - It continues to rain, and the start of play has been delayed. The forecast is for a stop-start kind of day, which will be frustrating for everyone involved, but it is what it is. The forecast looks similar for the days to come as well. All we can hope for is enough clear weather for either side to force a result, with India currently better placed to do so. Looks like it is going to be a long day, so settle in, grab a coffee and stick around with us.

3.45 am GMT (9.15 am IST) - We are 30 minutes away from the scheduled early start, and it is currently raining heavily in Galle. The entire ground has been covered, and it looks increasingly likely that we will have a delayed start. As we wait for the weather to improve in Galle, you can hop over to Darwin, where, riding on a ton from Cameron Green, Australia have pushed their lead to 50. And just as we type, Green has dragged one back onto the stumps, leaving Australia 9 down.

How's the weather looking? Galle witnessed a spell of heavy rain earlier this morning, and the covers were taken off after the rain subsided. They have since been put back on, though, with the ground staff expecting another shower. Reminder that play is scheduled to start 15 minutes early today to make up for the time lost yesterday due to rain, with the first ball at 4.15 am GMT (9.45 am IST). Let's hope the weather clears up in time and we get a prompt start to the day.

Bat once and bat big - That will be the aim for India. First-innings scores have been on the higher side at Galle of late, and it seems to be panning out that way here as well. The second new ball is just 7 overs away, and that will be a window Sri Lanka will need to make count if they are to limit India's total. More than anything, though, they will need to be far more disciplined with the ball than they were on Day 1.

Looking back at Day 1 - India's 600th Test began on the country's 80th Independence Day, and they marked the occasion with a dominant effort. Having won the toss, which is looking increasingly crucial given the conditions, India barely put a foot wrong yesterday, led by Devdutt Padikkal's maiden Test ton. The ball turned from the first session and the amount of turn increased as the day went on, but Sri Lanka's inconsistency in hitting the right areas meant they could not make the most of it.

A century to remember - India had a few twists to deal with in the final session, with KL Rahul forced to retire hurt on 77 after cramping up before facing a ball and Shubman Gill departing after a fluent 16, falling to Prabath Jayasuriya. Padikkal, though, kept his composure through a couple of nervy moments on 98 and 99 to complete a memorable maiden Test hundred. With the ball beginning to turn more, debutant Keshara Nuwantha showed enough to keep things interesting, but Pant was in no mood to sit back, taking the attack on alongside the centurion. The pair added 52 before bad light brought an end to play, leaving India in a commanding position and Sri Lanka still searching for that elusive breakthrough.

Padikkal and Rahul tighten the screws - The second session was every bit as productive for India, although rain ensured it did not begin until more than an hour later. Once play resumed, KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal picked up where they had left off, showing tremendous composure even as the surface began offering a hint of turn. Both batters brought up well-deserved fifties, with Padikkal particularly fluent, and the partnership continued to grow to 150. Sri Lanka simply could not find the breakthrough they needed, with a few edges also failing to carry to the fielders, as India marched to 197/1 by Tea and firmly seized control of the opening day.

The openers lay the foundation - India made an emphatic start to their historic 600th Test, taking the opening session firmly by the scruff of the neck. After choosing to bat, the visitors raced along with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul looking comfortable, before an unfortunate run out ended Jaiswal’s stay for 32. That barely slowed India down, though, as Devdutt Padikkal joined Rahul and the pair settled in beautifully. Sri Lanka struggled to find the consistency needed to create pressure, and India went into lunch at 101/1, with Rahul and Padikkal unbeaten on 32 and 35 respectively.

India dominate opening day - India enjoyed a hugely encouraging opening day in Galle, gradually taking a firm grip on the contest and leaving Sri Lanka with plenty of questions to answer. Despite the rain interruptions and a few moments when the surface offered something to the bowlers, the visitors remained composed and kept the scoreboard moving throughout. Sri Lanka struggled to build any sustained pressure, while India’s batting depth and control ensured they finished the day in an imposing position at 288/2. With plenty of time still left in the Test, the hosts already have a mountain to climb.

Sri Lanka searching for a way back - Sri Lanka have not been consistent enough with their lines and lengths to trouble the batters, with Prabath Jayasuriya looking the most likely to provide a breakthrough. However, luck has not been on his side, with a few edges falling just short of the fielders. The hosts now need to find a way to pick up wickets without giving away easy runs, with the Men in Blue firmly on course for a massive score. India's domination continues - India had already laid the platform in the first session, but with the ball starting to turn and the rain finally staying away, KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal had to bring their focus back. They did exactly that, making batting look rather comfortable despite a couple of half-chances along the way. Both batters brought up excellent fifties, with Padikkal reaching his much quicker than his partner, as the duo extended their stand to 150 and counting. Rahul did struggle with cramps towards the end of the session and looked a little uneasy, but he battled through.

10.20 am GMT (3.50 pm IST) - TEA, DAY 1! A session completely dominated by India, who went through the entire period without losing a wicket. KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal looked solid at the crease, adding 96 runs in 26 overs in a session that started more than an hour late due to rain, leaving Sri Lanka with little to cheer about. The hosts now face an uphill task but will hope to make some inroads in the final session and claw their way back into the contest.

8.14 am GMT (1.44 pm IST) - The umpires are done with the inspection. Going by Rod Tucker's gestures to one of the two camps, it looks like we could be looking at a 2 pm local time start, but we await official confirmation. The official word is now in, and play will resume at 8.30 am GMT (2 pm IST). The second session will continue until 10.20 am GMT (3.50 pm IST). The third session will get underway at 10.40 am GMT (4.10 pm IST) and go on until 12.30 pm GMT (6 pm IST).

8.06 am GMT (1.36 pm IST) - The inspection is underway. The two umpires are taking a stroll around the park to assess the outfield and check the conditions. They do not seem entirely satisfied just yet and are giving instructions to one of the ground staff members. Devdutt Padikkal and KL Rahul can be seen waiting on the balcony, awaiting the umpires' decision.

7.56 am GMT (1.26 pm IST) - We have news coming in. The umpires have decided to conduct an inspection at 8.05 am GMT (1.35 pm IST) to assess the conditions and determine whether we are ready for a resumption.

7.48 am GMT (1.18 pm IST) - As we mentioned earlier, given the sheer number of covers used to cover the entire ground, removing them all carefully and ensuring no water spills onto the playing surface is quite a task. The ground staff are working their way through it, but some of the covers are still to be removed. Stay tuned for more news.

7.26 am GMT (12.56 pm IST) - The sun has made an appearance, and the stumps have been erected. The ground staff continue with the work of peeling the covers off, and we should be resuming shortly. Stick around!

7.13 am GMT (12.43 pm IST) - The rain has subsided, and the ground staff have sprung into action. They are clearing the water from the covers before peeling them off, ensuring none of it spills onto the playing surface. It has brightened up as well, but the weather can be unpredictable in this part of the world, so fingers crossed it stays this way. Moments later, the covers are being removed, and it is all building up promisingly towards a resumption.

7.09 am GMT (12.39 pm IST) - It is still raining, and the start of the second session has been delayed. The day started under bright blue skies, with the sun out in all its glory, but over the course of the first session, the clouds gathered as if they had been waiting for the session to finish before making an appearance. The good thing is that the entire ground gets covered in this part of the world, and the ground staff are pretty efficient with their work. Looking ahead - Unfortunately, it has started to rain, and it has gone quite dark. After all the talk about this being different from the usual Galle wicket, while it may not be a rank turner, it is certainly not a flat batting surface either. Whether it settles down as the ball loses its hardness is a different story. India have a solid platform to build on in the sessions to come, while Sri Lanka have their work cut out and will need to be patient. The second session is scheduled to commence at 7.10 am GMT (12.40 pm IST), so let's hope the rain clears up by then. Session recap - India knew the opening phase against the quicks was going to be a challenge. They navigated the initial burst well and nearly made it through the first hour unscathed before Jaiswal was run out. Sri Lanka's quicks, though, did not quite attack the stumps enough and could not make the most of whatever little help was on offer. KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal were decisive with their footwork in tackling the spin, with Padikkal in particular being positive against the spinners. More of the same will be required, as they can expect a healthy dose of spin.

6.31 am GMT (12.01 pm IST) - LUNCH ON DAY 1 - The covers are being brought on, which looks more like a precautionary measure as clouds gather in the distance. In conversation with Kuldeep Yadav - Kuldeep says it is a massive honour to be part of India's 600th Test, especially on Independence Day. He says it has been a long journey and he is very happy to be part of the landmark occasion. Feels the team benefited from coming to Sri Lanka early and having 10 days of preparation. A few players are travelling to Sri Lanka for the first time, but Kuldeep feels they have played enough cricket to adapt quickly. He also mentions having discussions about how the Kookaburra ball behaves compared to the SG ball back home. On the pitch, Kuldeep says the last couple of games in Galle have produced good batting wickets, with the first innings generally being high-scoring. However, it will depend on the surface they get this time, while the wind factor can play a huge role.

The captain of India - Shubman Gill says that it looks like a good wicket and the weather looks nice as well. Says that they have two fast bowlers and three spinners. Gill mentions that it is always an honour to lead his country, and this being the 600th Test match and on Independence Day makes it a bit more special.

TOSS - Time for the coin to go up in Galle. Dhananjaya de Silva and Shubman Gill exchange pleasantries in the middle. 'Heads' is the call from Shubman, and he gets it right. India will BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar is near the deck. Sanjay mentions that the pitch looks good for batting. Shares that there is an even covering of grass and he does not expect it to be a rank turner. He feels there is some moisture in the surface, so batters will have to be watchful for the first 30-40 minutes, with the seamers expected to get some lateral movement. Sanjay's advice is to bat first and put a big total on the board, as batting in the fourth innings is always a challenge here in Galle, with the average score being around 120-130.

Out to answer questions - On India's 80th Independence Day, their men's team will feature in their 600th Test, thus becoming the third team after England and Australia to reach that landmark. India have not lost a series in Sri Lanka since 2010 and have won their last five Tests in the island nation. But a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. Once considered a side that played spin particularly well, home debacles against New Zealand and South Africa have raised questions, and it is an opportunity for India to show whether they have learned their lessons and improved as a side.

Islanders look to break the drought - Since Dimuth Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews retired last year, there has been an injection of new blood into the Test team for the island nation. Adding to their challenge, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis are missing the first Test through injuries. That presents an opportunity for others to step up and make their mark. Sri Lanka have not won a Test against India since 2015, while their last Test series win over India came all the way back in 2008. But they will know about India's frailties against spin and will look to exploit that weakness in this series.

India and Sri Lanka renew rivalry - Hello, one and all. Test cricket takes centre stage this August, with Australia and Bangladesh already locking horns in a contest that is bubbling up nicely. Sri Lanka have a blueprint - With India needing to declare at some point, they will know the Indian batters will be looking for runs, and in doing so, avenues could open up for them to make inroads. One also feels they would have learned their lesson from the first innings and will bowl with far greater discipline than they did on the opening day.

India weigh up the declaration - The question for India is how many more they want to add, but the bigger question is how much time they feel they need to take 10 Sri Lankan wickets. One gets the feeling they will want to reach the point where the second new ball becomes available on Day 5. We saw yesterday that once the ball lost its hardness, the bite and zip off the surface disappeared, so the visitors will want to have a crack with the new ball at some point today and, if needed, again tomorrow.

Welcome back for Day 4 - After three days of action, we have a Test that is fascinatingly poised, with India holding the advantage but Sri Lanka having shown enough fight to keep themselves in the contest. India lead by 178 runs with two days to go in this game, but no one quite knows how much cricket we are going to get. Day 2 saw only 43 overs, while Days 1 and 3 produced considerably more action. Here's hoping the rain stays away and allows this Test to build towards the finish it deserves.

Big Day 4 coming up - Indeed. And the Indians will also feel a touch relieved to have escaped coming out to bat in that tricky period towards the end of the day. They will come out fresh on Day 4, with an aim to just drag the game away from Sri Lanka's reach. The hosts, on the other hand, showed a good fight with the ball through the second day, and will look to repeat that dose with even more conviction, hoping to restrict India as cheaply as possible from here. However, with the weather forecast pointing to rain over the last two days, time itself could end up being the biggest variable in how this Test finally unfolds. So that's that from today. India hold the aces. Sri Lanka are on the back foot. Day 4 begins on Tuesday, 18th August, with the first ball scheduled to be bowled at 4.15 am GMT (9.45 am IST), as it will be another early start. Cheers!

Spinners laid the trap - Let us take a peek at what happened on this Moving Day. Four balls were all Sri Lanka needed to wrap up India's marathon 462, but the hosts barely got to enjoy it before Siraj struck early and Manav Suthar weaved magic on the first ball to remove Chandimal. A few brisk partnerships offered brief resistance, but India's spin trio kept the squeeze on throughout, sending Sri Lanka sliding from 27/1 to 59/4 before Jadeja struck again just before lunch to round off a dominant morning for India. But the response from Sri Lanka was solid as they went wicketless in the afternoon session, on the back of a massive recovery partnership between Dickwella and Dinusha, with the former being dropped on 20 by KL Rahul. With the ball getting softer and older, batting turned a touch more breathable, and Dickwella and Dinusha made full use of it, sweeping their way through to keep any hint of a slide at bay before the Indians barged back in style.

11.36 am GMT (5.06 pm IST) - STUMPS ON DAY 3 - That will be that for the day, as the umpires have decided that no further play is possible with the weather around. It feels like the clouds got together and decided this was the moment to let it all out. Overall, it was yet another day that belonged firmly to India, who carry a healthy 178-run lead into what's left of this Test after the first innings. Sri Lanka did test the tourists, especially through the afternoon session, but it simply wasn't enough to shake walls that had been built brick by brick.

Rain threat in Galle - India will have to negotiate 13 overs today, weather permitting, as dark clouds are lurking ominously. It isn't raining just yet, but as a precaution, the ground staff have rolled the covers over the pitch and squares, sensing perhaps that a shower might be on its way. But just as we speak, it looks like it has started to drizzle in Galle.

Impressive fightback - Despite their top order being blown away to 90 for 5, Sri Lanka found a solid counterpunch through the pairing of Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella who parked themselves at the crease in an alliance of 146 runs. They were still behind the eight ball, but their effort helped the home side to avoid the follow-on. Though Dickwella failed to convert yet another fifty into his maiden Test hundred, Dinusha went the extra mile and notched up his first hundred in the longest format, displaying enormous character. And with some valuable runs from the lower order, Sri Lanka did manage to shrink their deficit to 178 runs, but they just ran out of steam once Dinusha was fished out.

11.27 am GMT (4.57 pm IST) - India continue to hold the upper hand throughout this Test, with the Lankan fightback notwithstanding. And with a mammoth 462 on the board, they were always going to be a mile ahead of the hosts regardless. Excellent outing for the likes of Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja, who shared seven wickets between them, with the latter getting to his 350th Test wicket en route.

Looking ahead - The unbeaten 125-run stand has brought the deficit down to 247 runs, with 48 more needed to avoid the follow-on. Even if the home side do not manage to get those 48 runs, though, it looks likely that India will bat again, but that is for later. First, Shubman Gill and his men will have to see past this pair and then hope to run through the tail. Defiant duo frustrate India - Sri Lanka had their backs to the wall coming into the second session, but Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella showed tremendous application to keep India's spin trio at bay. Dickwella was particularly productive behind the wicket with his sweeps and also had a bit of luck on his side, being dropped on 20 by KL Rahul. India started with spin in tandem before later switching to pace from both ends, with Mohammed Siraj, as he often does, putting in a lion-hearted effort. Whatever was thrown at them, though, the left-handed duo navigated the challenge well.
