Commentary
Right then, a wet Saturday has dampened our spirits, but here’s hoping for better fortunes on Sunday, 18th May. It marks the first of the two remaining double-header days in the 2025 Indian Premier League. The first game of the day will see the Rajasthan Royals taking on the Punjab Kings in Jaipur at 3.30 pm IST (10 am GMT). A win for the Kings will bring them closer to the playoffs, while the Royals are already out of contention. This will be followed by the Delhi Capitals squaring off against the Gujarat Titans in Delhi at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). A victory for the Titans will secure their spot in the playoffs, while the Capitals are desperate to get back to winning ways. As always, our build-up for both games will begin well in advance. Until then, take care and see you soon. Cheers!
As for the Kolkata Knight Riders, their slim hopes of qualification are now officially over. Coming into this game, the defending champions needed to win both of their remaining matches to stay in contention. But with just one game left and a maximum possible tally of 14 points, KKR have been eliminated from the playoff race.
What does this washout mean for both teams? With a point from this abandoned clash, Royal Challengers Bengaluru move to the top of the table with 17 points. A win tonight would have sealed their playoff berth, but now they will have to wait a little longer to get that all-important ‘Q’ next to their name. It was a special occasion, with fans turning up in white jerseys to pay tribute to Virat Kohli following his Test retirement. Despite the rain, they made their presence felt, though unfortunately, they couldn’t witness any action on the field.
Alas! The news many feared, though still hoped to avoid, has arrived. The game has officially been CALLED OFF due to rain. A real bummer for everyone involved, especially with all the excitement around the much-anticipated resumption of the competition after the break. The forecast had warned of heavy rain, and unfortunately, it proved accurate. There was a brief moment of hope when the rain paused and the ground staff began mop-up operations, but sadly, the rain returned and never relented.
UPDATE - 10.23 pm IST (4.53 pm GMT) - Live visuals show the match officials walking out and they have their umbrellas in hand, which means it is still raining. A decision on the game could be imminent, so we might hear an official update very soon.
UPDATE - 9.59 pm IST (4.29 pm GMT) - The clock continues to tick and the rain refuses to relent. It’s a race against time with less than an hour left for the rain to stop, the ground staff to prepare the outfield, and a shortened game to get underway before the cut-off time. Also, the toss needs to happen by 10.40 pm IST (5.10 pm GMT) or sooner.
UPDATE - 9.26 pm IST (3.56 pm GMT) - Not much has changed since the last update, as the rain gods continue to show no mercy. In case of a washout, KKR will be officially knocked out of the playoff race, while RCB will move to the top of the points table with 17 points, though their playoff spot still won’t be guaranteed just yet. Remember, we still have 90 minutes to squeeze in a 5-over contest with the cut-off time being 10.56 pm IST (5.26 pm GMT).
UPDATE - 8.55 pm IST (3.25 pm GMT) - It continues to rain steadily, and we are now into the territory where overs will start being lost. So, if and when the game begins, it will be a shortened one. That said, the superb drainage system at the Chinnaswamy is keeping everyone optimistic about some action tonight. All we need now is a break in the weather and this time, one that lasts long enough.
UPDATE - 8.36 pm IST (3.06 pm GMT) - Oopsie! The rain is back, and the mop-up operations will have to be paused as the ground staff and match officials retreat to their sheds. It’s coming down quite hard now, and the waiting game continues at the Chinnaswamy.
UPDATE - 8.28 pm IST (2.58 pm GMT) - Good news! The rain has subsided, and there’s some movement out in the middle. The ground staff are getting into action, and the fourth umpire is also out inspecting conditions. The Super Soppers are already at work, though there's still some water pooled on the covers. Let's hope that the rain holds up now!
Andre Russell is in for a flash interview. He says it’s a good feeling to be part of this amazing tournament. He mentions it’s been a quick turnaround from last week and he is excited to play the game today. He feels there was a break in momentum, but being professionals, they are used to such things and they are also used to going from one country to another. He feels he knows how to switch on and off mentally. He says switching off helps him as an individual to reflect and take a bit of a break. He shares that the moment he came to practice two days ago, he started hitting and made sure his body is up and running. He says it’s a lot to do with mindset, and his mindset is strong. States that last week did break some momentum, but yesterday in practice, he did hit the ball pretty well, and he sent two balls on the roof of the stadium. Mentions that he has been following up with the weather. Adds that they are prepared to play in any situation, even if it’s a wet outfield, as he feels they need those two points badly. He says it doesn’t matter if there’s an ocean out there, as they will still be ready to take the field.
UPDATE - 8.11 pm IST (2.41 pm GMT) - The fans continue to wait patiently as the rain persists. On most RCB home nights, it's a sea of red in the stands, but tonight, amidst the red, are plenty of fans donning white jerseys as a heartfelt tribute to Virat Kohli following his Test retirement.
UPDATE - 7.36 pm IST (2.06 pm GMT) - Uh, oh! The rain has picked up in intensity. Harsha Bhogle informs on air that we will start losing overs from 8.45 pm IST (3.15 pm GMT). He also mentions that the cut-off time for a 5-over contest is 10.56 pm IST (5.26 pm GMT). So, while the weather isn’t helping at the moment, there’s still plenty of time left to get a game in. Hang in there!
UPDATE - 7.26 pm IST (1.56 pm GMT) - It’s still raining in Bengaluru, but there’s some good news. First, the intensity of the rain has reduced, and second, Harsha Bhogle reports on air that the puddles which had begun to form have now disappeared, thanks to the venue’s excellent drainage system. Let’s hope the rain eases off soon so the ground staff and drainage system can work their magic.
Phil Salt of RCB, ahead of a crucial game, is up for a quick chat. He expresses excitement about being back on the field after a bit of a break. Mentions that he is feeling fully fit and is eager to contribute. States that he has emphasised his focus on batting fundamentals, staying aligned and playing straight, while also maintaining his power-hitting through consistent training. Speaking about the satisfaction of cleanly striking the ball, he reflects on the discipline and preparation that led to those rewarding moments. Further adds that as the team eyes the playoffs, he describes the incredible atmosphere around the Chinnaswamy Stadium, calling the fan support unbelievable and noting how it fuels their mindset. Looking ahead, he highlights the importance of winning the remaining league-stage matches to become the table topper. On Virat Kohli’s Test retirement, Salt shares that it hasn’t been a topic of discussion in the dressing room, adding that the team and Kohli himself, remain fully focused on the tournament’s immediate goals.
UPDATE - 6.59 pm IST (1.29 pm GMT) - As if it wasn’t obvious already, it’s official now! The toss has been DELAYED due to rain. It continues to rain steadily, and several puddles have already formed on the outfield. That said, given the unpredictability of Bengaluru weather and the venue’s excellent drainage system, things could turn around quite quickly. Stick around for more news!
UPDATE - 6.38 pm IST (1.08 pm GMT) - Unfortunately, it’s absolutely pelting down in Bengaluru. The square is covered, and by the looks of it, we are in for a long wait before we get any kind of action. Stay tuned for further updates.
The emotions will run high at the Chinnaswamy as Virat Kohli steps onto the field for the first time since his Test retirement. In what feels like a spiritual homecoming, fans have united on social media, urging everyone to wear whites to the stadium in a tribute to Kohli. However, the weather could throw a spanner in the works, with rain looming large and threatening to dampen what promises to be a special occasion. Let's hope that we are lucky with the weather.
As for KKR, their playoff chances are hanging by a thread. With just 11 points from 12 matches, even winning both of their remaining games might not be enough, as they will need luck and some favourable results elsewhere. The defending champions from last season just haven’t clicked this year. Their batting has been especially underwhelming, highlighted by their failure to chase a mere target of 112 against Punjab Kings in one of the season’s biggest upsets.
RCB are flying high this season. With 16 points in the bag, they are now pushing hard to secure a top-two finish, with a win tonight confirming their place in the playoffs. Virat Kohli has been in sensational form, blazing through attacks at the top, while the middle order has chipped in with handy cameos throughout. One of RCB’s age-old weaknesses, inconsistent bowling, seems to have finally been resolved this year. However, a huge blow for them is the absence of Josh Hazlewood, who is recovering from a shoulder niggle.
Hello and welcome, folks! The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is all set to roar to life, and for good reason! After a brief halt in IPL 2025 due to security concerns, the tournament returns with a bang. It’s match number 58, and fittingly, the same two teams that kickstarted this season will headline the resumption as Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on the Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-stakes clash.
... MATCH DAY ...
Cricket's heartbeat returns to India just when we needed it most. After a very challenging past week that tested India’s collective spirit, unity, and security, the IPL 2025 slides back into our lives like an old friend, offering that familiar comfort only sport can provide. In the midst of this unexpected pause, cricket's landscape shifted dramatically with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bidding farewell to Test cricket. These modern-day legends of the Indian team will now channel all that brilliance exclusively into ODIs and the IPL, giving fans something special to look forward to each time they step onto the field. Now, as the tournament inches toward its business end, Royal Challengers Bengaluru prepare to host Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 58 at Bengaluru. With 16 points already secured, they're knocking on the playoff door as one more win and they're through. But cricket's a funny game of rhythm and momentum. After two weeks away from the pitch, can RCB simply pick up where they left off and extend that impressive four-match winning streak? That's the beautiful uncertainty that makes this game so captivating. Virat Kohli stands as RCB's batting cornerstone this season, joining the elite club of just five batters to cross the 500-run threshold. His consistency has been remarkable with seven fifties, and that impressive average showcases his brilliant form. In Phil Salt's temporary absence due to fever since that RR fixture nearly a month ago, Jacob Bethell has stepped up admirably as Kohli's opening partner, even claiming a half-century of his own. The team took a hit with Devdutt Padikkal's season-ending hamstring injury, prompting them to bring in Mayank Agarwal to fill that crucial number 3 position. There's some uncertainty surrounding skipper Rajat Patidar's fitness as well, though overall, the batting unit has shown good cohesion between top and middle order. What's concerning is the significant run gap between their star performer Kohli and their second-highest contributor, Salt. The middle order will need to shoulder more responsibility moving forward. On the bowling front, Josh Hazlewood's availability due to fitness remains questionable, which could see Lungi Ngidi return to the playing eleven. With international commitments looming in June and beyond, several boards are recalling their players, with Romario Shepherd expected to miss the playoffs should RCB qualify. Fortunately, they'll still have overseas talents like Phil Salt, Tim David, and Liam Livingstone at their disposal. KKR's situation looks quite different from RCB's, with their overseas contingent remaining largely intact aside from questions around Moeen Ali's participation. But they're facing a much steeper climb with just two games left to play. They need both wins just to reach 15 points, and even then, they'll be watching scorecards elsewhere hoping for favorable results. That defeat against CSK really did damage their playoff aspirations. While Ajinkya Rahane has been the batting lineup's backbone, Gurbaz's inconsistent form at the top hasn't helped matters. Only Sunil Narine and young Angkrish Raghuvanshi have shown the necessary fight when it counts. Venkatesh Iyer's bat has been unusually quiet this season, and they desperately need him to find form in these closing fixtures. The same goes for Rinku Singh. At least Andre Russell seems to be warming up with consecutive thirty-plus scores in the last two outings. In the bowling department, Varun Chakaravarthy continues to lead the charge, well supported by the Indian pace duo of Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora. The history between these two sides promises another thriller for the ages. We've seen countless edge-of-your-seat encounters in this rivalry, and Saturday's clash has all the ingredients for something special. It's the classic contrast with RCB's relative comfort against KKR's do-or-die desperation. History favors the visitors, with KKR enjoying a commanding 8-4 record at Chinnaswamy and an overall 20-15 advantage in head-to-head matchups. But cricket's about momentum, and that's firmly with the home side after they've turned around their fortunes with back-to-back victories on home soil following that rocky start. As the City of Gardens prepares to witness another chapter in this storied rivalry, fans can expect passion, drama and cricketing brilliance in equal measure. However, the weather's been a bit bleh lately in Bengaluru. With rain in the atmosphere, the weather forecast on match day looks a bit so-so, but as cricket fans, we just hope that rain stays away during this high octane clash.
