A huge task ahead - So 208 is the magic number for the Mumbai Indians to get another two points. CSK have been here before, many times, and they know exactly what to do with a total like this. As per the on-air graphic, they have 23 wins out of 29 when defending 200 or more. And from MI's perspective, they have not been all guns blazing in the Powerplay and for such run chases, a good start in the first six is a must. A mouth-watering chase is on the other side. Up for a quick word - ​​​​​Ashwani Kumar of MI says that back-of-a-length deliveries were holding a bit and feels that when you bowled fuller, the ball was coming onto the bat better. Feels that their batters can certainly chase down this total. On the dew, Kumar reckons that there is a bit of wind, so the dew hasn't settled in yet, but it might come in later on. A swinging second half - CSK were motoring along at a very fair clip, but Ashwani Kumar gave Mumbai Indians a way back in. Fresh from a four-wicket haul in the previous game, he carried that form straight into this one, showing exceptional control with his short balls and pace variations, and was rewarded with the wicket of Brevis. What MI executed particularly well through this phase was keeping Samson starved of strike while chipping away at the other end. The result was a tidy 76/2 in overs 7 to 15. But Samson stood tall and unbeaten. He opened up in the final few overs and blazed his way to a century, single-handedly dragging CSK to a very respectable total, with 41 coming off the last 3 overs.

Ghazanfar controls, but CSK hold firm - A typical Wankhede surface, true enough for the batters but with just enough turn to keep the spinners interested. Samson gave CSK another explosive Powerplay, but the middle stretch brought some resistance. Gaikwad, after threatening to cut loose, was undone by Ghazanfar, who also knocked Dube out, and Santner conjured enough guile to fox Sarfaraz and send him packing. Yet at 111/3 at halfway, the Super Kings were in a healthy position, with Samson very much the engine driving this innings forward.

Sanju Samson show at Wankhede - It does not get much more competitive than this between two sides who bring out the very best in this IPL El Classico. Right from the first ball, it was a neck-and-neck fight. CSK bossed the first six, MI made a decent comeback in the middle phase, only for the Super Kings to bounce back in the last few overs to get past 200. And in the centre of it all, stood Sanju Samson, who smashed a classy century, second in yellow colours.

Krish Bhagat to Sanju Samson, FOUR! What a way to finish from Sanju Samson. He notches up his 5th IPL HUNDRED as CSK finish with 207/6 on the board. Krish Bhagat goes short and bangs it in halfway down the pitch, around off. Samson hangs back, rides the bounce and pulls it aerially towards the left of the vacant square leg fence. The ball just bounces inside the ropes and Samson takes off his helmet to soak in all of the deserved applause. 16 runs come off the final over.

Has that cleared the ropes? Looks like it, but the on-field umpires want to have a look at whether it sailed all over. The replay shows that it just bounced before the ropes and tripped over. So it's a four.

Krish Bhagat to Sanju Samson, A golden dot ball now. Bhagat goes for the yorker, just outside off. Samson hangs back and gets an inside edge on the attempted slog and the ball rolls to the left of short fine leg, where the fielder makes a fumbling stop.

Chennai Super Kings were going at well over 12 runs an over in the Powerplay but Mumbai Indians have pulled things back in this middle phase and the scoring rate is now just over 10 runs an over. Wickets at regular intervals have helped MI slow CSK down but Sanju Samson is still out there and looks in pristine touch. He does need a partner at the other end, as the loss of constant wickets can build pressure on him. MI will be looking to pick up a wicket or two quickly after the break and pull things back further. Dube is generally so good against spin but he falls to a spinner and CSK lose their third wicket with the score being 91.

STRATEGIC BREAK! So whose Powerplay was it? The Super Kings would be delighted to get a flying start yet again in the Powerplay. Whereas MI would be happy to at least pick a couple of big wickets en route. But fairly, it looks like a good batting wicket with a little bit of help for the spinners, while the likes of Hardik have been taken to the cleaners. Samson has looked proactive and will look to keep the tempo up with Dube trying to get himself settled before unleashing. An interesting middle phase coming up. Mitchell Santner to Sarfaraz Khan, OUT! TIMBER! A clever bit of bowling from Mitchell Santner. Mitch slows it up and tosses it a bit higher. The ball lands around middle stump. Sarfaraz Khan goes down to sweep again but plays all around it. He says he is focused on picking up something new from each match and feels the campaign has gone well overall. On being asked about picking up a wicket on the very first ball of his IPL career, he says it is a feeling he simply cannot forget, recalling how the moment left him briefly stunned before the reality sank in. Shares that he celebrated and quickly looked ahead to the next delivery. On being asked about his parents' reaction, he shares that there is nothing quite like seeing them happy and backing him through every small moment. Also mentions that he always urges them to come and watch him play and wish him luck in person. On being asked about the biggest lesson from being part of the CSK setup, he details his conversations with the bowling coaches have pointed him firmly towards death overs bowling. Further details that it is the area he wants to develop the most, given how decisive it is in T20 cricket.

We have got someone with the mic - MI's Mitchell Santner, it is. Santner starts by talking about the last game and says that it was much needed and feels that it was a complete performance last time out. Feels that they can take the momentum into this game and says that both teams know each other pretty well. On keeping a calm head when the team is losing, Mitch says that it is the hardest thing to do but feels that as long as you have clear plans and execute them, everything else is fine. On having success in the Impact Player era, Santner says that the pitches did turn a bit last year, which hasn't been the case so far this season and reiterates that it is about executing your skills and being brave. Mitch ends by saying that it is always great to play at the Wankhede and there's extra bounce for the spinners as well but at the same time the pitch is flat and the ball does travel quite a bit.

No Hitman and Mahi tonight? An MI-CSK game without Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni is a bit like watching a classic film with two of its lead actors cut out. Both former captains had raised hopes by turning up at practice sessions. While Rohit is there, no one can spot MSD and we are hearing that he has not made it to the venue. It seems, in all likelihood, this one will go on without them taking the field.

PITCH REPORT - Former Kiwi pacer, Danny Morrison is pitchside. He starts by saying that it is Pitch number 7, which is almost smack in the middle. Informs that the square boundaries are 64 meters and 63 meters on either side, with the straight hit being 74 meters. Former Proteas pacer, Dale Steyn, joins Danny and says that the pitch looks excellent for batting. However, Steyn cites the example of Arshdeep Singh, who executed his plans to perfection and when the norm is about 230 and you keep it down to about 210, you've done your job as well. The duo further add that there's an even covering of grass on it and there will be some purchase early on for the pacers, but also reckon that there will be dew later on, which will help the batters.

UPDATE - Chennai Super Kings have confirmed the official signing of Akash Madhwal as a replacement for Ayush Mhatre, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a left hamstring injury. Mhatre's absence leaves a significant void at the top for CSK, given he was their leading run-scorer this season. Who slots in at number three now is one of the more interesting selection questions facing the franchise, with Urvil Patel among those in contention for the role. The Madhwal signing, though, offers some relief on the bowling front, along with the addition of Aussie left-arm quick, Spencer Johnson. With Khaleel Ahmed already ruled out, CSK's pace attack was looking thin, and Madhwal walking in shores that up at just the right time.

But right now, neither is where they want to be, and that makes this contest even more dangerous. El Classico time - Some rivalries are built over seasons. This one grew with us. The IPL has seen many contests rise and fade, a few fresh rivalries trying to claim space, but this one has never needed validation. It simply is the biggest. Ten trophies between them, five each. Blue against yellow. Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. It does not get bigger, it does not get louder. Yet this time, it carries a different kind of tension. Mumbai Indians are still chasing that feeling from 2020, a rare stretch of silence for a team that once made winning a habit. Chennai Super Kings, since their title in 2023, have not quite looked like themselves either, slipping into a phase where victories have been harder to come by than expected. For two teams that once set the standard, this has been unfamiliar territory. Even this season has mirrored their struggles. Two wins, four losses each. Almost like they have walked the same path to arrive here. Now, as they step into this clash and reach the halfway mark of their campaign, it is about momentum, belief, and perhaps, a turning point in seasons that are still searching for a spark. An upward tick - Just like a bloodbath in the share market eventually gives way to a slight uptick, Mumbai Indians have had their moment of recovery in Ahmedabad. They arrived at the clash against the Titans on the back of four consecutive defeats, but a collective performance turned things around in emphatic fashion. The win not only gave their net run rate a significant boost but also lifted them off the bottom of the table to seventh place. As they prepare for their fourth home game, the mood in the camp looks markedly different. That is what a win does. One slice of positivity can shift the atmosphere across an entire squad. And MI had plenty of reasons to feel good. The biggest concern heading into that game was Jasprit Bumrah's wicketless run through the first five matches. It ended in the most Bumrah way possible. Summoned to open the attack, possibly for the first time in a long while, he struck with the very first ball of his spell and put that arid run firmly to rest. There was a similar murmur building around Tilak Varma. Before the previous match, he had managed just 43 runs across five outings. Even against GT, he was slow out of the blocks, scratching around on 19 off 22 balls. What followed over the next 23 balls was something else entirely. He rained mayhem on Ahmedabad, hammering his way to a century that transformed MI's total. The margin of victory was 99 runs. Just two fewer than what Tilak scored. The juxtaposition could not have been any sharper. Sharper look with the ball - What Bumrah's spell of 1/15 did was feed off into a slightly revamped bowling unit, one that looked a bit thin on experience. There were also indications of some tough calls being made as their bowling unit lacked the necessary penetration in crucial phases, and MI followed through. Shardul and Chahar, both of whom had been pretty inconsistent so far, were benched. In came fresh energy in the form of Krish Bhagat, who bowled an impressive two-over spell, while impact player Ashwani Kumar stole the spotlight with a fantastic four-wicket haul. It is worth remembering that last season too, Ashwani kicked off his campaign with a four-for and got noticed. It was also MI's best powerplay bowling performance of the season in terms of wickets taken. In the spin department, AM Ghazanfar has been simply outstanding. Baring one game, where he was expensive and went wicketless, he has been on a wicket-taking spree. From back-to-back three games, he has picked up two wickets in each, and has been extremely miserly as well. Whereas Mitchell Santner, whenever called upon, has displayed his wizardry sincerely and effectively as well. Big names yet to fire - Of all the experienced names in the MI batting unit, it is Naman Dhir who leads the run-scoring charts this season. He has been handed an opportunity in every game and has not let down those who trusted him. Quinton de Kock, meanwhile, has already notched a century this year in just two games. But more often than not, MI's top order is still searching for that fifth gear in the Powerplay that can set the tone early. It has not been a terrible season by any means, but SKY has lacked the consistency that defines him at his best. Just one half-century to his name so far, he will be keen to put some runs on the board. He does carry a fine record against the opposition, with 411 runs against CSK, second only to Rohit among active MI batters. Also the fact that Suryakumar Yadav scored a match-winning 68* at the Wankhede last year vs Super Kings, will motivate him. The wounded Lions - Three straight losses, two comeback wins at home, and then another glaring defeat on the road. CSK are yet to register a win away from home this season and will hope Wankhede is where that changes. But they have been hit hard once again. Losing Khaleel Ahmed in the pace department was blow enough. Ayush Mhatre, being ruled out for the remainder of the season, has come as a genuine shock to the yellow army. The next-gen star sustained a left hamstring injury while batting against SRH, having slotted in at number three and taken to the role with remarkable ease. With 201 runs at a strike rate touching 178, he was CSK’s highest run-scorer and their most exciting presence at the top of the order. No official replacement has been announced as yet for him. A major boost has arrived in the pace department, however. Spencer Johnson has joined the squad, the tall left-arm Australian quick who was originally drafted as Nathan Ellis’ replacement but was kept away by a back injury of his own. Now fit and available, his inclusion brings a new dimension to CSK’s attack. The only puzzle it creates is around their four overseas slots, and how they choose to fit him in will be one of the more interesting selection calls. A huge positive - CSK’s most significant improvement this season has come with the bat, and more specifically in the Powerplay. It was a phase that badly let them down last year, where they averaged between 7-8 runs an over, among the worst in the competition. This season, that number has jumped in the north of 10s an over through the field restrictions. The intent has clearly been there from the likes of Sanju Samson and Mhatre up top to set the tone nicely. The Gaikwad conundrum - Coming to Mumbai, all eyes will be on skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. So far, it has been a quieter season than he would have liked with the bat. Just 82 runs in six matches at a strike rate of only 112.32 for a batter who has been the cornerstone of CSK’s top order for years. The additional burden of captaincy may well be playing its part, and Gaikwad himself will be aware that a big innings is overdue. He averages 41.57 vs MI with three half centuries and Wankhede could be just the stage for him to rediscover his fluency. An undercooked middle order - One way or the other, the problems persist for the Super Kings, and this season the middle order has been a case of feast or famine. Dewald Brevis is a welcome addition, but consistency has eluded him so far. Shivam Dube has been a pale shadow of himself. Sarfaraz Khan brings a certain stability that is hard to quantify, but even with the required firepower in the ranks, CSK are yet to chase a total beyond 190 since 2018, a stat that speaks for itself. The SRH game only made it worse. Needing 82 off 60 balls, they botched it up and extended that unwanted record further. Kamboj leads the way - CSK have been investing in Anshul Kamboj with a long-term lens, and the returns have been encouraging. He has been a touch expensive at times this season, but the wickets have kept coming consistently, and he currently dons the Purple Cap with 13 to his name. He brings value in the powerplay, but it is his execution in the death that has been particularly noteworthy, those around-the-wicket wide yorkers giving batters very little to work with. Since the beginning of the 2025 season, with 21 wickets to his name, Kamboj is the second-highest wicket-taker for CSK, only behind Noor Ahmad (28 wickets in the same phase), who is just beginning to hit his stride. And in the absence of experience around him, Kamboj has quietly taken up the responsibility of leading the CSK bowling attack, and so far, he has carried it well. Around him, Jamie Overton has complemented well with his excessive pace and bounce. But it is the second line of attack that remains the question mark, and CSK will need more consistency from that group if they are to challenge the opposition. The OGs coming back? It is hard to imagine an MI versus CSK clash without two of Indian cricket's greatest. Two captains who built these franchises into the most successful sides in IPL history. Rohit Sharma's availability remains under the clouds. Reports suggest he could be fit enough to return, and MI would dearly want him back. With 881 runs against CSK, he is their most successful batter in this fixture, but complete clarity on his fitness is still awaited. MS Dhoni, on the other hand, has been dropping hints of his own. He was spotted wicketkeeping in the nets at Wankhede, which has set tongues wagging. He has been sidelined since suffering a calf strain and is yet to play this season.
