India
Welcome back to the third innings! The umpires are out to the middle and the Indian players circle in a team huddle before taking their fielding positions. The usual opening duo for New Zealand is also out to the middle. Devon Conway will be partnered by his skipper Tom Latham who will face Akash Deep with the new red cherry in his hand. Here we go...
... THIRD INNINGS ...
Well then, this match is nicely set up and hangs right in balance with this late surge from New Zealand in this second session. It is moving at a very brisk pace as we speak. India do not have a very healthy lead in all fairness and their batting collapses have surfaced once again. But what's done is done. Now, they have the challenging task of restricting New Zealand from running away with the lead. New Zealand on the flip side will aim to bat throughout the day without losing many wickets as we still have 10 and a half sessions left in this Test. But, batting on this surface is not going to be a cakewalk for them either. As the pitch will further deteriorate, the Indian spinners will aim to extract more turn and bounce to ambush the Kiwi batters. A riveting next innings on the cards, folks! Stay tuned!
That's where the tweakers came in handy for the Kiwis. Ajaz Patel, in particular, redeemed himself with a spectacular 5-fer and ran through the lower middle order of India effectively, reducing them from a comfortable 180/4 to 247/9. He was very accurate with his lines and lengths. The ball gripped and turned prodigiously and Phillips too chipped in with a wicket along with Ish Sodhi and Henry too getting one. Washington Sundar though didn't lose up easily and counterpunched to extend of what was a very thin lead in India's bank. His quickfire 37 helped India to mark a lead of 28 runs before an unfortunate run out caused India's end. India couldn't get their lead of what was anticipated from them especially the way Pant and Gill were batting.
Cut to the second day. India had a mountainous task as they trailed by 149 runs with just six wickets in hand. Brushing off the collapse, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill constructed a monumental 96-run stand together with the former being customary to his approach. Both notched up their respective fifties and were also provided one reprieve each in the field. But as soon as Pant fell, the scoring rate dipped a bit and the boundaries were hard to find by. Shubman Gill was the next one to depart, missing unfortunately by just ten runs from his ton, and again, the India lower middle order was exposed badly.
After bowling out New Zealand within the first day on a not-so-challenging total of 235, India had a golden opportunity to continue with the momentum while batting. They did start well as Yashasvi Jaiswal looked composed for his 30 but moving towards the close of the first day, a dramatic collapse pushed India way back into the contest as they lost Rohit and Kohli quickly on cheap scores.

Ajaz Patel to Washington Sundar, OUT! RUN OUT! An anti-climatic end to the Indian innings! Ajaz Patel lands this short again and around off, Washington Sundar steers it away through point and runs the single very quickly thinking there is a chance of a second run but he gives up that idea. However, Akash Deep is a bit late turn back, and Rachin Ravindra quickly charges onto the ball and throws it right at the top of the stumps where Tom Blundell collects and breaks the stumps in a flash. Akash Deep did not want to put a dive in and tries to drag his bat inside but the replay shows that he is short of his crease. Sundar is disappointed as he was looking good to extend this lead even further but now India have been bowled out for 263 runs.

Drinks! This game has turned again. New Zealand have been excellent from the start of this session and have reduced India to 247/9. The lead is just 12 runs and the Kiwis will want to keep it as low as possible and pick up the last wicket quickly. The wicket is turning a lot now and with variable bounce, batting is certainly not going to be easy from now on. Washington Sundar now has the responsibility to manage with the last batter Akash Deep and extend the lead further.

Ajaz Patel to Ravichandran Ashwin, OUT! 6TH FIVE-WICKET HAUL FOR AJAZ PATEL, ALL IN THE SUBCONTINENT! And he continues to weave his magic at Wankhede. India are 9 wickets down now with a very thin lead at their helm. Patel stays around the stumps and loops it up on a fullish length, it lands, grips, bounces and turns sharply away from the batter. Ravichandran Ashwin is drawn forward and looks to push it through the off side but that excessive turn and bounce takes the outside edge of his willow and Daryl Mitchell with his safe pair of hands takes a regulation catch at the first slip. Ravichandran Ashwin departs on 6 off 13 balls and India have now slipped down badly against Ajaz Patel.

Ajaz Patel to Washington Sundar, A huge appeal for LBW but the umpire stays unmoved! Drops it fuller and on the off stump line, it grips and sharply turns back into the left-hander. Washington Sundar is caught a bit off guard as he gets in a tangle whether to commit it on the front foot or stay on the back foot and finds himself stuck in the middle. Plays over the line as the ball turns in and passes close to the bat. A review has been taken for LBW. UltraEdge shows a clear gap between the bat and the ball. Ball Tracking confirms that the ball is sliding down the leg side. A green saves Sundar and New Zealand burn a review here.

Welcome back to the post-Lunch session. The umpires punctually make their way out to the middle. The New Zealand players circle up in a huddle before spreading out to the field. Shubman Gill, unbeaten on 70, and Ravindra Jadeja on 10, to resume their innings for India. And it will be Ajaz Patel (13-1-76-2) to bowl the first over of the second session. Here we go...
... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...
Well then, the first session has flown by in this second day and it hangs right in balance with a slight tilt toward the hosts. With a long batting lineup still to follow, India will be keen to get the lead in the second session and stretch it into a potential one. While New Zealand's goal will be to run through the lower middle order as they have done throughout this Test series. An immersive post-Lunch session will begin right after 40 minutes or so. Stay tuned.
Ish Sodhi was introduced to create an inroad against the two well-set batters, who love to play against spin. He did make an impact by removing Pant off a prodigious turning delivery that caught him off guard. India could well had been 7 down had Henry and Chapman didn't shell those easy sitters. However, Pant's wicket slowed down things a bit as the boundaries dried up and Jadeja and Gill batted with the aim to just see through the session together. But more importantly, even in a slowdown, India prevented any maiden over.
New Zealand, despite starting the day in a commanding position, were caught off guard when Ajaz Patel faced an early charge against him in his opening over. Their frustration only mounted when a couple of catches were grassed off Phillips' bowling. India capitalized on that and balanced aggression with caution to wrest back momentum. Ajaz Patel who looked well the previous day, had his lines and lengths disturbed pretty early on and hence, New Zealand leaked runs at an alarming in the first hour.
Both of them eventually notched up their respective fifties. But it was Pant who took only 36 deliveries to do so in his customary approach. His whirlwind innings brought India's deficit down to double digits in what seemed like mere moments. The ball was turning with variable bounce, but what Indian batters did here was use their feet effectively to negate any trouble. Rather than getting bogged down, they minimized dot balls, ensuring the scoreboard ticked along consistently.
The first hour of Test cricket often proves critical for the batters, and India faced a daunting challenge with their backs to the wall. However, Rishabh Pant made an immediate statement, especially relishing the contest against Ajaz. Brushing aside the previous evening's dramatic collapse, he launched into an eventful first over that set an assertive tone for India. At the other end, Shubman Gill settled in nicely, showing impressive defensive technique and benefiting from a vital dropped chance. The partnership flourished as Pant maintained his aggressive intent while Gill provided steady support.
LUNCH, DAY 2! Session Summary - 24 overs, 109 runs, 1 wicket. Aggression and resilience. All about the first session summed up. India would be mightily pleased to walk back into the sheds losing just a solitary wicket and effectively shrinking the deficit to just 40 runs courtesy to that 96-run alliance between Gill and Pant. New Zealand, on the other hand, leaked runs at an alarming rate of almost 4.5 rpo and need to regroup to strike back.
Halt. The spider cam is stuck just over the ground, and hence a slight delay. The umpires are waiting for it to move up. It seems to have malfunctioned and there are only about four minutes to go for Lunch. And just when the umpires called for Lunch, the spider cam started working, but the players had already started walking off the field by then. Pretty weird way to end an engaging first session of play.

Ish Sodhi to Rishabh Pant, OUT! A huge appeal for LBW and up goes the finger. Sodhi provides a huge crucial breakthrough for New Zealand. Rishabh Pant has a chat with Gill and just with a couple of seconds remaining on the timer, he signals the 'T' and challenges the on-field decision. Sodhi comes from around the stumps and lands fairly outside off. It pitches, grips and stays low and prodigiously turns back into the left-hander. Rishabh Pant goes on the back foot to work it to the leg side but gets beaten by the turn and lack of bounce. The ball passes close to the bat and pings his front pad. UltraEdge shows no spike and the Ball Tracking comes up with the ball hitting the leg stump on the umpire's call. OUT IT IS! Michael Gough, the umpire, gets it right yet again this time and this just might be the breakthrough the Kiwis were looking for. A celebration in unison from them as Pant departs on almost a run-a-ball 60. India are 180/5 down now, trailing by 55 runs.

Drinks! Well, the first hour of this second day has flown by and not for a second it felt monotonous. Having the momentum against them, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill have effectively countered the challenging first hour and more so, they have dictated terms so far, blending in aggression with caution. On the other hand, New Zealand would be kicking themselves as they let the momentum slip and Gill's dropped catch furthered their frustrations. Ajaz Patel looked a bit off rhythm as his lines and lengths were disturbed early on. As a result, the deficit for India has now shrunk to 72 runs. India would like to go unblemished through the session while a couple of wickets here will catapult New Zealand back in the contest. An interesting next hour of play on the cards.

Ajaz Patel to Shubman Gill, Oh, what happened here? Ajaz drifts it outside leg, on a fuller length, Shubman Gill taps it to the leg side. Ajaz runs to his right to mid on, picks and throws to the keeper. But the throw is a bit wayward and Blundell fails to collect it behind the wickets. It rolls back to the keeper where the first slip fielder dives and stops the ball. A single taken. But, Pant was a bit laboured to complete the run.

All in readiness now! The sun is shining brightly in Mumbai and we can see the players making their way out to the middle now. New Zealand are taking up their respective field positions while it will be Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill to resume batting for India. Let's play...
A fresh dawn brings new possibilities - India must pick up the pieces and mount a comeback, while New Zealand aims to keep their foot on the pedal. As the first ball approaches, the age-old saying ‘morning shows the day’ could well determine which team writes today's story and dictate terms and conditions of this Test. Stay tuned as the first ball of Day 2 is not too far away.
In this game of competing outlooks, New Zealand sees themselves just six quality deliveries away from rattling India's batting order and containing their lead. India, meanwhile, believes they're a couple of responsible solid partnerships away from building a commanding position that could put them back in a strong position.
The Kiwis' bowling dominance in Mumbai is no surprise - they've already proven their mettle by skittling India for 46 in Bengaluru and then tearing through their batting lineup in Pune. This is just another chapter in their impressive run. And coming into the second day, we might possibly see more spin being deployed early on to ambush the vulnerable Indian batters.
Despite missing Santner through injury, New Zealand finished strong in the final half-hour. Ajaz Patel, after a streak of underwhelming returns, kind of found his rhythm back, striking twice to give the visitors a crucial late surge. And of course, Wankhede being his happy hunting ground, the old memories were refreshed from 2021 when he took all ten wickets here on this very ground.
As overnight batters Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill resume India's innings, they'll need to navigate the crucial first hour with patience and composure along with dealing the grip and turn. The humid Mumbai conditions, which had already drained the visiting team on day one, will test their temperament as they look to build on their partnership.
Eight deliveries in fifteen chaotic minutes turned the game on its head. A series of self-inflicted wounds - poor shot selection by a set batter, a wasted review by a nightwatchman on a plumb LBW, and a needless run-out of the most impactful batter in the world - left India reeling. With Rohit and Virat's form woes continuing, the middle order now faces a mountainous task. Their mission - not just to match New Zealand's total, but to extend a lead that could prove decisive. With spinners finding increasing bite and turn, and Indian batters having looked vulnerable against the tweakers, the pressure is mounting faster on the hosts.
Hello and a very warm welcome to our coverage of Day 2 of this third and the final Test which is being played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. India have already lost the series and their aim here is not only to prevent a whitewash but also win this game and maintain their position in the top two in this cycle of WTC. It’s the second day and we are already into the second innings where India trail by 149 runs, with only 6 wickets in hand.
... DAY 2, SESSION 1 ...
Right then, that is it from an exciting Day 1 of this 3rd Test. India needs to build up a few partnerships to get back in the game while New Zealand will back themselves to make early inroads and put even more pressure on the hosts. Day 2 will begin at 4 am GMT, but you can join us early for all the build-up. Cheers!
Ravindra Jadeja is up for a flash interview. He says that he feels special to take a five-wicket haul. He feels grateful that he got the wickets when the team needed a breakthrough, especially in the heat. Says that the team did pretty well collectively and also appreciates Washington Sundar. Says he bowled extremely well and everyone played their roles with the ball. On being told about him crossing Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma in terms of wickets in Tests, he says that he didn't know about that. Says he doesn't see how many wickets he has taken and only sees when he is not playing. Is really happy to make contributions and progress. On being asked about the pace at which he bowling, he says that you have to mix the pace here and you can't be too slow through the air. Mentions that there's variable bounce off the surface so you have to use your arm to get more revolutions. On being asked about the last 15 minutes of collapse in the batting, he says it was unexpected and says that miscommunication happens. Ends by saying that they need to build partnerships and need to take a good lead.
The last session pretty much belonged to India until the last 15 minutes. It didn't take long for them to wrap the Kiwis up with Ravindra Jadeja completing a brilliant five-for and Washington Sundar adding a couple more to his tally. Trailing by 235, India came out with positive intent but once again Rohit Sharma fell after getting to a start despite getting a couple of lives. The pitch though still turned and bounced a lot but Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal mixed aggression with caution and didn't let the Kiwis bowlers settle in adding 53 runs together before the latter lost his patience and gave away his wicket to a pre-meditated shot. What followed was absolute chaos. Mohammed Siraj came in as nightwatchman but went back for a golden duck and took a review with him as well. Then Virat Kohli threw away his wicket calling for a non-existent run. India lost 3 wickets in the space of 8 balls and now Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant will have to rebuild from scratch on Day 2.
However, things didn't go their way at the start because Will Young and Daryl Mitchell got settled and battled through the heat to keep the scoreboard ticking. They batted through the first hour with Young notching up a fifty as well. Just as when things were settling, Ravindra Jadeja came in and broke the 87-run stand and picked up one more in the same over. Glenn Phillips also couldn't stay for long becoming the third victim of Jadeja. However, Mitchell didn't give his wicket away, and despite being cramped up and struggling with the heat for himself to a half-century with the Kiwis being at 192/6 at the end of the session.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, New Zealand would have liked to put up a few more runs on the board. They lost Devon Conway pretty early but the skipper Tom Latham and Will Young for them through that period. Akash Deep provided the early breakthrough but it took them a while to get the next. It was Washington Sundar who went bang bang towards the end of the session to put the hosts just ahead in the game.
SESSION SUMMARY - 129 runs and 8 wickets in 29.2 overs! A pretty eventful day of Test cricket! After a couple of shared sessions, it was looking like India were taking control of the game in the final session but New Zealand fought back brilliantly in the last 15 minutes of the day and made things even here going into Day 2. The hosts will be kicking themselves with how things panned out towards the end and it was absolute hara-kiri giving away the momentum to the Kiwis.

Rachin Ravindra to Virat Kohli, OUT! DEAR, OH DEAR! RUN OUT! Almost a reminiscence of the Cheteshwar Pujara dismissal against Australia at The Adelaide Oval in the first Test in 2018, when Pat Cummins scored a direct hit from mid on to catch Pujara short at the bowling end. The batter and opposition are different this time but the result and the subsequent questions regarding the run precisely the same. In both cases, the call was questionable from the batter and the fielder was a fast bowler. Was the call made probably because Kohli felt that Henry might have been resting on his heels? And basically, was this run necessary at this stage of the day? Not sure. Kohli perishes too after a boundary. This is going from bad to worse now for India. A run out just at the brink of Stumps and Virat Kohli is absolutely animated with himself. Fuller in length, and at the stumps. Kohli got on the front foot and pushed it to mid on, calling through for a quick single. Matt Henry, at mid on was quick to pick and throw in a motion and scored a terrific direct hit at the non-striker's end. Kohli was compelled to put in a full-length dive to get home. The Kiwis started to celebrate and the decision was referred upstairs. The TV umpire confirms that Kohli's bat was just a foot outside the crease when the stumps were hit. It was Kohli's call so no one else could be really blamed. Heartbreaking last 15 minutes or so for India as they have now slipped from a comfortable 78/1 to a precarious 84/4. On the other hand, terrific from New Zealand to keep on fighting till the very end.
Is that a run out? New Zealand looks very confident and Matt Henry might have pulled something special here. The replay shows he has got his man and it is not any other batter, it is Virat Kohli who is found short of his crease.

India burn a crucial review and this will be part of the debate as well. Ajaz Patel is on a HAT TRICK now. India has slipped to 78/3 after a decent start.

A mandatory concussion test for Tom Blundell as he took a blow right on the helmet grill. The physio rush out to attend the Kiwi wicket-keeper. Also, the umpires call in for drinks. Well, India's opening partnership dilemmas continue to haunt them as yet again, Rohit Sharma lost his wicket very early despite getting a reprieve. Rohit though played a few delightful shots before perishing but that's the most concerning part for India in this series - the opening stand failing to deliver. Shubman Gill too, has been thoroughly interrogated so far and is living on a knife's edge against the spin. Matt Henry filling in for Tim Southee has looked rock-solid with his lines and lengths and we might just see more spin as the day draws to a close. New Zealand would be pleased to get a wicket or two before Stumps while India's aim would be to prevent any further blemish to see through the day. An interesting hour or so left in the day now. Let's see how it pans out for both sides...

He hits the good length and just around off, this one hits the deck and takes off viciously, shapes away a touch too. We are back for India's reply! The players are making their way out to the middle now and the Kiwis spread out to take their respective field positions. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma are the two openers for India. Matt Henry has the new red cherry in his hand and is raring to go. Let's play...
... SECOND INNINGS ...
New Zealand will feel like they are a few runs short after opting to bat first. They were rocked early losing Devon Conway but Will Young and Tom Latham steadied the ship for a while. It was not easy to bat on this wicket with the heat, but Young and Daryl Mitchell were the two batters who showed great commitment and resilience to the Indian spin attack. Both of them scored half-centuries and it was their partnership of 87 runs that have put them in this position where they can put up a good fight. If you don't remember, the last time when Ajaz Patel played at Wankhede in a Test, it was in 2021, and he took all 10 wickets against India in the first innings. The Kiwis will be hoping for something similar to put pressure back on the hosts. Join us in a bit for India's reply.
A solid bowling performance from India! They have restricted New Zealand to 235 with Ravindra Jadeja leading the pack with an excellent five-wicket haul. Akash Deep made the early breakthrough, but then it was all about the spinners with the wicket also assisting them. There were a few moments when the hosts had to be patient and on a wicket like this, you have to do that and not overattack. Their patience was rewarded and the start from the previous game, Washington Sundar ended up with four wickets and wrapped things up as well.

Washington Sundar to Ajaz Patel, OUT! LBW! A huge confident appeal by everyone surrounding the batter and the umpire raises his finger instantly. Ajaz Patel though has reviewed it and challenged the on-field decision. He is in danger though as no shot is offered. Washington Sundar finishes with a spectacular 4-fer. Sundar comes from around the stumps and bowls it around off and drifts it into the batter off the pitch. Ajaz Patel takes a good stride across and looks to pad it away offering no shot at it. Ball Tracking comes up and clearly shows three reds. New Zealand have been bowled out on 235 with 20 overs or so remaining in the day.

Daryl Mitchell is quick to rock back and squats at it to guide it through the short third region but is beaten by the pace and just tries to guide it with soft hands. Opens the bat face and ends up slicing it off the outer half. The ball goes flat and low towards the first slip. Rohit Sharma shows good reflexes and is quick to react and takes a sharp catch to his right.

Welcome back for the final session of the first day! It continues to stay humid and unforgivingly warm in Mumbai. The umpires are punctual to walk out and so are the Indian players who take their respective field positions after a brief team talk near the ropes. Daryl Mitchell unbeaten on a gutsy 53 off 96 walks out to resume with the bat with Ish Sodhi. It will be Washington Sundar (13-2-50-2) to get the proceedings underway in the third session with the ball. Here we go...
... DAY 1, SESSION 3 ...
New Zealand got through the first hour of the session without losing any wickets. Will Young and Daryl Mitchell looked settled and scored at a good rate too with the former also getting to his first fifty of the series. However, their resistance was finally broken by Ravindra Jadeja when the stand was worth 87. He added two more pretty quickly with the Kiwis going from 159/3 to 187/6. Mitchell though held one end solidly staying unbeaten on 53 despite struggling a lot with the heat. He is the key for New Zealand if they want to get anything near 250, but India knows they have a long tail and will want to wrap things up quickly in the next session. Join us in about 20 minutes to see how things unfold in the final session.
SESSION SUMMARY - 100 runs and 3 wickets in 28 overs! A hard-fought session with both teams battling it out in the middle in the excessive heat of Mumbai. These are very challenging conditions and with the pitch offering turn and bounce, batting is not easy at all. However, the Kiwis have shown good commitment and are not making it easy for the hosts.

Ravindra Jadeja to Glenn Phillips, OUT! BOWLED'EM! Ravindra Jadeja gets his third wicket and has effectively ran through the Kiwi middle order. Jadeja, normally quick through the air, slows his pace a bit this time around. Lands a fuller-length delivery which comes in with the arm, on the middle stump line. Glenn Phillips is drawn forward and looks to defend it underneath his eyes as he looks to play for the turn. However, the ball straightens and hastens up and cuts the batter and knocks his middle stump. Glenn Phillips departs on 17 off 28 balls, and New Zealand are six down now.

There's no breeze out there and hence the players are finding it a bit difficult to negotiate the unforgiving humidity and heat. The two umpires have called the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to have a word with him. It is probably about Sarfaraz Khan who is constantly chirping at silly mid off. Daryl Mitchell isn't really happy with Sarfaraz doing so and the umpire Richard Illingworth is having a stern word with the Indian skipper and Sarfaraz. Virat Kohli too, joins the conversation as Rohit is looking a bit animated. All fine for now. But the constant chit-chat by the fielders can break the concentration of the batter and hence, the umpires finally decided to have a word.

Welcome back for the post-Lunch session, folks! The sun shines to its glory and greets the two umpires who make their way out to the middle. Indian players too, spread out to the field. Will Young, unbeaten on 38 will resume his innings with Daryl Mitchell. And it will be Washington Sundar (8-1-26-2) to start the proceedings after Lunch. Here we go...
... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...
Well then, India have managed to get an early upper hand in this game but this Test match is just warming up! The post-Lunch session - traditionally the best time to bat on - could be New Zealand's chance to counter-punch. Young's still standing firm and resolute, and the Kiwis will be eyeing this window to shift gears and steady their ship. India on the other hand, with the ball gripping and jumping, they'll be hunting for more scalps to build on their morning's success. An exciting second session coming up next. It will begin right after 40 minutes at 6.40 am GMT. Stay tuned.
As the pitch began to bare its teeth, runs came at a premium. The Kiwi batters unleashed their sweep shots arsenal to combat the vicious turn and bounce, but India's bowlers had their tails up. The surface showed glimpses of a rank-turner, and despite the batters' best efforts to innovate, it was India's bowlers who were calling the shots.
Credit to the Kiwis though – they kept the scoreboard moving, avoiding a maiden until the 16th over. But as the session wore on, India's spinners found their rhythm, extracting both grip and bounce. Young stood firm against the turning ball, but New Zealand desperately needed another solid partnership to build on. The surface was beginning to reveal its true colors, heavily supporting the turners, and surviving wasn't going to get any easier. Overall, it was Sundar who turned the screws, claiming two scalps with some absolute jaffas off the deck, also dismissing Ravindra for the third time in this series.
India's pace duo made their presence felt from the word go. Akash Deep was particularly impressive, generating extra bounce and zip off the deck even without much swing on offer. While he and Siraj laid the foundation with probing spells, it was Sundar who delivered the breakthrough, breaking the growing Latham-Young's 44-run resistance for the second wicket.
New Zealand rolled the dice to bat first, braving humid and energy-sapping conditions and a tricky surface. It wasn't that good surface to bat on as anticipated. Conway's early exit in the third over set alarm bells ringing, but Latham and Young dug in, crafting a determined 44-run partnership against India's spin tandem before the skipper perished after getting a good decent start.
LUNCH, DAY 1 - Session Summary - 27 overs, 92 runs, 3 wickets. In all fairness, India would be quite pleased with their bowling display as the players walk off the field for Lunch. Also, the over rate has been bang on, with someone like Jadeja bowling, who completes his overs at an express pace. New Zealand on the other hand, have been rocked early as they have lost their top order in a jiffy, including the in-form Rachin Ravindra.

Ravindra Jadeja to Daryl Mitchell, FOUR! Absolute chaos in the middle! Darts one full and on middle, angling in, Daryl Mitchell looks to play but gets a bit of an inside edge onto his pads as the ball rolls towards square leg. There is a huge appeal for LBW, but the umpire says no. In between all this, Mitchell wants the run but is sent back, and rightly so. Washington Sundar picks up and throws it at the batter's end where Pant is still appealing and Sarfaraz Khan does not back up as it runs away to the fence for a boundary. Rohit Sharma thinks about the review but decides against it in the end.

Drinks! Phew, the conditions have been really energy-sapping out there in Mumbai as the players take the first hydration break. Despite an early loss of a wicket, New Zealand has maintained a steady pace with Latham and Young negotiating the spin in tandem carefully. There's no visible swing and turn on offer so far but the variable bounce has surprised the batters. New Zealand will aim to prevent any further blemish whereas, India would be too pleased if they get a couple of more wickets before Lunch.

Akash Deep to Devon Conway, OUT! LBW! Another appeal for LBW and this time, up goes the finger! The clock ticks and Devon Conway does opt for a review to challenge the on-field decision. Seam-up delivery, on a fuller length from around the stumps, angling on the off and middle channel. Devon Conway takes a half stride forward to push to the mid off region but plays over the line as the ball nips back in with the angle. UltraEdge shows no bat involved and Ball Tracking comes up with three reds. OUT. Not quite sure why Conway reviewed it because as soon as the DRS was loading up, he had already started to walk back to the dressing room. Latham initially had signaled from the non-striker's end that the point of contact might be outside the line of the off-pole and hence, Conway decided to review it. New Zealand burn a review and more importantly, an early wicket. India get their first breakthrough and Akash Deep is all pumped up. New Zealand are 15/1.

Well then, all in readiness for this final Test to commence at Wankhede. It is typically sunny and humid Mumbai weather which greets the two umpires who make their way out to the middle. The Indian team is in a huddle, and Rohit Sharma is providing his words of wisdom before they spread out to take the field. Devon Conway and Tom Latham, the two openers for New Zealand are already out to the middle awaiting the fielders to spread out. Latham will face the first delivery and it will be Mohammed Siraj to bowl the first over for India. Three slips and a gully for him to begin with. And, here we go...
India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj (IN FOR JASPRIT BUMRAH).
New Zealand (Playing XI) - Tom Latham (C), Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (WK), Glenn Phillips, Ish Sodhi (IN FOR MITCHELL SANTNER), Matt Henry (IN FOR TIM SOUTHEE), Ajaz Patel, William O'Rourke.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of India says that they haven't played well in this series. Adds that it is a good pitch and is hopeful that they will restrict them from running away. On being asked about the World Test Championship standings, he says that they are taking one game at a time and the focus right now is on this game only. Also says that in the back of the mind, you need to look at what lies ahead, but it is important to stay in the present. Informs that Jasprit Bumrah is not well and Mohammed Siraj comes in for him.
Tom Latham, the captain of New Zealand says it looks like a good surface and is hopeful that can put a good total on the board. Mentions that what they did in Bengaluru was great but they had to switch quickly to Pune and nothing changes in this match as well. On being asked about New Zealand losing a series in Sri Lanka, and making a comeback in this series, Latham also mentions that Test cricket can be funny at times and believes that they didn't play that badly in Sri Lanka and says that sometimes, unfortunately, you can just fall on the wrong side of the result. Adds that they have tried to keep things simple and play their brand of cricket. Says there's a new opportunity in this game and it is all about adapting to the surface as quickly as possible. Informs two changes - Santner is out due to a side strain and Ish Sodhi comes in for him. Matt Henry is in for Tim Southee.
TOSS UPDATE - The flip of the coin lands in the favor of New Zealand and Tom Latham elects to BAT first.
PITCH REPORT - Dinesh Karthik and Murali Kartik are inspecting the Wankhede pitch. Karthik says that there is a bit of moisture in it and hence, it is dark brownish in colour. Adds that it is about understanding what happens when moisture is present. Kartik mentions that there will be a little bit of turn at the start and as the day progresses, it will get better to bat on. Also reckons that as the game progresses to the next days, it will take a lot of turn. Dinesh Karthik adds that there's help for everyone at Wankhede, as it always has been, and believes that the pacers will also get some initial help from the deck. Murali Karthik wraps up by saying that the captain who wins the toss will like to bat first.
India face their own pressure cooker. Six Tests left, with a non-negotiable mandate - win at least four to stay alive in the top two. This match is a psychological dress rehearsal before the gladiatorial challenge of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The hosts' commanding lead in the WTC standings has taken a serious hit after two shock defeats. One more slip-up, and they'll be playing catch-up when they head Down Under. This is their chance to forge their mental armor before cricket's most intense rivalry. So basically, one match. Two narratives. Infinite consequences. Who blinks first? Let’s find out together. Toss, pitch report, and teams coming up very shortly.
Survival, strategy, and stakes - this Test match is far from being a dead-rubber, but a high-wire act for both New Zealand and India. Reeling from a clean sweep against Sri Lanka, New Zealand has improved its PCT by taking this series home, but still stand at a critical crossroad. Fifth in rankings but still fragile. What seemed like a distant dream has suddenly sparked to life. Two stunning wins have transformed their WTC campaign from wishful thinking to genuine contention. Grab another victory in Mumbai, follow it up with a strong showing against England at home, and they could be eyeing their next WTC final appearance, but, conditions applied.
New Zealand on the hand, have done almost everything right. As spin to win is the mantra in the subcontinent, the Kiwi tweakers have been effective so far. The one who once wrote ‘Part time cricketer’ in his social media bio, has wreaked havoc. Mitchell Santner now stands as the highest wicket taker of the series, despite warming the bench in the series opener. His stints of 7 and 6 wicket hauls, respectively, in the second game has further elevated his stature in the team. With Southee and Henry complementing his magic, and Ravindra standing tall as the batting backbone, New Zealand aren't just playing cricket, they're rewriting the rulebook.
Amidst the rubble, Yashasvi Jaiswal stands tall as the lone beacon in the top order. Sarfaraz Khan and the middle order have shown glimpses of resistance, though questionable shot selection continues to haunt them. Washington Sundar has emerged as a silver lining, making the all-rounder spot his own with compelling performances. While the spin department holds its ground, the pace battery, despite Bumrah's presence, hasn't quite hit their usual menacing stride. The result? A team searching for answers on familiar soil where they once wrote their own rules.
The hosts have been rolled over and the biggest worry for them has been the inconsistencies in the batting department. And moreover, they have been vulnerable against what was considered their strong suit - spin bowling, that too, on home soil. While the coach Gautam Gambhir said their skills haven’t gone down against spin, the stats of this series state otherwise. Out of 40 wickets fallen across both matches, 21 were against spinners. That’s a tinge more than 50 per cent. Also, the form of the big guns has come under the scanner. While Rohit has two Test centuries to show for this year, it’s been more than two years since Virat scored a Test ton, and also in any format. Nothing to take away from these stalwarts, but it’s time for them to step up with more steeper challenge awaiting in the near future.
The stakes at the Wankhede Stadium couldn't be higher. While New Zealand eyes a historic whitewash, facing the possibility of their second-ever clean sweep in Test cricket. The only previous instance came against South Africa two decades back, in 2000 - a two-match series that, by a twist of fate, began at this very venue. Now, as the action returns to Mumbai's hustle and bustle, the hosts look to salvage pride and avoid the unexpected, while the Kiwis aim to pen down what would be their greatest Test triumph on Indian soil and rather, in their history of Test cricket.
India’s streak of a tremendous home dominance has been thoroughly challenged and breached by the Kiwis and find themselves in unfamiliar territory. New Zealand have already won this series, leading by 2-0. Winning Bengaluru, New Zealand won on the Indian soil after 1988, and the only third time overall. And then laying siege on Pune, displaying sheer dominance. Now, they possess the challenge of a clean sweeping the hosts in their own backyard.
The caravan of this 3-match Test series reaches to its final destination, also marking the last game for India on their home soil in this cycle of the World Test Championship 2023-25. On that note, we welcome all joining us for the coverage of the 3rd Test between India and New Zealand. We are in the ‘City of Dreams’ and the iconic Wankhede Stadium of Mumbai is all in readiness to host this immersive match.
