... THE RUN CHASE ...

Game on - It is all set up for an intriguing chase. Even with the older ball, there was enough movement on offer. Having troubled India's batters by relentlessly hitting the shorter lengths in the T20I series, the pace duo of Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue will be licking their lips at the prospect of exploiting the extra bounce Indian quicks found. With the sun beating down, it remains to be seen how much of a role the spinners will play. England have gone in with three spinners and also have the part-time options of Jacob Bethell and Joe Root. Do join us back in a bit for the chase.

Rescue act - With England in a spot of bother, a lot rested on Joe Root's shoulders to arrest the slide, and he rode his luck early on after being put down by Shivam Dube on 7. Will Jacks couldn't hang around for long, but Liam Dawson showcased his batting credentials with a maiden ODI fifty when his side needed it the most. The pair were watchful to begin with before the runs started to flow in that 121-run stand. Dawson eventually fell, and Root was left to run out of partners as Axar Patel completed the clean-up job with career-best ODI figures of 4/62.

Brar sparked the fightback - There was always expected to be some assistance with the new ball, and it did enough off the seam while the extra bounce kept the batters on their toes. Ben Duckett looked all at sea against Jasprit Bumrah early on, surviving a series of plays and misses and even copping a blow on the hand. Searching for a release, Duckett found it when Gurnoor Brar came into the attack and took a liking to the right-arm quick. With Bumrah out of the attack and Duckett beginning to find his rhythm, England looked set to seize control. But India came roaring back as Brar struck twice in quick succession before Bumrah and Prasidh returned to turn the game on its head.

Punch for punch - Joe Root left stranded at the other end as England have been out for 258. It was a bout where two heavyweights traded punches in the middle, and it made for thoroughly entertaining viewing. England, having slipped to 107/6, will be happy to have fought their way to a competitive total. India would have hoped to run through the rest of the batting after having England on the ropes, but they ran into stubborn resistance from Joe Root and Liam Dawson.

He does not get the timing right as the ball flies straight towards deep mid-wicket, where Washington Sundar pouches it safely. England are 250/8.

Dragged down by Axar, this is slower through and angling in at the hips. Dawson hops back to unleash the pull but the ball comes on slower than he expected. As a result, he does not quite get the timing right on the pull. Hits it flat to deep backward square leg, where Rohit Sharma comes in off the ropes and gets on a knee to take a safe catch. United for a cause - Edgbaston will turn blue today in support of the annual 'Blue for Bob' campaign. The initiative raises awareness and provides support for those affected by prostate cancer, while honouring the legacy of the late Bob Willis.

The skipper of India - Shubman Gill says that they were anyway looking to bowl first. With most of the squad coming off the T20I series, he feels they are already in the groove, while the rest have settled in nicely. Gill adds that the atmosphere in the camp has been excellent. Shubman acknowledges the importance of the series, especially with conditions likely to be similar to those expected in South Africa for next year's World Cup. Believes it is a good opportunity to test different combinations and players. He says it is great to have the experienced players back in the ODI setup, adding that their presence brings immense value to the side. Gill shares that he is excited for the series and that he has fond memories of playing in England, particularly at Edgbaston. Informs that they are going with four pacers, including Shivam Dube and the two spinners are Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.

The captain of England - Harry Brook says it looks like a good surface, but they are not sure how it will play, and they fancy themselves putting on a good score, and then maybe the spinners will get some help later on. Brook mentions that they are approaching this series the same way they approached the T20Is. It is about assessing the conditions quickly, communicating well and seeing where they are at the end of the day. The English skipper shares that having a similar group across formats gives him a lot of confidence and shows the trust they have in the squad. Reckons they are looking forward to giving a good challenge to India. Harry says that they have struggled a bit in this format over the last couple of years, but hopefully they can turn the page and start performing consistently. Ends by saying that they are going with two spinners and three seamers.

200 not out - Jos Buttler is all set to play his 200th ODI. Fittingly, he receives his commemorative cap from Eoin Morgan, the only other England player to achieve the feat. 

PITCH REPORT - Former India pacer Varun Aaron is near the deck. He says that it is bright and sunny in Birmingham. Adds that the dimensions are 67 meters all over, with just one part 2 meters short behind the wicket. Mentions that looking at the wicket, it is good news for the fast bowlers because there is a good covering of grass. Says that when he puts his thumb on it, it creates a decent indent, which means there is a lot of moisture on it. He reckons the team winning the toss will look to bowl first and get early wickets.

Looking for a revival  - England have looked only a shadow of the side that revolutionised white-ball cricket under Eoin Morgan and won the 2019 ODI World Cup. Since the 2023 ODI World Cup, they have won just two of their eight ODI series. Yet, there is reason for optimism. Edgbaston has become a fortress, with England winning their last 7 ODIs at the venue. For English fans, 14 July brings back memories of the 2019 World Cup triumph. 7 years on, the hosts will hope the anniversary ushers in a new chapter in their ODI journey. Building towards 2027 - Since Shubman Gill took over as ODI captain, India have endured mixed results, losing series to Australia and New Zealand, with their only series win coming against Afghanistan. However, their record in England offers plenty of encouragement. No touring side has a better win percentage in ODIs in England, and Birmingham has been India's happiest hunting ground, with more ODI wins here than at any other venue. Since the 2023 ODI World Cup, the Men in Blue also boast the second-best win percentage among Full Member nations in the format, underlining why they remain the team to beat.

Time for ODIs - The T20I series was anything but competitive, with England handing India an absolute shellacking. That saw the hosts dethrone India at the top of the T20I rankings, but the picture is very different in the 50-over format. India sit comfortably at the summit of the ODI rankings, while England are down in 8th. Let's hope that gulf in the rankings doesn't translate onto the field and that we are in for a cracking series. Let's get going in Birmingham.

Round 1 of 3 - The white-ball tour hits its final stretch with a 3-ODI series, pitching camp in Birmingham and Cardiff before the curtains come down at Lord's. After being drubbed by England 4-0 in the T20I series, this wounded Indian side will be fueled with a hunger for redemption and resurrect their white-ball dominance in the longer limited-overs format. England, by winning the T20I series, have snatched the No. 1 position from the Indians in the ICC rankings, but when it comes to the ODIs, it's India who sit atop the pile, while the hosts find themselves marooned at eighth, trailing teams like Afghanistan. With the 2027 World Cup already casting its shadow, this series becomes the opening examination for both sides, and neither will fancy stumbling out of the blocks. Different format, different picture - Since the last ODI World Cup, both teams' journeys have been pretty noteworthy. England's journey has been nothing short of underwhelming, managing just two bilateral series wins in eight since November 2023, with wins coming only against West Indies and Sri Lanka. Sandwiched in between was a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of India, suffered right on Indian soil. And at home as well, they have an okay-ish record, winning five ODIs and losing six out of eleven in the same span. India, on the other hand, don't exactly boast a screamingly dominant run either. A mixed bag of results reads four ODI series wins out of seven played since the last global event, a record that's solid without being spectacular. Those defeats include series losses to Sri Lanka and Australia, along with a historic dent to their pride when New Zealand pulled off a first-ever ODI series win on Indian soil earlier this year. But India arrive with confidence restored after their latest home outing, where they steamrolled Afghanistan in a clean sweep. Gen-Next leads the charge - Two of the game's sharpest young minds, wielding contrasting styles with the bat, will lock horns, leading their respective sides. Shubman Gill for India, Harry Brook for England. Both were handed the reins in 2025, and both now shoulder the task of steering their teams into a fresh chapter of white-ball cricket. Fittingly, both also happen to be the highest-ranked ODI batters within their own camps. What sharpens this duel further is how prolifically both have churned out runs since taking the armband. Brook has averaged a hefty 60.71 since stepping into the role, stockpiling 850 runs studded with three fifties and three hundreds. Gill, despite featuring in nearly half as many matches as his counterpart, has been every bit as ruthless, averaging 59.4 across eight innings for 416 runs. Their numbers so far in ODIs in 2026 alone are downright insane. Gill sits at an average of 93.25, with Brook not far behind at 92. Their methods with the bat couldn't be more different. Gill leans into a measured, conservative game while Brook thrives on all-out aggression, but both have found their own route to run-scoring gold. The big daddies collide - Boasting over 26,500 ODI runs between the two of them, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, arguably the most prolific pair Indian cricket has produced, return to fortify the batting order. This duo has plundered more runs on English turf than anyone else in the current squad, with the Ro-Ko pairing, now confined to this one format alone, having stacked upwards of a thousand runs apiece on these shores. Mirroring India's Ro-Ko axis, England counter with their own grizzled campaigners in the Jos-Joe combination. Root sits unrivalled as England's all-time leading run-getter in the format, while Buttler occupies third spot on that same list, having already elbowed past Ian Bell. Add to that Root's standing among the top scorers against India specifically, and this battle of the old guard promises to be every bit as fascinating as the one brewing between the new generation. Steady hands in the middle - Whereas the likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan have been the steady pillars of the Indian middle order, as their contributions have quietly held the innings together, even when the top order has hogged the headlines. Another name making a comeback into the ODI setup is Shivam Dube. Last seen in the format back in August 2024 against Sri Lanka, this recall marks his return to the 50-over fold after a gap of nearly two years. Whereas for England, that responsibility falls on the shoulders of the likes of Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Buttler himself, and the two southpaws, Bethell and Duckett. It's a group that brings its own flavour of power and versatility, with Curran and Jacks lending all-round depth, the left-handed duo of Bethell and Duckett offering a different approach. Whereas James Coles from Sussex has received his maiden ODI call-up as well. He can bat right-handed and can turn up with his left-arm orthodox spin as well. Battle of the bests with the ball- This series also marks the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who will be turning out in international colours for the first time since a lean IPL 2026, where he managed just 4 wickets. Strikingly, this will also be Bumrah's first ODI appearance since the 2023 World Cup final. Bumrah has always relished English conditions, having picked up 30 wickets in the format here, the joint most by any Indian bowler in ODIs, levelled with Ravindra Jadeja. He leads the pace attack featuring the mainstays Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh. England counter with Jofra Archer, who also returns to the ODI fold after nearly a year out of the format. He will spearhead the pace attack alongside Josh Tongue, who is set to make his ODI debut in this series. Both were part of the pace unit that obliterated India through the recent T20Is with their precision and pace. Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood provide the other frontline options, alongside Sam Curran, who has rediscovered his rhythm with the ball of late. In the spin department, the duel to watch out for will be between Adil Rashid and Kuldeep Yadav. Among full-member nations, both stand as the leading wicket-taking spinners for their respective sides since the start of 2023, Kuldeep leading the way with 75 scalps in that span, with Rashid not far behind on 73. Team form (Last 5 completed ODIs, recent first) - ENG - WWLLL | IND - WWWLL. Aiming to repeat the dose - England would be eagerly waiting to execute the same dominance they displayed in the T20Is in the longer white-ball format. But lurking beneath that confidence is an ODI record against India that's been nothing short of threadbare. They've managed just one win from their last eight face-offs and haven't tasted a single triumph over the Men in Blue since 2022. That lone victory came at Lord's, back when Jos Buttler still helmed the side. India, meanwhile, will look to preserve their own stranglehold over England, having lost just a solitary bilateral ODI series to them since 2013, a 2-1 defeat back in 2018. However, Birmingham has been something of a happy hunting ground for the hosts lately. England have won their last seven ODIs there, and will be eager to keep that streak alive.
