From a position of 161/2, Zimbabwe lost their last 8 wickets for just 66 runs in what turned out to be a dramatic collapse. Their top four batters all got starts, with Nick Welch and Sean Williams going on to register fifties, but the visitors needed much more and have fallen well short of the total they would have had in mind after winning the toss.

As for Zimbabwe, they let a bright start slip away. Having been 161/2 at one stage after winning the toss, they had a golden opportunity to take control of the Test by piling on the runs. They will now be hoping this last pair can stretch the total as much as possible. Can the pair succeed in adding a few vital runs? Let's find out.

Spin was always expected to play a key role after pacers dominated proceedings in Sylhet and so it proved, with 7 of the 9 wickets falling to the spinners. Taijul Islam led the way, claiming his 16th Test five-wicket haul to run through the Zimbabwean batting lineup. Bangladesh will be eager to take this final wicket quickly and then get on with their reply with the bat.

After losing the toss at a venue where 500 has been crossed in the first innings in each of the last two Tests, Bangladesh will be delighted with the position they find themselves in. They will aim to wrap up the Zimbabwe innings quickly on Day 2 before turning their attention to building a strong reply with the bat. Tafadzwa Tsiga has shown stiff resistance during his 59-ball stay, and from a Zimbabwean perspective, much will rest on his shoulders to stretch the total further. That proved to be just the opening Bangladesh needed, as Welch's departure brought a new batter to the crease, and the spinners quickly pounced on the opportunity. Nayeem Hasan and Taijul Islam combined brilliantly to chip away at the wickets, while a run out further compounded Zimbabwe’s troubles. Welch eventually returned at the fall of the 8th wicket but couldn’t add anything to the score and fell while trying to hit his way out of trouble.

Earlier in the day, Zimbabwe opted to bat first and made a steady start. Both Brian Bennett and Ben Curran put in the hard work, but fell to shots that could have been avoided. Sean Williams and Nick Welch then provided stability and went unscathed throughout the entire second session. The hot and humid conditions began to take a toll on Welch at the start of the third session, forcing him to retire hurt.

A remarkable turnaround by Bangladesh to claim the opening day honours! Zimbabwe began the third session in a position of strength at 161/2 but suffered a collapse of epic proportions. They lost 7 wickets for just 66 runs, leaving them to wonder what could have been after such a promising start.

This partnership is now worth 89 and Zimbabwe would hope for these two to continue the grind in the post-Tea session. There is turn on offer, but not threatening enough, and we have seen the odd ball staying low. Bangladeshi bowlers have to find some inspiration and try to break this partnership. The onus will be on their spinners till the new ball is available in the latter half of the third session. Back in a bit for the third and final session of the day.

There has been turn on offer, but the Zimbabwean batters weathered the spinners through their solid defence. In the first session, we saw Zimbabwe batters playing their shots, but in this session, they have respected the pitch and the opposition and have played the ball to its merit. In addition to that, they have also rotated the strike a fair bit, thereby rarely getting into a shell. Bangladeshi bowlers tried all they could, and there were some nervy moments for the batters here and there, but nonetheless, the batters remained untroubled.

End of session 2, and the players will feel a bit relieved as it has been very hot out there. Talking about the session, it’s been Zimbabwe all the way as they scored 72 runs in the session without losing a wicket, all thanks to Sean Williams and Nick Welch who have grinded it out in the middle. It’s not been easy by any means as the Bangladeshi spinners have been pretty much on the target, but the application shown by these two men has been commendable.

The home side would go into the break with a lot of joy, seeing how the spinners have operated in the last 1 hour or so. However, as the session progressed, the amount of turn reduced with the ball getting older and losing its hardness and that will make life easier for Zimbabwean batters in the post-Lunch session. After that, Nick Welch and Ben Curran got together and they looked largely untroubled as there was a small passage of play where Mehidy Hasan Miraz was not getting his lengths right, which allowed the two batters to score runs. Taijul Islam struck in his first over as a poor shot from Ben Curran saw his leg stump pegged back as he went back for 21. Sean Williams and Nick Welch got together to ensure that there were no more casualties in the session.

That will be the end of the first session on Day 1, as Zimbabwe are off to a decent start with the score reading 89/2. In the first hour, there was some movement on offer, as the moisture beneath the wicket helped the seamers. However, Zimbabwe were a tad lucky in that phase as there were quite a few deliveries which went past the edge of the bat, and they managed to lose just one wicket of Brian Bennett, who got out to a rash shot.

PITCH REPORT - Athar Ali Khan is near the deck. He says the wicket looks white in colour, and there is some grass but not like it was in Sylhet. Observes that there are cracks on the surface, which can be a concern later in this Test match. He believes this looks a good batting surface. Adds that there is a tinge of grass, but again, it shouldn’t be a concern over the course of this Test and as he said earlier this looks a great batting wicket. Feels that the captain winning the toss will look to bat first.

The skipper of Bangladesh, Najmul Hossain Shanto says it looks like a pretty good wicket and mentions he does not mind batting second since the surface tends to play well even on Days 3 and 4. He hopes the batters are a bit more prepared this time and can produce something special.

The captain of Zimbabwe, Craig Ervine, says the surface looks drier and has less grass compared to what it was in Sylhet. He mentions it was a massive win in the first game, but stresses the need to refocus on this Test. He adds that little moments in the game are crucial, and admits Zimbabwe missed a few opportunities in Sylhet.

As for Zimbabwe, they ended the previous day on a high and were hopeful of limiting the lead, but missed chances in the field and their inexperience, especially in the spin department, proved costly. The ever-smiling debutant leggie, Vincent Masekesa, was the standout performer, claiming a memorable five-wicket haul but the rest struggled to take wickets or contain the runs. Now, they face an uphill task. As for Zimbabwe, they looked bereft of ideas after the strong opening stand, but debutant leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa injected much-needed energy into their bowling effort. His timely breakthroughs in the third session hauled Zimbabwe back into the contest and ensured the lead didn’t spiral out of control.

Bangladesh appeared to be running away with the game across the first two sessions on Day 2, especially after bowling Zimbabwe out for 227 and then putting together a solid start with the bat. A century from opener Shadman Islam put the hosts in a strong position to build a substantial lead, but a mini-collapse in the final session stalled their charge.

Right then, the Test is nicely poised with three days left. Zimbabwe’s strong effort has kept Bangladesh from taking full control. They will aim to wrap up the innings early on Day 3 and build a solid reply. For Bangladesh, Mehidy will be key in pushing the lead towards 100. In the third session, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim took Bangladesh into the lead, but Zimbabwe fought their way back through the debutant leggie, Vincent Masekesa. Mushfiqur’s run out while going for a risky single added to Bangladesh’s troubles as they slipped dramatically after being 259/3 at one stage.

Bangladesh needed just one ball to take the last Zimbabwe wicket, bowling them out for 227, with Taijul Islam taking six wickets. In response, openers Shadman Islam and Anamul Haque had a shaky start but settled in to put on a 118-run partnership. Shadman capitalised on the conditions and went on to score a ton. Zimbabwe struggled in the second session but ended it well with two quick wickets.

SESSION SUMMARY - 30 overs, 86 runs and 4 wickets. There’s something about the third session where the serenity of the day gives way to sudden drama. On Day 1, it was Bangladesh who came storming back, but on Day 2, it was Zimbabwe who turned the tide with a spirited fightback and will head into stumps as the slightly happier side. Yes, Bangladesh will be disappointed with the collapse, but they have managed to stretch their lead to 64 runs. Still, they will walk back to the dressing room, wondering what could have been after such a solid platform earlier in the day.

For the visitors, well, they will draw some inspiration from the last session yesterday, where suddenly things started happening, and in total, 7 wickets fell in the third session yesterday. The two wickets late in the second session will ensure that the visitors stay in good stead.
