We are finally back with India's reply! The umpires make their way out to the middle and Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul follow them. The Australians burst out of their huddle after a long chat and spread to take the field. Mitchell Starc to start the proceedings with the brand new ball and it will be Starc to Jaiswal first up! UPDATE - 1.17 am GMT (6.47 am IST) - The covers are coming off and we are inching closer to resumption. Play will resume at 1.30 am GMT (7 am IST). The sun has made an appearance as Mitchell Starc and Co. go through their warm-up drills. Yashasvi Jaiswal is waiting on the sidelines but we are yet to spot his opening partner. Oh, here he is, KL Rahul, standing near the ropes.
UPDATE - 1.12 am GMT (6.42 am IST) - The heavens have opened up once again with a heavy downpour, and the ground staff are quickly covering the playing area. However, just like in the previous rain interruption, the rain has already eased. The square remains covered for now as we await the next steps. Pat Cummins and his fellow pacers are already out there, going through their paces, so, we are not far away from a resumption.
As for India, Jasprit Bumrah led the way with the ball with figures of 28-9-76-6. The Aussie pacers will relish the opportunity to bowl with the new ball in these conditions. The hardness of the ball combined with the overcast sky and the moisture in the air gives them a real advantage, making it tough for the Indian batters to score freely. Looking at the radar for the rest of the day, the stop-start nature of the play due to rain delays won't help the batting side either, as it disrupts the rhythm and makes it even more challenging to settle in. Back in a bit for India's reply.
Two wickets in quick succession bring an end to Australia's innings! They added 40 runs to their overnight score of 405 to finish with 445 in their first innings. The Aussies will be pleased with what they got on the board after having lost the toss and being inserted into bat under testing overhead conditions on the opening day. As play resumed on Day 2, the hosts found themselves 75/3 inside the first session but then came the dominant 241-run stand between Travis Head and Steven Smith with centuries along the way for both batters. After a brief period of success with the second new ball for the tourists, Alex Carey extended the advantage for the batting side and took them past 400 with contributions from Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.

Day 2 was firmly in Australia's favour, with brilliant centuries from Travis Head and Steven Smith taking center stage. After a shaky start that saw the hosts lose their top order in the first session, the Australian batters asserted their dominance, finishing the day with an imposing total of 405. Jasprit Bumrah shone yet again for India, picking up a well-deserved five-wicket haul, while Akash Deep toiled hard but remained unlucky to go wicketless.

Having slipped from 316/3 to 327/6, Alex Carey and Pat Cummins combined to halt the slide and added crucial runs to pile further misery on the Indian bowlers. Cummins couldn't see the day through but Carey held the fort, remaining unbeaten on 45. For India, Jasprit Bumrah once again led the charge with his 12th Test five-wicket haul. Akash Deep ended the day wicketless, though he went past the bat on several occasions, and Mohammed Siraj appeared out of sorts due to a left hamstring issue, adding to India's frustration on the field.
Travis Head, however, picked up where he left off in Adelaide and quickly found his rhythm. Once he got his eye in, Head began to unleash, and his presence at the other end allowed Smith to settle. Smith, who had been scratchy early on, grew in confidence and, following his half-century, began to find his stride. From 75/3, Smith and Head stitched a crucial 241-run partnership, both bringing up centuries and putting Australia in a dominant position. After looking listless following the Tea break with the old ball, the arrival of the second new ball sparked some success through Bumrah.
SESSION SUMMARY - 31 overs, 171 runs, and 4 wickets. A day of Aussie dominance! The day started promisingly for India, as they managed to nip out the Australian top order in the first session. However, the following sessions saw centuries from Travis Head and Steven Smith, which took the wind out of India's sails and put the hosts in a position of strength. After being inconsistent with their lines and lengths on the rain-marred opening day, Jasprit Bumrah led the course correction for the visitors on the second morning, striking early to dismiss both Australian openers. Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne then combined to weather the storm, but just as their partnership was starting to flourish, Labuschagne departed.

Head's presence at the other end eased the pressure on Smith, who was far from his fluent best. The southpaw soon brought up his 9th Test century and Smith, feeding off the momentum, also reached his half-century. India desperately needed someone to hold one end and apply sustained pressure, but that effort never materialized. With 10 overs remaining until the second new ball, it will be crucial for the tourists to keep things tight until then. Back in a bit for the third and final session of the day.
End of a dominant session for Australia, as they added 130 runs in 27 overs without losing a wicket. While the first session saw runs being scored at a modest 2.56 runs per over, the second session witnessed a sharp uptick with a run rate of 4.81 runs per over. India were made to toil hard, particularly by their recent nemesis, Travis Head. The session started nervously for Steven Smith, as Akash Deep repeatedly beat his outside edge during a probing spell. However, Smith managed to weather the storm and hold his ground. At the other end, Head kept the scoreboard ticking and as he began to cut loose, India were left scratching their heads for solutions.

Both Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith endured nervy starts to their innings, surviving close calls and beating edges. However, as the session progressed, the duo began to find their footing, gradually growing in confidence. After choosing to bowl first, India struggled to capitalize on the favourable overhead conditions. The bowlers lacked consistency in their lines and lengths allowing the Australian openers to settle in. With minimal movement off the pitch, the visitors rarely forced the batters into making errors. Raunak Kapoor reports that the match officials were out on the field a short while ago, discussing the conditions with the ground staff. They are now near the tunnel, with Richard Kettleborough seen chatting with Nathan Lyon, while the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir is also present.
UPDATE - 5.06 am GMT (10.36 am IST) - TEA has been taken on Day 1 and it does bring some positive news. The rain has significantly reduced in intensity, but it needs to stop entirely for the ground staff to start the mop-up operation. Here's hoping for better conditions after the break so we can get some action underway in the final session of the day.

With every passing minute, the chances of resuming play on Day 1 seem to be slipping away. That said, the excellent drainage system at this venue keeps a glimmer of hope alive. The forecast hints at an impending break in the weather, which could pave the way for a brief resumption. However, fading light might also become a challenge. The radar suggests that heavier rain could be heading towards The Gabba, which likely means any hopes of further play today could be dashed. Meanwhile, over in Hamilton, after a wicketless first session, England have managed to trigger a collapse, with New Zealand slipping from 172/2 to 212/6.

The outfield doesn't appear as wet as it did earlier, with live visuals showing some improvement. Raunak Kapoor mentions that there was a brief 10-minute break in the rain, which seems to have allowed the outfield to recover somewhat. Fingers crossed that the rain subsides soon.
UPDATE - 3 am GMT (8.30 am IST) - In an ideal world, we would have the second session starting now, but the rain continues to fall heavily and persistently at The Gabba. The outfield has taken a real beating with puddles formed all around the outfield. Mark Nicholas reckons that any more play today seems unlikely and informs that the roads adjoining the stadium are flooded. Even with the excellent drainage system in place, it looks like we are in for a long delay before we can resume play, that is, if the rain stops soon.
The forecast indicates that the weather should improve as the day progresses, so let’s hope for better playing conditions after the Lunch break. In this case, the Indian seamers were just beginning to find their rhythm, troubling both Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney with a few close calls.
