Travis Head made the most out of it and smashed a big hundred scoring 140 runs which is currently the difference between the two sides. Earlier it was Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne who got through some testing spells under lights and in the morning, but steadied the ship nicely. Marnus answered his critics with a fighting half-century while there were some valuable contributions from Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins down the order to take the lead of Australia to 157 runs. Their bowlers will be brimming with confidence, especially bowling under lights and India will need to bat their skins out to stay in this contest. Join us in a bit for the second essay.
After getting booed in the final stages of the second session, Mohammed Siraj came back in to wrap up the Australian innings quickly. His send-off to local hero, Travis Head did not go well with the crowd but credit to him for battling it out in the middle and ending up with 4 wickets. Jasprit Bumrah was at his usual best again and picked up four as well while Ravichandran Ashwin and Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with one each. It was not easy for the visitors, and dropping a few chances did not help them either, with the most costly being Siraj dropping Head.

... DAY 2, SESSION 3 ...
India had a tough grind in this session. Jasprit Bumrah bowled sparingly, battling cramps, while Ravichandran Ashwin was outstanding with the ball, maintaining a tight leash on the scoring. However, Harshit Rana's lack of experience allowed Head to launch a counter-attack. Mohammed Siraj toiled tirelessly and was rewarded, dismissing Alex Carey before claiming the prized wicket of Travis Head. The second new ball brought success right at the end, with Bumrah removing the opposition skipper on the final delivery of the session. Travis Head set the tone early, finding the boundary consistently and keeping the scoreboard ticking. However, wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Mitchell Marsh walked back after edging one he didn’t touch, surprisingly choosing not to review. Alex Carey then joined Head, and the pair stitched together a brisk 72-run partnership, stretching the lead further and taking the game away from the visitors. Head, in scintillating form, smashed his way to a century at his favorite venue against a favored opponent. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins chipped in with some powerful strokes, but the skipper fell just before the Dinner break.
With that wicket, the umpires have called for DINNER ON DAY 2! Another session that belonged to Australia, but India had a few positives to take from it as well! Despite losing wickets, the Aussies have strengthened their grip on this game courtesy of a destructive 140 from Travis Head. For India, the other bowlers did step up to support Jasprit Bumrah, but they have conceded a big lead of 152 runs with still two wickets left for the hosts.

Travis Head is a bit late to bring his bat down to squeeze it out and the ball just crashes into the sticks in a flash. Siraj is all pumped up and there's also some heated exchange of words between Siraj and Head. Head walks back to the pavilion but soaks in all the admiration from the crowd at the Adelaide Oval. Now, Australia, with the lead at their helm aims to extend it and take the game away from India's reach as they still have six wickets to spare. While India's first aim would be to dent into this partnership and create inroads as quickly as possible as Australia still doesn't have a broad lead. But for that, over-reliance on Bumrah won't work, all the bowlers will have to bring their A-game in the second session, which is known as a perfect time to bat on. India's bowling attack lost its edge once Bumrah was rotated out. Though Siraj maintained intensity through an extended spell and created occasional chances, a breakthrough proved elusive. The inexperience of Harshit Rana was exposed as he leaked runs consistently, failing to find his rhythm. Meanwhile, Ashwin's threat was neutralized by careful batting on a surface yet to offer significant turn. But just when this Head-Labuschagne alliance was looking more threatening, Nitish Reddy was brought into the attack and broke through this 65-run stand for the fourth wicket. Head though continued on his merry way against his favorite opposition and notched up a fifty in no real time.
India began right on the money with Siraj and Bumrah bowling in tandem. The two pacers interrogated the Aussie overnight batters with some tight lines and lengths. They mixed their lines and lengths well and didn't allow the runs to flow freely in the initial hour. It was Bumrah who ended the resistance of McSweeney and also removed Smith in a quick interval of time. Australia's early struggles gave way to a momentum shift as Travis Head joined the resolute Labuschagne at the crease. Head's arrival injected fresh dynamism into the innings, as he took on the bowling with characteristic aggression. The pair found gaps with regularity, peppering the boundary, and rapidly ate into the deficit.
TEA, DAY 2 - Session Summary - 26 overs, 105 runs, 3 wickets. An entertaining session to be very fair. The first hour belonged to India but the next hour was bossed by the Aussie batters. PITCH REPORT - Sunil Gavaskar and Matthew Hayden are inspecting the Day 2 Adelaide surface. Gavaskar says there's a fair bit of grass and the Indian bowlers will aim to take the benefit of the breeze as well. Also adds that Australia has used the roller and its effect would be there for almost an hour or so. Hayden joins him and says that it has still got a lot of live grass and it is a bit spongy and has also started to crack a little bit. Mentions that there's a bit of dust as well and the moisture has just gone away due to the heat. Informs that the conditions are pleasant for both batting and bowling. He further adds that the seamers will have to stay patient and stick to their lines and lengths. Gavaskar says that the bowlers should make the batters play as much as they can and aim at the stumps to get the results.
India, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their batting performance, as the conditions didn’t justify being bowled out for 180. Shubman Gill and KL Rahul showed promise early on, but yet another collapse saw them lose three wickets in just four overs before Tea, completely shifting the momentum. The silver lining was Nitish Kumar Reddy, whose brisk 42 highlighted his growing reliability as an all-rounder. With the ball, the pace attack worked tirelessly and posed a few challenges, but it was the birthday boy, Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed the only Australian wicket. India will look to come out with renewed energy and strike early, but with the pitch improving for batting, the hosts will aim to bat India out of the game. Australia were put into bowl but couldn’t have asked for a better start, with Mitchell Starc striking on the very first ball. He was in sensational form, delivering every time his skipper called on him. Proving once again why he’s the most successful bowler with the Pink Ball, Starc recorded his career-best Test figures of 6/48. The batters then built on the bowlers’ efforts, with Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne navigating some testing spells under the lights. By the end of the day, Australia had closed the deficit to just 94 runs, losing only one wicket in the process.

Though a forgettable day for India, the stand between Gill and Rahul, debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy's gutsy innings, and Bumrah's lone strike offered slim consolation. The stage is now set for Day 2 with Australia eyeing a commanding lead while India desperately needs early breakthroughs to stay in the hunt. The seamers kept finding subtle movement through the air, just enough to whisper past the bat's edge, but their line strayed frequently outside off-stump. This allowed the Australian batters to comfortably let deliveries pass harmlessly. India's pace attack, with Bumrah out of the attack, perhaps missed a trick by not targeting the stumps more frequently. It allowed Marnus and McSweeney to work hard and settle in nicely. The two grew in confidence gradually and formed a solid 62-run stand to see through the day.
Australia could have effectively been a wicket down early, had Pant not grassed the catch behind the wickets. Despite this let-off, the Indian pacers maintained their disciplined attack, generating significant movement to trouble both batters and create chances. Though McSweeney's inexperience was evident in his tentative approach, he managed to survive the testing first hour against the new ball. However, despite all the hard work, Usman Khawaja failed to hang on against Bumrah and that was the solitary loss to the Australian batting order.
The final session began under the lights with Australia taking the crack with the bat. With the new ball doing just enough to beat the edges constantly. Pace duo of Bumrah and Siraj launched a questioning opening spell that kept both Australian openers on their toes. Nathan McSweeney appeared particularly unsettled, displaying visible signs of nerves at the crease. Meanwhile, Khawaja adopted a more measured approach, working the ball around for singles while carefully navigating the threatening new ball.

The man of the moment, Mitchell Starc is up for a quick chat. He says that the ball was coming out nicely from his hand in this game. Adds that they did not do much wrong in Perth but India played better. Mentions that the pitch is a good one, the ball is moving away and they just wanted to keep the momentum going. Says that as a bowling unit, they need to be patient as there will be some rough patches that you need to get through. Australia will be pleased with their bowling performance but will know they missed an opportunity to do even better. Mitchell Starc set the tone with a stunning first-ball wicket, but the team couldn’t fully capitalize, dropping a few chances along the way. It was Starc again who broke through just before Tea and claimed the prized wicket of Virat Kohli, finishing as the standout performer with his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests against India. Scott Boland and Pat Cummins provided solid support, picking up key wickets, but Nitish Kumar Reddy counter-attacked brilliantly, adding crucial runs in the lower order to keep India in the game. Every time, skipper Cummins turned to Starc, he got the wickets and fittingly wrapped things up as well with a six-fer.
India had a nightmare start as Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed off the very first ball of the Test match. However, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul weathered the storm early on, countering the fiery spells and stitching together a crucial 50-run partnership. Just when it seemed like India had wrestled back control, both set batters and Virat Kohli fell in quick succession, losing three wickets in the space of four overs. The decision to have Rohit Sharma bat at number 6 didn’t pay off, but Rishabh Pant and Ravichandran Ashwin added vital runs in the middle order. In the midst of the chaos, young sensation Nitish Kumar Reddy once again showcased his class, blending aggression with solid defense to keep India afloat with a breezy 42 off 54.
Australia have wrapped up the Indian innings right on the stroke of Dinner! An outstanding performance with the ball from the hosts and they would have taken this total at the start of the game. Welcome back for the second session! It is still very overcast out there, but there's no rain around, fortunately. The Australian players take the field and spread out to their respective positions. UPDATE - 6.41 am GMT - There was some rain lurking around in Adelaide and the hessian covers were brought in near the pitch during the break. But, as per Mark Nicholas on-air, the covers are going off now, which is good news and we will have the resumption pretty soon.
Well then, the first session of this Day-Night Test has flown by. While there's been consistent variable bounce which has indeed troubled the batters, the initial lateral movement has notably waned away. All eyes now turn to the post-Tea session, where the artificial lights could add another dimension to the contest. The crucial question is, will the evening conditions aid Australia's bowlers with more swing, or will India's batters build a substantial partnership? Join us back with all the action in a bit. It resumes at 6.40 am GMT.
KL Rahul lived on an edge and got a reprieve twice into his innings. He rode his luck through two significant escapes - first when Scott Boland seemed to have him caught behind only for the delivery to be called a No-Ball, and then when Usman Khawaja failed to hold onto an easy chance in the slips. On the back of these lifelines, KL Rahul was just about getting into the groove. But it was the return of Mitchell Starc that finally broke through and dented the Indian batting order. Dismissing Rahul's resistance first, and also getting the better of Virat Kohli, just a few minutes before the break. And with the well-settled Gill too, dismissed, it reduced India from a comfortable 69/1 to a worrisome 81/4. Slight adjustments in line by the Aussie bowlers garnered them more success as they brought the angle closer to the stumps.
India elected to bat first on an overcast afternoon. Mitchell Starc just provided the best of starts for Australia as he sent the in-form Jaiswal packing on the very first ball of the match. Cummins too, interrogated the batters with some exceptional lines and lengths early on. The ball, however, abruptly lost that lateral movement within the first thirty minutes, and the batters found it a bit easy to play their strokes, with the only odd one deviating and bouncing a tad bit. Gill treated the crowd with some eye-catching drives while KL Rahul was very tentative in his approach from the outset.
TEA, DAY 1 - Session Summary - 23 overs, 82 runs, 4 wickets. 16 balls! That is what it took for the fortunes to flip over towards the hosts as they struck three wickets in that little phase. A breathless first session of play at Adelaide, to say the least. It had everything, the ball going past the edges on several occasions, some exquisite shots, a dropped catch as well. But overall, it was a dominant session for Australia as they managed to go through the Indian top order within the first session.
