England
Now then! Australia will have to bat really well. They would know anything in excess of 200 would be very challenging on this wicket. For that though, they would need all their batters to do their part. England on the other hand, are probably a bowler short, they though have a 90-run cushion. Their first aim will be to get a few wickets before Australia cross 90 and then never let the pressure release. Seeing how Lyon bowled, a lot will be expected of Moeen Ali. The last session is a very important one and it could probably decide which way this game turns. Do join us in a while for it.
The Australian bowlers were really good throughout. They were disciplined and hit the right lines and lengths on consistent basis. However, they did not have a lot of luck on their side. Still, all their front line bowlers managed to take wickets. Pattinson was probably the one who impressed the most. Cummins was not brilliant throughout but did get into his own as the game progressed. Lyon also finished with a three-fer, he too was very good. Siddle also had a good time with the ball, he kept it tight and also took two. The scoreboard does show England scored close to 400 but overall it was a good bowling performance by Australia.
The star of the England innings was Burns who notched up his first ton in his first ever Ashes game. Yes, you could say a couple of English batters were lucky but take nothing away from the way they played. Burns was well-supported by Root and Stokes, both scored fifties. However, England had a real good chance to bat Australia out of the game but a collapse this morning saw Australia crawl back into the game. Handy innings though from Broad and Woakes sees England as favorites at the moment.
Finally, finally, the Australian's have managed to bundle the England batting line-up out. However, the last two wickets have batted for almost one and a half session and added 74 runs which could be very crucial. England, courtesy Woakes and Broad have dragged their lead to 90 which gives them the edge in the game at the moment.

As for Australia's bowling, Lyon was the pick of the bowlers in this session as he scalped two. Yesterday's star bowler, Pattinson, was the only bowler out of the four used today who did not manage to pick one. The visitors though would be disappointed not to bundle out England in the first session. Now the hosts will be looking to take this lead closer to 100 or more whereas Australia will look to get rid of the tail as quickly as possible. What will happen? Another battling session in this Test. The Aussies started the day on the front foot as they got rid of Ben Stokes early after he got to his fifty, breaking the 88-run stand. Then centurion, Burns and Moeen Ali departed in the same over of Lyon. Bairstow did not last long either. It looked like the hosts would struggle to bat the first session but Woakes and Broad had other ideas. The duo fought out and made sure England managed to bat the whole session, adding 28 runs in the process taking the lead to 44.

A tired day for the Kangaroos. They hopped and made the batsmen hop as well but could not celebrate much. Pattinson was by far the best of the bowlers but he could not get much luck. Nathan Lyon got some turn and that might excite Moeen Ali when he comes on to bowl in the second dig.
Root's dismissal gave Australia some hope. But Denly came in and had a bit of a stand with Burns. Then, the ball was changed, owing to loss of shape and suddenly, England became 194/4 from 189/2. Collapse on the cards? Sorry to disappoint Aussie fans but that period of 10 minutes looked like an oasis to a tired, thirsty pilgrim in the desert. Australia searched and hunted desperately to break through that middle order just like a thirsty man hunts for water in a desert but it never came as Stokes gave solid support to Rory to stitch an unbeaten 73-run stand.
A good day for England means that they are almost close to dominating this game. They did not start Friday that well, losing Roy cheaply but that was about it. Skipper Root and Burns survived some superb but luckless fast bowling from Australia as the ball took the edge and went everywhere but to hand. Their 132-run stand frustrated Australia and that made it pretty much easy for the batsmen afterwards to blunt the already tired attack.
Take a bow, Rory Burns. He has batted the whole day and kept Australia at bay, not allowing them to get into the middle order. For a man whose position in the team was questioned, he has certainly answered in fine style.

BREAKING NEWS - Meanwhile, fresh news comes out from the English camp. Mark Wood has been ruled out for the rest of the Ashes and will not be able to participate at all, as he continues to recover from a left knee injury.
The Australian bowlers were very good! Especially Pattinson, who was a delight to watch. However, Cummins was not at his best and Lyon, who got a lot of purchase off the surface also did not bowl the way he would on such a wicket. There is still a long time to go in the game though and Australia will dearly hope they have luck on their side in the next session and probably get a few English wickets. Join us for the second session which is probably a very important one.
The session started with Australia getting Roy early. Root and Burns then rode their luck and hung in there. The former was knocked over but the bails did not come off and Australia missed a chance of a review against the latter. They are amidst a 49-run stand and England would hope the two continue.
A very, very good session of Test cricket is what we just witnessed! Some disciplined bowling and very good batting too from the English side. Yes, they did have luck on their side but take nothing away from the way they have battled in conditions where there is some assistance for the bowlers. You can probably say the game is probably in the balance but England can be termed as the happier side, albeit by just at the moment.

How do England look at this pitch? How do supporters look at this track? When the visitors were crumbling at 122/8, it looked like there is plenty on the pitch for the seamers. But then, looking at the way Siddle and Lyon played, it gives plenty of confidence to the hosts' batsmen. What exactly is there in the pitch then? Actually, not much. It was swing which got the better of OZ and they would need exactly that to stop England. Overcast conditions did not help them either. Conditions today are bright and sunny, so that could mean extra work for the Aussie bowlers.

First, it was Broad, who ran through the fragile Aussie batting line-up, to finish with a 5-for and get into the list of bowlers with 100 Ashes wickets. Then, there was Woakes, who just strut his stuff with the Dukes ball. But the man who was missed the most. His 4 overs were the only output for England and his absence, can be argued, allowed the Aussies to recover.

Excellent bowling by England after being asked to bowl. At the toss, they would definitely take a score less than 300 but the fact that they had their opponents on the mat will hurt them. Anderson's absence hurt them a lot and they will now look to bat well to give Jimmy some extra rest.
Nothing much to talk about the Australian batting. The first two sessions were all about Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes, sharing 7 of the 8 wickets to fall. The ball was moving around and on a pitch which was not offering too much, swing did the Aussies in. Then suddenly, swing disappeared and runs started to flow.
P-H-E-N-O-M-E-N-A-L. What an opening day of the Ashes. Australia rocked hard at 122/8. Then, when even 150 looked difficult, Smith hung in there, adding 162 for the final two wickets. Australia should have been stopped under 150. They have managed almost 300.

Over-rate. The only problem in terms of excitement in this day so far. 37 overs are left, with 2 set to be cut for innings break, but still, we shall have a long and extended final session. There was some rain falling towards the end of the previous one, so fingers crossed.
Anderson out of the first innings at least with a strain in his right calf. Problems? Says who? Naah... not for 'THIS' England unit. What looked to be a tough bowling phase was converted into a wonderful passage by Woakes and Broad who got the Dukes ball to talk. Both are in touching distance of a 5-fer, though only one can get there.
What a difference it makes to a game of cricket if the ball starts to swing. When Head and Smith were batting post the early barrage of wickets, the cherry had stopped moving and runs were coming freely. But after Lunch, England found movement and rocked Australia hard. None of the batsmen could adjust to the conditions and were found wanting in terms of technique as the visitors slipped from 99/3 to 122/8. That manic period might just cost them the game.

The English players go up in appeal along with the crowd and Aleem Dar raises his finger. Warner does not wait and keeps walking. But hold on, it is the Ashes and we have started with drama as Hawk Eye later on shows that the ball was going to miss the leg stump. He survived a knick earlier but this time luck goes against him.
