At least one approved lab, Mumbai-headquartered Thyrocare, has decided to put on hold its COVID-19 testing until it receives further clarity on the situation. The firm said it had so far collected 2,000 samples.
Coronavirus (COVID-19): "In this large country, we will need state wise or preferably even district wise assessments, as the calendar of the epidemic and its control will vary across the country. I will look at the number of new cases per day as a fraction of the number of lab and clinical assessments performed that day, using comparable criteria for case definition," said Professor K Srinath Reddy.
In a detailed interview to The Indian Express in which he explained a range of issues from testing to India’s relatively low numbers, Dr Guleria was asked what his advice would be to the government on the next steps.
As per the guidelines on clinical management of COVID-19 issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, patients with mild symptoms, “may not” require hospitalisation “unless there is a concern for rapid deterioration”.
