Since the first death, 34 deaths and 298 cases have been reported in Pune. “I lost my husband to this infection, which is part of a natural calamity that is still taking so many lives. But if we want to break this chain of transmission, we have to be really alert as this is going to be around for a long time,” says the woman.
The structure of a new 11-storey extension building at the Sassoon General Hospital in Pune had been completed a few years ago, but all the ancillary works, purchase of medical equipment, and other infrastructural works like power connection remained pending.
Till now, Sassoon General Hospital has reported 21 deaths while two deaths have been registered at Noble Hospital, and one each at Aundh District Hospital, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Naidu Hospital, Inamdar Hospital, Sahyadri Hospital at Karve Road and Jehangir Hospital.
Initially, four members of the family had tested positive on March 23 after they returned from Haj in Saudi Arabia. “They were kept in the isolation ward at the government medical college on March 19,” said district civil surgeon Dr Sanjay Salunke
Cloth masks reduce the risk of transmission by 50 per cent and surgical masks by 80 per cent, according to Dr Salvi. In a review on different types of masks, he said masks are meant more to prevent transmission than protection in the community.
Of the 18 deaths, 11 were at Sassoon General Hospital, one each at Aundh District Hospital, Naidu Hospital, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Inamdar Hospital and Sahyadri Specialty Hospital, and two at Noble Hospital.
More than 100 persons with the virus have been hospitalised, with a majority of them at Naidu and Sassoon General Hospitals. Among private hospitals, KEM Hospital has five COVID-19 patients, followed by four at Jehangir Hospital.
A team of health workers will check if any of the surveyed persons has co-morbidities like diabetes and hypertension, if they had contact with an infected patient, and take details of their travel history.
Even as the Maharashtra government has demanded 3.25 lakh PPE kits, among other equipment, from the Centre, scientists in Pune have urged the government to involve them to fast-track the procurement process.
The team of health workers will conduct a door to door survey and also check if any person has co-morbidities like diabetes and hypertension, apart from travel history and contact with COVID-19 positive persons.
