The second day of the first Ashes Test between England and Australia started with Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali resuming their batting duties. The duo battled the early onslaught from Aussie seamers with the new ball, and continued to build up a partnership. Malan went on to score his first Test fifty. The duo added a total of 83 runs on the board together and the first session of the day remained in England's favour.
It took a short ball from Mitchell Starc to get Dawid Malan shortly after reaching his fifty. A top edge took the ball straight to Shaun Marsh who made no mistake at deep square.
Dawid Malan's fall prompted a sort-of-collapse for the visitors as two wickets in quick succession followed soon. Chris Woakes was clean bowled by a lovely delivery from Nathan Lyon, who got his second victim of the Test.
The tail tried to chip in with runs with Stuart Broad scoring handy 20 runs. His resistance was ended by a Josh Hazlewood as England's 1st innings ended at 302.
Much like England, Australia also saw an early breakthrough in their first innings with Cameron Bancroft becoming a victim to a Stuart Broad delivery. He went back to the pavilion adding just 5 runs to the total.
The dangerous David Warner tried to stabilise innings with Usman Khawaja, but the duo could not hold on for much longer. Khawaja was adjudged on a fuller delivery by Moeen Ali while Warner became a victim to seamer Jake Ball.
Losing Peter Handscomb soon after left Australia reeling at 76-4. Skipper Steve Smith took the responsibility on himself and went on to build a strong partnership with Shaun Marsh. Smith scored his 22nd Test fifty.
Steve Smith and Shaun Marsh added a total of 89 runs on the board for Aussies and the home side ended the day at 165/4.
