Thousands pay last respects to NSG officer Lt Col Niranjan Kumar

Thousands paid their last respects to NSG officer Lt Col Niranjan Kumar in Bengaluru on Monday (January 4) morning. Niranjan, head of the elite bomb squad of the NSG, was killed while defusing an IED at Pathankot IAF base, on Sunday. He was among seven security personnel killed in the terrorist attack there.

Niranjan Kumar's body was flown from Bangalore to this village in Palakkad on Monday (January 4) evening.

Thousands of people have been paying their last respects to the Lt Col since Monday evening at his uncle’s house and later at a local school ground. They filed past the body of the brave officer, raising slogans and paying floral tributes.

Although he lived in Bangalore, Niranjan kept the native village close to his heart. In 2013, his marriage was held at the village. He used to take part in local temple festivals and family functions without failure.

Local people recalled that Niranjan had promised to visit his grand mother Padmavathiyamma, who lives with her youngest son, in November. But he never did.(Source: PTI)

Thirty two-year-old Niranjan, who has his family in Bangalore, was commissioned in the Engineers Regiment of the Army in 2004.

Lt Col Niranjan was killed following a terrorist attack on the Pathankot IAF base.

Niranjan Kumar hailed from Palakkad in Kerala and is survived by his wife Dr Radhika and a 18-month-old daughter.
