This was the first day of the 12-day ‘Godavari Pushkaralu’ in Andhra Pradesh, July 14. Among the dead were 13 women, a 10-year-old boy, and the rest were elderly men. The stampede occurred when authorities opened the gates at Kotigummam bathing ghat and pilgrims started pushing each other in a bid to reach the river bank first. Some women and children standing in front of the queues fell down while going down the steps on the banks of Godavari river.
