Protesters clash with police in Imphal

Clashes erupted between agitators and police in Greater Imphal area on Sunday (July 12) as the supporters of Inner Line Permit continued their defiance of the curfew and took to the streets in large numbers.

Police said the forces burst teargas shells to control the agitators, who in turn used slingshots and catapults on them.

Both sides sustained minor injuries.

Protest rallies defying the curfew were organised during the day across Imphal West district including at Iroisemba, Kwakeithel, Sagolband, Heirangoi Thong, Langjing Achouba and at Khundrakpam, Sekta, Keibi, Taret Khul, Sawombung, Chingarel, Lamlai, Khurai, Soibam Leikai, Nongmeibung, Chanam Sandrok, Langdum, Kongba Uchekon in Imphal East district, police said.

Opposition parties in the state have lent their support to Inner Line Permit demand and have demanded the resignation of the Okram Ibobi Singh.
