Familiar things you didn’t know had actual names

We see them, use them, and ignore them, but many everyday objects and tiny details actually have official names. Once you know them, you’ll start noticing them everywhere.

Aglet: The plastic or metal tip at the end of your shoelaces is called an Aglet. It prevents fraying and helps you lace your shoes easily.

Ferrule: The metal band that connects the eraser to a pencil is called a Ferrule, it keeps the eraser firmly in place.

Philtrum: That groove between your nose and upper lip is called the Philtrum.

Punt: The indentation at the bottom of wine bottles is known as a Punt. It adds strength and helps with stability.

Tittle: The tiny dot above lowercase “i” and “j” is called a Tittle.

Watch Pocket: That tiny pocket inside your jeans is known as a Watch Pocket. It was originally made to hold pocket watches in the 19th century.
