The day was founded in 2009 by Rachel Crandall, a US-based transgender activist, to raise awareness. The first International Transgender Day of Visibility was held on March 31, 2009. (Express photo by Shashi Ghosh)
With this day, Crandall wanted to highlight the fact that the only transgender-centric day that is internationally recognised is Transgender Day of Remembrance, which mourned the murders of transgender people. However, it did not acknowledge and celebrate living members of the community. (Express photo by Shashi Ghosh)

In a proclamation on Trangender Day of Visibility, 2022, US President Joe Biden said, "We celebrate the activism and determination that have fueled the fight for transgender equality. We acknowledge the adversity and discrimination that the transgender community continues to face across our Nation and around the world." (Express photo by Shashi Ghosh)
"Despite this progress, transgender Americans continue to face discrimination, harassment, and barriers to opportunity. Transgender women and girls — especially transgender women and girls of color — continue to face epidemic levels of violence, and 2021 marked the deadliest year on record for transgender Americans, Biden, the first American president to issue a formal presidential proclamation recognising the day in 2021, added.
