“Taking the Peak Tram just now reminds me of my childhood memories,” a passenger Cedric Yu said while remembering how he had not ridden the tram for years. According to him, it is a collective memory for the people of Hong Kong and also the part of city’s history. (Source: AP)

In 1888, when Hong Kong was a British colony, The Peak Tram started operations to transport people up Victoria Peak instead of using sedan chairs. At that time, the original carriages were made of varnished timber which could make 30 passengers seated in three classes. (Source: AP)

“The Peak Tram has evolved and transformed itself from an essential mode of transport to a very popular tourist attraction in Hong Kong,” May Tsang, general manager of Hong Kong Peak Tramways said, reported AP. Currently, the fifth-generation Peak Tram is used which has a burgundy exterior and varnished wood interiors. It began running in 1989 and can carry 120 passengers. (Source: AP)

She added that the company will be investing over 700 million Hong Kong dollars ($90 million) to upgrade the system, the tram cars and also to renovate the terminus. (Source: AP)

The capacity will be boosted from 120 passengers to 210 with longer trans cars. “ The makeover is welcome.” Alan Cheung, a former president of the Hong Kong Collectors Society and a Peak Tram enthusiast said. (Source: AP)
