A glimpse into ‘Elephant Parade India’ for Mumbai’s public art exhibition

After the public art exhibitions, the elephants will be auctioned to raise funds to help secure 101 Elephant Corridors across India for the endangered Asian elephant.

In the wake of extinguishing Asian elephants, Elephant Parade exhibition is all set to brighten up the streets of Mumbai. The city will see 101 fibre-glass elephants in the public art exhibitions. Organised by Elephant Family, Elephant Parade India is an awareness-raising campaign aimed at drawing attention to the plight of the endangered Asian elephant whose numbers have fallen by 90% in the last 100 years.

Fashion designer Anita Dongre had her first encounter with an Asian elephant when she was a child. This childhood memory reminds her of how elephants were being used to ferry people that day, and how she wished they were left in their natural habitat. Artist Kalyan Joshi created this phenomenal elephant, Gopi, using a Rajasthani folk art form - phad. More than 700 years old, phad painting is uniquely intricate, teeming with energy and crowded with narrative.
