With social media and beauty influencers promoting fuller lips, many women try different tricks at home to get a plumper look. One popular DIY method is rubbing green chilly on the lips. But experts urge that "this concerning and alarming trend" needs to be addressed. (Photo: Pixabay)

"The idea is that chilly causes a tingling or burning sensation, which makes the lips swell temporarily and appear fuller. While it may give quick results, it is not at all safe," said Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist, Dr Shareefa Skin Care Clinic, Mumbai. (Photo: Freepik)

Using chilli on your lips can cause more harm than good. "Chilli is loaded with capsaicin, a compound that tends to irritate the skin and mucous membranes. When applied to the lips, it can lead to intense burning, redness, peeling, and even blistering. People with sensitive skin may develop allergic reactions, rashes, or long-term pigmentation," said Dr Chause. (Photo: Getty Images/Thinkstock)

It is necessary to discourage people from using such ingredients on delicate areas like the lips. "What might seem like a harmless beauty hack can end up damaging your lips permanently or leading to painful inflammation and rashes. So, don’t try these unverified DIY tips at home," said Dr Chause. Acccording to Dr Chause, there are safe, medically-approved lip enhancement options like hyaluronic acid fillers that offer natural-looking results with precision and safety. (Photo: Freepik)

"These procedures are done in a clinical setting and under expert guidance to avoid complications and give exceptional results. A trained doctor will check your skin type, understand your goals, and recommend the best method suitable for you," said Dr Chause. (Photo: Freepik)

Instead of risking your health with unsafe DIY remedies, it is wise to trust a professional for long-term beauty and safety. Remember, your lips deserve care, not experiments. So, pay utmost attention to the lips just like you pay to the other parts of the body. Don’t just blindly follow any trend that is not backed by experts, said Dr Chause.
