From brilliantly coloured barbets to striking mountain songbirds, the region is home to some of the most beautiful Himalayan bird species you can spot in the wild.

Blue Whistling Thrush: Famous for its haunting whistles echoing through misty hillsides, this deep blue bird with speckled feathers is often spotted near mountain streams and forest edges.

Eurasian Hoopoe: With its dramatic fan-shaped crest and black-and-white striped wings, the Eurasian Hoopoe is one of the most recognisable birds in the region. It’s often seen around tea gardens and open fields.

Oriental Magpie-Robin: Locally called the “Dhobini Chari,” this elegant black-and-white bird is admired for its melodious songs and lively tail movements around streams and village edges.

Scarlet Minivet: One of the most striking birds of the Eastern Himalayas, the Scarlet Minivet dazzles with fiery red plumage in males and bright yellow-orange shades in females. These birds are often seen moving swiftly through forest canopies.

Sunbird: Kalimpong’s forests and flowering gardens are home to dazzling sunbirds with metallic plumage in shades of purple, green, and crimson. These tiny nectar-feeding birds are among the region’s most colourful sightings.
