Remembering Nargis Dutt on her 86th birth anniversary

On the 86th birth anniversary of Nargis, Google Doodle paid tribute to one of the finest actors in Indian cinema.

Veteran actress Nargis, born as Fatima Rashid on June 1, 1929, is greatly remembered for her contribution to Hindi cinema in both commercial as well as critically acclaimed films. She was married to late Sunil Dutt and had three children – Sanjay Dutt, Namrata Dutt and Priya Dutt.

Nargis died in 1981 of pancreatic cancer, a few days before her son Sanjay Dutt made his debut in Hindi films.

Today being her 86th birth anniversary, Google Doodle paid tribute to one of the finest actors in Indian cinema. A drawing of the late actress holding her dupatta with both hands is featured in the place of the Google logo.

Nargis was born in Kolkata into a Punjabi family. She wan introduced to the film world by her mother Jaddanbai, who was a classical music singer. Nargis had a half-brother, Anwar Hussain who was also an actor.

Nargis joined films at an early age, making her first onscreen appearance in 1935 film, ‘Talash-e-Haq’. She was just six years old at the time. She later acted in a number of films from the age of 14, including ‘Taqdeer’ opposite Motilal.

A year after her death, the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation was established in her memory in 1982.

Some of Nargis’ notable works in late 1940s and 50s included ‘Barsaat’, ‘Andaz’, ‘Awaara’, ‘Deedar’, ‘Shree 420’ and ‘Chori Chori’ - all with Raj Kapoor.

Nargis had a special pairing with actor Raj Kapoor in a number of films including ‘Aag’, ‘Awaara’ and ‘Shree 420. The couple was also reportedly romantically involved. However, Raj Kapoor was married with children at the time. When he refused to divorce his wife, reports have it that Nargis apparently ended the relationship.

One of her best-known roles was that of Radha in "Mother India" (1957), a performance that won her Best Actress trophy at the Filmfare Awards.

Nargis later married Sunil Dutt in 1958. It is said that Sunil Dutt had saved her life when a fire broke out on the sets of ‘Mother India’.

The couple had three children together: Sanjay, Namrata, and Priya. Sanjay Dutt went on to become a successful film actor.

Namrata married actor Kumar Gaurav, son of veteran actor Rajendra Kumar who had appeared alongside both Nargis and Sunil Dutt in 'Mother India'.

Priya became a politician, and since 2005, has been a member of parliament.

Nargis was nominated to Rajya Sabha from 1980-81. However, it was during her tenure that she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and underwent treatment in New York. On her return to India, her condition deteriorated and she went into a coma on May 2. Nargis passed away on May 3, 1981.
