
Bollywood's leading ladies like their male counterparts are open to experimenting with the roles onscreen. Gone are the days when Bollywood beauties hesitated in portraying negative or dark roles on big screen. In the past Priyanka Chopra, Kajol, Katrina Kaif, Vidya Balan and many other actresses have done negative roles in their career. Newcomer Patralekhaa is also going to play a negative role in her upcoming movie Love Games, here's a list of Bollywood heroines who chose to break the stereotype and explore their dark side.

Patralekhaa (Love Games): Actress Patralekhaa, who made her debut with a hard-hitting film like ‘Citylights’, will be seen playing a role with shades of grey for a film titled ‘Love Games’. Vikram Bhatt, who initially decided to continue with the Murder franchise, has put it on hold in order to helm this new twisted and passionate story. The actress states that her character in ‘Love Games’ is quite the opposite of her as well as that of Rakhi (her role in Citylights).

Kajol (Gupt): Kajol broke the trend of playing only gentle and positive role in films. The actress played a an obsessive lover in Rajiv Rai's 'Gupt'. 'Gupt' helped her get a lot of awards and recognition. She became the first female actor to be nominated in the category of negative role and won the filmfare award in 1998.

Priyanka Chopra (Aitraaz): Next in line is the versatile actress Priyanka Chopra. Priyanka, who has been garnering applause for her role in American TV serial 'Quantico', also did a negative role in the initial days of her career. Her performance as the sizzling dominating boss in the movie 'Aitraaz' was well accepted and for this she also won an award in 2005.


Preity Zinta (Armaan): Bubbly Preity Zinta played Sonia in 'Armaan' who is a rich and arrogant schizophrenic woman used to have things her own way. The film received positive reviews and Preity was particularly praised for her performance for which she received nominations for Best Villain at different award ceremonies, including Filmfare.

Katrina Kaif (Race 2): Katrina Kaif for the first time played a negative character in 'Race 2', after stepping into Bollywood. Through this role, Katrina broke her sweet and goody image on screen. Fans also accepted her with open arms in this role.

Vidya Balan (Ishqiya): Be it any role, Vidya Balan has done justice to the role. The actress was seen in a negative role in 'Ishqiya' where she played a vamp for the first time on big screen. Vidya surely gave one of her finest performances.

Bipasha Basu (Jism): Bipasha Basu was very much liked for her negative role in 'Jism'. The actress got her much-deserved recognition after playing the role with dark shades in Jism. She was nominated for Filmfare Best Villain award.

Esha Koppikar (Qayamat): With the role played in the film, Esha Koppikar had became the toughest competitor to all the actors playing negative roles.
