Bollywood's original Khiladi Akshay Kumar has enjoyed a successful decade in Bollywood and has been accepted in the various roles he played. Akshay has braved perilous stunts in all his Khiladi films and charmed with his romantic hero image in films like 'Namastey London, Dhadkan to name a few. Akshay has proved his acting skills with films like 'Waqt: Race against Time, Special 26' and we have loved his comic timing in 'Housefull' and 'Hera Pheri'. As the actor turns 47 today, we take a look at his personal and professional life. (Express archive photo) Akshay Kumar aka Rajiv was born in Amritsar to army officer Hari Om Bhatia and Aruna Bhatia. Akshay has a sister Alka. From a very young age,he was recognised as a performer,particularly as a dancer. After having obtained a black belt in Taekwondo while in India,Akshay studied martial arts in Thailand,where he learned Muay Thai and worked as a chef and waiter. The couple has two children - 12 year-old son Aarav and daughter Nitara born on September 25,2012. Akshay,who is known to be a very a doting father,is often accompanied by Aarav on film shoots. Akshay even has son Aarav's name tattooed at the nape of his neck. In 2004,he was honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Award for his outstanding achievements in Bollywood. Their relationship was the talk of the town in 90s. In an interview Raveena Tandon had said: "We had a broken engagement. I can't say we're friends but were social acquaintances Whenever I bump into Akshay, we're cordial. There's no awkwardness between us anymore." The couple was going strong till Shilpa Shetty discovered that Akshay was cheating on her with actress Twinkle Khanna,who later on married Akshay. Post marriage too,there were reports of an affair with his 'Aitraaz' co-star Priyanka Chopra but the two denied these reports. The two have maintained a distance since their last outing together -- Waqt - The Race Against Time. His last known association was with his 'Singhh Is Kinng' actress Katrina Kaif. After their successful pairing in films like 'Namastey London,Welcome' rumours were doing round that the pair has gone from reel to real. However in an interview Akshay denied it out and out, adding: "Believe me if I was, I would be shouting it out from the rooftop." Talking about his professional life,Akshay Kumar made his Bollywood debut with the 1991 film Saugandh,which was followed by the very successful thriller Khiladi,his claim to fame. Akshay Kumar is often referred to as Bollywood's Khiladi courtesy the Khiladi series - comprising of eight films Khiladi (1992),Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994),Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995),Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996),Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi (1997),International Khiladi (1999),Khiladi 420 (2000),Khiladi 786 (2012). Akshay Kumar is famous for doing his stunts often without support cables and body-double. In Khiladi 420 Akshay Kumar performed some of his most dangerous stunts during a scene in the film. In Akshays own words: "I had to catch this running plane and climb it. People are scared of sitting inside a plane,and like a stupid man I am standing on top of a plane. And then Im supposed to jump from that plane,after it is a thousand feet up in the air,onto a hot air balloon. I did it in one shot." During the shooting of Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi,Akshay Kumar even broke his back while lifting Famous wrestler Undertaker during the pre-climax setting at the temple. In 1994,Akshay Kumar had as many as 11 releases. His action films Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Mohra were among the highest grossing films of the year. Later that year,Yash Chopra signed him for the romantic film Yeh Dillagi opposite Kajol. Akshay received critical appreciation for his performance,which was a fresh break from his action roles. The same year,Akshay Kumar tasted success with films like Suhaag and low budget action film Elaan. Thereby Akshay Kumar became the most successful actor of that year. Akshay's only hit that year was his Khiladi series film - Sabse Bada Khiladi. Next year,Akshay Kumars Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996) opposite Rekha and Raveena Tandon became one of the highest grossing films of the year. (Express archive photo) In 1997,AKshay Kumar was seen in a supporting role in Yash Chopra's hit film Dil To Pagal Hai,co-starring Shah Rukh Khan,Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor. He also received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award nomination. In the same year,he attempted a comedy role with his 5th film in the Khiladi series,Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi which unlike his previous films in Khiladi series failed commercially. From 1998-1999,Akshay went through a rough patch. However,in 1999,Akshay received critical acclaim for his role in Sangharsh and Jaanwar. While Sangharsh,also featuring Preity Zinta was not a commercial success,Jaanwar turned out to be a hit and marked his comeback. In 2000,he featured in Priyadarshan's comedy film Hera Pheri,which was a commercial success. He also starred in the romantic film Dhadkan later that same year which performed moderately at the box office. That same year,he performed some of his most dangerous stunts in Khiladi 420. In 2001,Akshay Kumar played his first negative role in the film Ajnabee,which won him much acclaim as well as his first Filmfare Award for Best Villain and IIFA award. Akshay also received appreciation for his portrayal of a blind man in Aankhen. Following Hera Pheri,in 2000s,Akshay Kumar starred in a number of comedy films,including Awara Paagal Deewana (2002),Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004),Garam Masala (2005),Phir Hera Pheri,Bhagam Bhaag (2006). Apart from his action,comedy and romantic roles,Akshay Kumar was seen in dramatic roles in films such as Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love (2001),Aankhen (2002),Khakee (2004),Bewafaa (2005) and Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005). Year 2007 proved to be Akshay Kumar's most successful year and has been described by box office analysts as "probably the best ever recorded by an actor,with four outright hits and no flops." His next two releases,Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa,were box office successes as well. Ashay Kumar's last release of the year,Welcome,did extremely well at the box office,receiving a blockbuster status. 2008 was a mixed year for Akshay. While his first film of 2008 Tashan with Kareena Kapoor,Saif Ali Khan bombed at the box office,his second film,Singh Is Kinng again with Katrina Kaif,went on to break the first-week worldwide record of Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om. In 2009,Akshay Kumars films failed to translate into good Box Office figures. The first was Chandni Chowk to China opposite Deepika Padukone. His next release was 8 x 10 Tasveer followed by Kambakkht Ishq with Kareena Kapoor and then Blue. Blue collected about Rs 42 crores at the box-office. Akshays last release that year was Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan . Akshay made a comeback in 2010 with hit comedy,Housefull ,which garnered the second-highest opening weekend collection of all time. Akshay Kumar's next release was Khatta Meetha ,directed by Priyadarshan which was an average grosser. He was also seen in Vipul Shah's Action Replayy with Aishwarya Rai,the film was a box office failure. His last film of 2010 was Tees Maar Khan . In 2011 he was seen in Patiala House and Thank You. His last film of 2011 was Rohit Dhawan's Desi Boyz ,was a moderate success at the box office. His first release of 2012 was Housefull 2,a sequel to his film,Housefull received mixed reviews from critics but was very successful at the box office. His next film Rowdy Rathore marked Akshay's return to action genre after seven years and was a huge box office success. His next film Joker bombed at Box Office. Akshay was then seen in a supporting role in Paresh Rawal starrer OMG! Oh My God. The film had a slow opening but because of word of mouth it picked up and then was declared a super hit. His last release in 2012 Khiladi 786 -- was the eighth installment in his Khiladi series after 12 years. The film was an above average grosser at the box office. His first release in 2013 was Special 26 which was a commercial and critical success at the box office. While his second release of 2013,Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara bombed at Box Office. But Boss, which marked his return to the action gwenre bombed at the box office. In 2014, Akshay Kumar delivered a massive hit with 'Holiday' opposite Sonakshi Sinha. The movie also entered the Rs 100 crore club. Next came a comedy - 'It's Entertainment' - which was a disaster at the box office.
