‘Bandit Queen’, ‘Water’: Movies who had to face bans or censor board’s axe

Bandit Queen, Fire, Water, Amu, Unfreedom and many more movies have had to face the axe of Censor Board for some or the other reason, but these movies should be watched for the reality they carry. Directors like Shekhar Kapur, Deepa Mehta, Anurag Kashyap, Sonali Bose have taken up real subjects for their film, but unfortunately they could not proceed by showcasing their films for the public.

Parzania - 2005

Directed by Rahul Dholakia, the 2005 release film 'Parzania' starred Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika in lead roles. The film was based on a real life incident of ten-year-old Parsi boy who disappeared after the February 28, 2002 Gulbarg Society massacre, during the communal riots in Gujarat in 2002. Since the film was based on the Gujarat riots, it did not screen in the state for some time.

Black Friday - 2006

Written and Directed by Anurag Kashyap, 'Black Friday' is a crime film on the 1993 Bombay bombings. The film had controversial content and the Censor Board had to hold it until three years, till the time TADA court gave its verdict on the case.

Bandit queen - 2004

With Seema Biswas playing the title role, the 'Bandit Queen' is based on the real life incidents of bandit turned politician Phoolan Devi. The film won many awards including National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie and Best Direction. It was not allowed to nominate at the 67th Academy Awards. The film directed by Shekhar Kapur released in 2004.

Amu , 2005

Starring Konkona Sen Sharma, 'Amu' directed by Shonali Bose was premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. Based on the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, the Censor Board cleared it with several cuts and "A" certificate. The movie was not eligible to telecast on television.

Unfreedon - 2015

An Indian drama by Raj Amit Kumar, 'Unfreedom' raked controversies even before its release. The film is a contemporary thriller that chronicles a lesbian love story set in New York and New Delhi and is said to be inspired by Faiz Ahmad Faiz’s poem, “Ye Dagh Dagh Ujala”. Censor board officials, emphasised that the movie had been denied a certificate by the Examining Committee (EC), but later a Revising Committee (RC) had agreed to give it ‘A’ certification with cuts.

Sins - 2005

A Vinod Pande film, 'Sins' featured Shiney Ahuja as a Catholic Priest who gets romantically involved with a young woman played by Seema Rahmani. Catholic Secular Forum stalled the film from playing in several theatres.

Water - 2007

Deepa Mehta's last film to her trilogy of 'Fire', 'Earth' and 'Water', also faced hurdles after its release. Featuring John Abraham and Lisa Ray in the lead roles, the film attracted protests from people who burnt the cinema halls that showcased the film.
