National Education Day 2019: Renowned foreign leaders who studied in Indian universities

Aung San Suu Kyi, the national counsellor of Myanmar and the Nobel Peace Prize winner has completed her graduation from an Indian university. She graduated from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. She fought for long to bring democracy in Burma.

Hamid Karzai, the former President of Afghanistan was a student of Himachal Pradesh University. He obtained his Master's degree in International Relations and Political Science from Himachal Pradesh University in 1983. Karzai became the president of the country for almost 10 years from 2004-2014.

Bingu Wa Mutharika, the former President of Malawi has his roots in India. He completed his graduation and post graduation from colleges in Delhi. Mutharika did his graduation from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi, and MA in Economics from Delhi School of Economics. He later obtained a PhD degree in Development Economics from Pacific Western University.

Olusegun Mathew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo was the former president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. The president took his military training in India, first at College of Military Engineering at Kirkee, and then Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He served as a military ruler from February 13, 1976 to October 1, 1979.

Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, the former Prime Minister of Fiji completed his military career from Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. Rabuka graduated in 1973 from New Zealand army schools, and later completed his Master's degree at the Indian Defence Services Staff College in 1979.

Baburam Bhattarai, the former Prime Minister of Nepal from August 2011 to March 2013. He studied at the Delhi School of Planning and Architecture for an M.Tech degree. He completed his PhD degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi) in 1986.

Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk, former King of Bhutan studied at the National Defence College, New Delhi. He was the former king of Bhutan. Khesar studied abroad at Philips Academy Andover with the class of 1998.

Lieutenant General Frederick William Kwasi Akuffo was a chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Force. He studied at the National Defence College, New Delhi.

General Hussain Muhammad Ershad served as the President of Bangladesh from 1983 to 1990. He trained in the National Defence College, New Delhi and served as the head of the Bangladeshi Army Chief. Ershad was conferred with the United Nations' Population Award in 1987 for his contributions to population and environmental issues. He passed away at 90.

The former Iranian foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki joined the army after completing his graduation. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Bangalore University in 1977.

John Samuel Malecela was the former Prime Minister of Tanzania from November 1990 to December 1994. The Prime Minister completed his graduation from the University of Bombay in 1959. He completed his Post Graduation from the University of Cambridge and PhD from University of Texas in 1977.
