While films are all about the art of telling stories and of course entertaining audiences, the Box Office collections form an important aspect of cinema, especially in an industry like Bollywood where over the past few years, an obsession has slowly formed with not just Friday numbers, but the much-coveted Rs 100 and 200 crore clubs. As soon as a film hits screens, there is intense scrutiny about it’s performance, taking into account daily earnings, opening days and weekends. With 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' and 'Baahubali' being the newest entrants to the Rs 200 and 300 crore club, here's a look at some of the highest grossers in India so far.
When Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani come together, you can expect nothing short of magic on the big screen and that's exactly what happened with ‘PK’. Though the film touched on the sensitive topic of religion, audiences thronged theatres to watch the satire. The film opened to good reviews and thanks to their great marketing strategy, audiences were curious about it way before it was complete. ‘PK’ emerged as the highest grosser of all time, earning Rs 260 million on its opening day. All in all, ‘PK’ collected Rs 735 crore worldwide.
Crime multi-starrer 'Dhoom 3', which is the third installment in the ‘Dhoom’ series, makes it at number 2 on the list of highest film grossers. Starring Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Uday Chopra, ‘Dhoom 3’ is said to be the most expensive Bollywood film of all time. Thanks to the fast-paced action and high-flying stunts, the film received positive reviews from critics. At the year of its release, the film was declared the biggest hit of 2013 in just two days. ‘Dhoom 3’ surpassed ‘3 Idiots’ in terms of collections, earning Rs 542 worldwide.
S S Rajamouli’s ambitious ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ is currently still running in theatres, however, the film’s revenue has been skyrocketing consistently. The film, which is said to be the most expensive film ever made in India cinema with a reported budget of about Rs 200 crore, was made in Telugu and Tamil and was dubbed into Hindi, Malayalam and French. Starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah Bhatia and Anushka Shetty, ‘Baahubali’ received good reviews and recorded the highest-grossing opening for an Indian film at the Box Office. It became the first non-Hindi film to gross over Rs 100 crore with regard to dubbed Hindi version in India. ‘Baahubali’ is also the first non-Hindi film to gross over Rs 500 crore worldwide.
Rohit Shetty has figured his foolproof formula to success in Bollywood and that is to make entertaining masala films for his beloved audiences. Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles, Rohit Shetty recreated the ‘Om Shanti Om’ magic in a hilarious love story between a man on a train and the daughter of a south Indian don. Though it received mixed reviews, ‘Chennai Express’ broke several records and collected Rs 422 crore worldwide.
Coming in close at number 4 is of course a Salman Khan starrer. With many touting this as one of the actor's best performances, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ was released on what has proved to be extremely lucky for Salman Khan – the festival of Eid. Directed by Kabir Khan, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ had audiences flocking to theatres to watch their favourite superstar. It opened to positive reviews from critics, making it Salman Khan’s biggest hit till date. It broke several Box Office records including the first week record of ‘PK’ and ‘Happy New Year’. Also starring Kareena Kapoor and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ has collected Rs 400 crore so far. However, this number is expected to rise as the film is running in cinemas.
Based on Chetan Bhagat’s ‘Five Point Someone’, ‘3 Idiots’ successfully struck a chord with audiences as the young and old raved about this film and the performances of the cast – Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. The Raju Hirani directed film broke all opening Box Office records upon its release. It was the highest-grossing film in its opening weekend in India and had the highest opening day collections for a Bollywood film. It also topped the list for highest net collections in the first week for a Bollywood film. During its run, '3 Idiots' collected a worldwide total of Rs 395 crore.
This Bollywood heist film, ‘Happy New Year’ had an ensemble cast of Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah and Jackie Shroff. The film released on the occasion of Diwali in three different languages – Hindi, Tamil and Telugu across 3850 screens in India, which was said to the biggest release for a Hindi film in the country. Though it opened to mixed and negative reviews from critics, Farah Khan directed 'Happy New Year' set the record for collecting Rs 400 million, making it the first Bollywood film to reach the figure in a single day. It made Rs 383 crore worldwide.
Another Salman Khan starrer on the list of highest grossers is Sajid Nadiadwala's action flick 'Kick', also starring the beautiful Jacqueline Fernandez and the talented Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Declared a blockbuster, ‘Kick’ earned Rs 260 million on its opening day, making it the second highest non-holiday opener after ‘Dhoom 3’. Overseas as well the film performed quite well, earing Rs 24.05 crore in the first four days. ‘Kick’ collected Rs 377 crore worldwide. Kick was also released on Eid last year.
After seeing success with the first two installments, Rakesh Roshan made 'Krrish 3' – the story of Rohit Mehra, a scientist and Krishna Mehra a.k.a. Krrish, the superhero son, starring his own son, Hrithik Roshan as the lead character. The film also starred Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Vivek Oberoi. Reportedly produced on a budget of Rs 1.15 billion, 'Krrish 3' opened to mixed reviews from critics. It had a good opening with Rs 204 million on first day. 'Krrish 3' performed well overseas also, making close to 46.9 million in ten days. Worldwide, 'Krrish 3' collected Rs 374 crore.
Another Hrithik Roshan starrer to make it to the list of highest Bollywood grossers is Siddharth Anand’s ‘Bang Bang’. Also starring Katrina Kaif, the action thriller featured some intense stunts and speed chases that made it a hit with the adventure loving audiences and there was just enough romance for the mush lovers. Though it failed to get highly positive reviews from critics, ‘Bang Bang’ was declared a semi hit at the Box Office. ‘Bang Bang’ had a fabulous first day, grossing around Rs 248 million in Hindi, Rs 12.5 million in Tamil and Telugu. The film made Rs 340 crore worldwide.
Kabir Khan’s action spy film starring former couple Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan had people awaiting its release right from the time that it was announced, owning to the chemistry between the lead duo. Following the tale of how an Indian spy falls in love with a Pakistani spy, 'Ek Tha Tiger' was released on August 15. It opened to mixed reviews from critics, but it had extremely strong Box Office collections, making it an ‘All time Blockbuster’. It was announced as the most successful Yash Raj Film’s release and opened with 100% occupancy at multiplexes and single-screen cinemas. It collected Rs 335 million on its opening day, getting it to a worldwide total of Rs 320 cror
Another film featuring former lovers as the lead pair was 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' along with Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film received much critical acclaim and was a huge success at the Box Office. It had a huge opening and holds the record for the fourth biggest opening of all time and highest for a non-holiday release after collecting Rs 198.1 million on its first day. 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' made a worldwide collection of Rs 311 crore.
