Week after violence in JNU campus,FIR lodged against students

The police have registered an FIR against several Jawaharlal Nehru University students for last Sunday’s violence on the campus.

The police have registered an FIR against several Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students for last Sunday’s violence on the campus.

Police officials said a case of rioting,stopping a policeman from doing his duty,destruction of property,and causing voluntary hurt was registered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station against several students. Officials said the students are being identified and arrests will follow soon.

Students clashed with police personnel last Sunday after a group of students tried to stop the cops from transporting four youths accused of creating ruckus and passing lewd comments on a female student. The suspects were reportedly inebriated.

The students smashed windows of the Hyundai Accent car of the accused and set it on fire. They also pelted stones and bottles at police personnel,resulting in injuries to 33 policemen.

Bail for accused
The four youths accused of molesting a a JNU student last Sunday were granted bail on Monday.

Additional Sessions Judge Chandra Gupta allowed the bail applications of Nitin Kapoor (a hotel management student),Gagan Kumar (former JNU student),Ankit Nanda (a chartered accountant) and Amit Chauhan (manager at a mall). They were asked to furnish a personal and surety bond of Rs 20,000 each.

They have been booked for molestation,trespass and consuming liquor at a public place,in addition to voluntarily causing hurt.

JNU orders inquiry
JNU Vice-Chancellor B B Bhattacharya ordered a proctorial inquiry on Monday to identify students who were part of the violence. This follows the report of a fact-finding committee that said a certain section of students had provoked the police. The report,submitted on Friday and examined by Bhattacharya on Monday,does not name individual students. It also does not recommend punitive action.
