“The success of Sandeep Kaur in the UPSC Civil Services exam is an answer to the problem of female foeticide in the state. It shows how a literate and empowered woman can make a difference in society,” said Rajya Sabha MP Avinash Rai Khanna,while honouring Kaur,a peon’s daughter from Morinda,who secured the 138th rank,on Monday.

At a special function held at Gurdwara Ravidass here,Khanna asked Kaur to gear herself up for the forthcoming responsibilities as an administrator.

“One should never forget his or her roots. People expect the best from you and try to live up to their expectations,” Khanna told her. Kaur was presented with a shawl and clock.

In her address,Kaur reiterated that TV serial Udaan based on top cop Kiran Bedi’s life prompted her to choose the Civil Services. The eldest of four siblings,the 29-year-old is the daughter of Ranjit Singh,a peon in the revenue department.

Belonging to the Scheduled Caste category,Kaur said her success should encourage other Dalit students in the state. “Dalits are a downtrodden section in our society and the education of girls is almost unheard of but I wanted to change this notion and have succeeded,” said the engineering graduate from Punjab Engineering College (PEC),Chandigarh.

Ambala boy gets 110th rank
Ambala City lad Mohit Chawla got 110th rank in the examination of UPSC. He was selected in the first attempt and that too without getting guidance from any academy or educational institution. Son of a cloth merchant Jagdish Lal Chawla from Ambala city,Mohit,a gold medalist in economics,is at present working as a bank manager.

Civil judge lands at 387 spot
Amanjit Singh,a resident of Chandigarh,has made it to the Indian Revenue Services (IRS).

The 29-year-old is already a Delhi Judicial Service (DJS) officer,posted as Civil Judge-cum-Metropolitan Magistrate at Tees Hazari Court in Delhi.

He ranked 387 in the All India Civil Services Examination,the result of which was declared a few days ago.

“I will leave the judicial service to join the Civil Services,which was my ultimate goal,” says Amanjit. While his grandfather had retired as an acting chief justice of Delhi High Court,his father Gurjit Singh is a practicing lawyer at the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh.

Speaking to Newsline over phone from Delhi,where he presently stays with his better half Sahiba,Amanjit said,“It was a difficult decision to make but Civil Services remained my passion since my childhood.”

He,however,added that he was satisfied with the judicial service as well.

Amanjit completed his schooling from Yadavindara Public School in Mohali before getting a law degree from the Army Institute of Law in Mohali.

A native of Chandigarh,he had cleared DJS in June 2009 and had joined service on July 11.

“My parents are my strength and my wife always encouraged me to compete for the Civil Services,” said Amanjit.
