Relieved after Londons Dix Noonam Webb scrapped the auction of the George Cross Medal of Naik Kirpa Ram,Himachal Pradesh has begun efforts to bring the medal back to India.
We have downloaded Ashok Naths profile from the internet. We will soon get in touch with him to work out the modalities of how this prestigious medal can be brought back to India, Additional Director General of Police I D Bandar said.
Some retired Armymen and war widows have suggested that the government buy the medal at the current international price and keep it in its custody by setting up a trust. They also suggested that Rams widow Brahmi Devi be given an annual grant so that she doesnt have to live in an impoverished condition. Devi has agreed to let the state or central government take custody of the medal if it is brought back.
Ashok Nath,a retired colonel and author of Izzat – Historical Records and Iconography of Indian Cavalry Regiments ( 1750-2007) has suggested that a National Army Museum be set up to keep and display rare items like swords, medals, belts and turbans made of golden threads.
BJP MP Anurag Thakur, who had raised the issue in Lok Sabha prompting the Ministry of External Affairs to alert the Indian High Commissioner in London, has expressed concern about smuggling of rare items out of the country.
