THE Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday issued showcause notices to Banaur MLA Jasjit Singh Banni, councillors of Dera Bassi Municipal Council (MC) and its executive officer,Sarabjit Singh, asking them to explain why contempt of court proceedings be not initiated against them.

The councillors against whom showcause notices have been issued are Tara Chand,Anita Dhiman,Seema Sharma,Vipin Kumar Thaman,Geeta Jain,Hari Om Dhiman,Ajmer Kaur,Ranjna Saini and Baljinder Kaur.

On May 2,the high court had stayed a meeting, which was to be convened by nine councillors of Dera Bassi MC,to allegedly pass a no-confidence motion against MC president Manjeet Kaur. Also, notices were issued to the nine Councillors and Shri Akali Dal (SAD) MLA Jasjeet Singh Bunny. Despite the directions, the councillors allegedly went ahead with the meeting.

The petitioner,Manjeet Kaur, had contended that the councillors had convened a meeting 21 days ago on the same issue but failed to remove her from the post of president. She had averred that as per rules, councillors can convene a meeting only after six months.
