Villagers to decide on Sunday whether to let dumpers enter depot
Garbage is not being removed from many parts of the city these days owing to the ongoing agitation of the Uruli Devachi and Phursungi villagers who are not letting garbage dumpers enter the depot site.
The villagers are slated to hold a meeting on Sunday to decide whether to let dumpers enter the garbage depot.
Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal said the chairperson of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board Valsa Nair-Singh was also likely to visit the villages next week to hold talks with the civic authorities and villagers.
A meeting of party leaders at PMC has also been convened on Wednesday,in which we will address the garbage depot issue on priority, Rajpal said. Standing committee chairman Nilesh Nikam also paid a visit to the depot and interacted with the villagers on Saturday. The situation of garbage this year is worse than last year. The amount of garbage and plastic that has piled up at the depot is huge. Therefore, the villagers now want that the corporators who are a part of the decision-making process in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to come to the site and get the first-hand knowledge about the problems that villagers have to face daily and especially during the times of fires, Dilip Mehta, member of Garbage Depot Hatao Committee.
Deputy Sarpanch of Phursungi Sanjay Harpale said,We still continue to ban the entry of garbage vehicles to the depot.
Despite that a few vehicles managed to dump the garbage from another route that comes from Mantarwadi. But when we got to know about that,we prevented any more vehicles from entering.
On the other hand, the fire brigade has been trying to douse the fire at garbage depot that broke out a couple of days back.
We have managed to keep the fire under control and we also sent about 300 tonnes of biodegradable garbage to farmers as manure. , said a fire brigade official.
