More power purchased at lower rates

Better management by the team of Powercom has resulted in minimum powercuts this paddy season. This was stated by K D Chaudhary,CMD,Powercom, who had come to the city on Saturday for an industrial interaction at CICU complex at Focal Point. According to officials, the total availability of power as of now is 1,695 lakh units against the demand of about 1,855 LU. Last year, available power from all sources was not more than 1450 LUs. Early signing of agreements with companies resulted in more purchase of power and power was purchased without involving any trader and hence better rates were available, said sources. Purchase from Central pool this paddy season increased to up to 850 LUs against 590 LUs of last year. The industrialists of chamber of industrial and commercial undertakings (CICU) also appreciated lesser powercuts this season.

Chaudhary, meanwhile, announced that there will be sufficient power by 2013 and Punjab will be selling power to other states in 2014. Advance power schedule will be intimated through SMS. A total of 1.92 crore CFLs will be replaced in the state by December 2010,which will save 500 MW power. Powercom will be spending Rs 2,000 crore for augmentation of power in 47 towns in Punjab. Customer care and call centres will be upgraded within a 12-18 months, added Chaudhary. Avtar Singh,General Secretary,CICU presented a memorandum to the CMD,requesting for issuing immediate instructions for waiver of NOC for electric connections in the mixed land use areas,as recently announced by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. He further requested for grant of peak load exemption to all the industrialists which at present is 3 hours per day.

He also asked that release of new connections should be done within 90 days of submission of application and providing advance intimation regarding schedule of power supply. Upkar Singh,Joint Secretary,CICU said power distribution losses in Punjab were about 28 per cent as compared to around 14 per cent at national level. Effective measures should be adopted to minimise these loses. Power theft should be made punishable offence,he added.
