Old memories and latest technology were the talk as the batch mates of the Engineer Officers Degree Engineering (EODE) 13th course met at their alma mater,College of Military Engineering (CME),on Saturday.
About 44 officers of the January 1958-60 batch,including one Burmese and a Nepalese officer,are on a three- day visit to their alma mater. A few of them were accompanied by their wives.
In his welcome speech,Lt Gen S S Sengupta,VSM,commandant,CME said,”I have been a student to many of the veterans present here. We welcome them with great pride as we continue to draw inspiration from them. A number of members of the batch are no longer with us and I assure you that the institute has not forgotten them.”
“We started the alumni meet last year with the 11th batch approaching us and are more than happy to be able to serve our veterans,” said Maj Gen Rajeev Datt,AVSM,VSM,Officiating Commandant CME.
The formal function began at 9 am with the screening of a film based on CME followed by the release of a special issue of CME weekly magazine. The issue was released by Brig retd Gurcharan Singh,AVSM,course senior of the batch. “It has been 50 years since then and the occasion calls for the Golden Jubilee celebrations,” said Singh.
Recalling old days,Col Retd Bunny D’Souza said,”During ours days here,we would visit Kwality restaurant on East Street in Camp. For movies,it used to be West End and Empire Cinemas. Today,we meet almost 50 years after completion of the course with a void in our hearts for those who couldn’t make the trip and poignant memories of those departed. May their souls rest in peace.”
The welcome ceremony was followed an official tour of the campus introducing the veterans to the modernisation that the institute underwent. Sailing,tennis,rowing,boating,golf,movie in the open air theater and other social events were also organised to celebrate the golden jubilee of the course. The veterans also interacted with Lt General S S Sengupta.
