Uncertainty prevailed in state government circles about the Tripartite talks convened by the Centre between the West Bengal government,Union government and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) in New Delhi on July 24. While Chief Secretary Ardhendu Sen said the state government would be represented at the meeting by Urban Development Minister Ashok Bhattacharya,Health minister Surya Kanta Mishra and Home Secretary Samar Ghosh,Bhattacharya said categorically that he would not be participating in the meet and that its prospects were bleak.
The Tripartite meeting on July 24 is on and the state government will be represented by ministers Ashok Bhattacharya abd Surya Kanta Mishra and Home secretary Samar Ghosh, Sen said on Tuesday.
Asked whether Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had written to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram asking him to postpone the meeting,Sen replied,I have read it in the newspapers.
Bhattacharya, however, confirmed that the Chief Minister had indeed written to the Union home minister seeking a postponement of the Tripartite meeting. There is no question of my attending the meeting. I dont know how the chief secretary could say this. The Chief Minister has written to Chidambaram asking him to postpone the meeting and nothing will be done unless and until an answer comes. There can be no meeting with those who have been accused of murder charges, Bhattacharya told The Indian Express.
The All India Gorkha League (AIGL),too, has written to the Centre with the same request. The people whose hands have been smeared with the blood of our leader,Madan Tamang, are going to attend the meeting…. This is quite unfortunate, Gorkha League General Secretary L. N. Pradhan told The Indian Express earlier.
Bharati Tamang, widow of Madan Tamang and the Leagues president, has already threatened to go on a fast unto death if the GJM is called for talks.
