Hundreds of activists of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner office in Phase I here Thursday.

Up in arms against corruption and inflation, which they alleged has reached an all time high in the present Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, the Akali leaders sought an immediate dismissal of the Union government and a probe into the major scams unearthed during the present regime by a sitting Supreme Court judge.

Addressing the protesters,MLAs Ujjagar Singh Badali (Morinda),Jasjit Singh Bunny (Banur) and Mohali District Planning Committee Chairman-cum-SAD joint secretary NK Sharma said the present Union government has turned out to be a “burden” on the country’s exchequer and it needs to be immediately dismissed.

Recalling the spate of major scams involving 2-G Spectrum,Common Wealth Games and Adarsh Housing Scheme, the SAD leaders accused the Congress leaders of “stashing” their “black money” in foreign countries. “The entire black money stashed abroad should be retrieved and the names of all those possessing the ill-gotten wealth should be made public,” they demanded. Seeking action against those involved in adulteration, they sought immediate control on the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.
