4 undertrials escape from Mathura jail,seven officers suspended

Four undertrials lodged in the Mathura district jail escaped on Sunday by scaling the boundary wall with the help of a saree.

Four undertrials lodged in the Mathura district jail escaped on Sunday by scaling the boundary wall with the help of a saree.

In the evening when jail officials were doing the inmate headcount,they discovered that Sachin,Yogesh,Avadhesh and Ajay Kumar were missing.

Seven persons,including Mathura Jail Superintendent Anita Dubey,have been suspended for negligence of duty. While three officials have been suspended by the state government,the other four have been placed under suspension by the UP Prisons department. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered into the incident.

Additional Superintendent of Police,Mathura,Ramlal Verma said,“We were informed by jail authorities that the undertrials scaled two walls,9 feet and 18 feet high. Inside the jail,we found the saree used by them (to escape).”

IG (Prison) Sulkhan Singh said: “The picture would be clear after a detailed inquiry.”

The state government has announced a reward of Rs 50,000 to anyone who provides information about the four undertrials.

Sachin and Yogesh were lodged in jail since 2009 on charges registered under the Gangster Act.

While Yogesh had been held in a case of loot,Ajay Kumar and Avadhesh were named in cases of murder and attempt to murder,respectively.
