15 foetuses found in garbage bin,doctor held

Fifteen foetuses,of which seven are suspected to be female,were found abandoned in a garbage bin near Shastri Stadium at Bapunagar area of Ahmedabad on Monday.

Fifteen foetuses,of which seven are suspected to be female,were found abandoned in a garbage bin near Shastri Stadium at Bapunagar area of Ahmedabad on Monday. The police arrested Dr Jayant Patel later in the evening,who was running Punaa Maternity Home near Bapunagar Char Rasta.

State Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas said in addition to police investigation,the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) Health department has also been asked to inquire into the matter.

The Bapunagar police said the discarded foetuses were packed in used bottles.

Investigating Officer,Inspector R G Pandya said: “The foetuses were properly wrapped and stuffed into bottles and then dumped in the AMC garbage bin adjacent to the stadium. There is an SRPF camp near the stadium,but no one noticed when it happened”.

He added: “It clearly indicates that they have been dumped from a hospital or a dispensary. We have learnt that Patel was shifting his clinic to a new premises.”

The police are checking up with the nearby hospitals and dispensaries. A team comprising a gynaecologist from Odhav Health Centre and health officers from three zones near Bapunagar is inspecting every nursing home.”

Meanwhile,the police have registered a case under Section 318 of the Indian Penal Code for concealment of birth by secret disposal of body.

Harshad Patel,a social activist who informed the police about the foetuses,said: “A person who noticed a foetus in the waste bin alerted us. We later informed the police. The foetuses were kept in small glass bottles. Some of them were probably seven to eight months old.”

He added: “Additionally,two bottles containing preserved sperm were also found at the spot; one of these was broken.”

AMC Medical Officer Dr S P Kulkarni said: “The AMC is finding out if the nearby nursing homes and maternity homes are registered under the Pre-conception and Pre- Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act. The samples of the foetuses have been sent to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for further tests.”
