There are 38 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu. In the 2014 general elections, DMK had won 23 seats, INC 8, VCK 1, CPM 2, CPI 2, IUML 1, and ADMK 1. BJP had registered a historic mandate in the last elections, winning 282 seats - an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha. The Congress was reduced to its worst-ever tally, winning only 44 constituencies. Riding on Modi wave and a strong anti-incumbency against the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, the saffron party came back to power after 2004, when the party had faced a crushing defeat.
