Social Buzz: PM Modi meditates, Priyanka Gandhi’s ‘sasuma’, and more
Here's what is buzzing the internet today
(Express Archives) With the Lok Sabha election entering its final voting phase on June 1, PM Modi’s meditation sparks debate, while Congress’ Rahul Gandhi uses onomatopoeia to connect. Priyanka Gandhi credits her mother-in-law for teaching her the essence of “Punjabiyat” and the valuable lesson not to yield to the world’s demands. Here’s what netizens are buzzing about today
1) Phir ek baar, Modi sarkar?
The BJP is confident that the ‘Modi juggernaut’ will bring the Prime Minister Narendra-Modi led BJP another hattrick in the general elections. To them victory seems inevitable, as evidenced through their slogan ‘Abki baar 400 paar.’ As election day nears, they’ve unveiled a cartoon, an advanced celebration of triumph, proclaiming: “अगले मंगलवार, फिर एक बार मोदी सरकार…” (Next Tuesday, once again, Modi government…)

2) The PM’s ‘Tapasya’: Meditation or cry for ‘media attention’?
Videos and images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi immersing himself in a 45-hour meditation have polarised the internet. Taking to X, the BJP says: “In India, spirituality has never been so powerful! In India, leaders in power have never been so spiritual!” His detractors, however, have dubbed the “meditation” as a cry for “media-attention” given that the endeavor was filmed and put on social media.

3) “Khatakhat”, “Takatak”: The soundtrack of Congress’ campaign
In the run-up to the elections, Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party have adopted an unusual campaign strategy – relying heavily on onomatopoeia, or the imitation of sounds through words, to connect with voters on a more visceral, auditory level. The Congress leader has been using sounds like “Khatakhat” and “Takatak” to drive home his party’s promises of immediate financial gains through their welfare schemes.

4) What Priyanka Gandhi learnt from her “sasuma”?
Campaigning in Punjab, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi called Punjabis her ‘sasural wale’. She said that her in-laws, who hail from Sialkot and migrated to India during the Partition, were quintessential Punjabis. Recalling the early days of her marriage, Priyanka shared that she made great efforts to please her mother-in-law, but no matter what she did, her mother-in-law remained unsatisfied. Priyanka later realized that her mother-in-law was imparting an important lesson: “Tum dab jaogi toh duniya tumhe dabayegi, tum jhuk jaogi toh duniya time jhukayegi” (The more you bend, the more the world will ask you to bend. If you yield, the world will continue to make you yield.)” Priyanka credited her mother-in-law for teaching her the true essence of “Punjabiyat.”
