“Pehle jab tak maa zinda thi mujhe lagta tha shayad mujhe biologically janm diya gaya hai. Maa ke jaane ke baad, ye saare anubhavon ko mai jod kar dekhta hoon toh mai convince ho chukka hoon ki parmatma ne mujhe bheja hai (Till my mother was alive, I had the impression that perhaps my birth was a biological one. After her demise when I view after assimilating all the experiences, I am convinced that God has sent me),” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during an interview to a television channel last week.
However, little did he know that the comments would bear the brunt of backlash from the Opposition. While Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at the Prime Minister, incumbent Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor had a question for the Election Commission.
Innocent question: can a divine being be eligible for citizenship in India, and if not, does He have the right to vote or to contest elections? Could @ECISVEEP look into the question of a self-proclaimed divinity participating in the electoral fray? pic.twitter.com/OAmF7d7VKA

“Innocent question: can a divine being be eligible for citizenship in India, and if not, does He have the right to vote or to contest elections? Could @ECISVEEP look into the question of a self-proclaimed divinity participating in the electoral fray?” Tharoor wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s statement, Rahul Gandhi said that while bodies were piling up on the banks of Ganges, the “messenger of god” had asked people to turn on their mobile phone flashlights. “Kanhaiya Kumar has a lot of knowledge on a wide range of topics. But even if he were to come one day and confide in me he was not biological and was sent by God, I would ask him with folded hands not to tell it to anyone or say this out loud, even by mistake. But the Prime Minister is openly saying he is not biological,” Rahul said while addressing an election rally.
DMK leader A Raja, too, had a comment over the PM’s statement, saying that he now understood why Periyar said “God does not exist”. Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra said that the BJP should have consecrated idols of Narendra Modi in temples instead of Lord Ram. “Just saw a clip of Narendra Modi telling us that now that his mother is no more, he truly believes he was born not human but divine, sent to earth to redeem us all. Why Ram Lalla, BJP should be consecrating NaMo Lallas in all temples,” she said.
