Money for farm loan waiver will come from Nirav, Mallya: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul also hit back at PM Narendra Modi’s jibe that only “one family” was “weeping” over note ban, saying that demonetisation had only affected the poor and allowed the rich to get away scot-free.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday promised to waive farm loans in Chhattisgarh within 10 days of assuming power in the state and said the money for it would come from the “likes of Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Anil Ambani”. Addressing three rallies, the Congress chief said: “As soon as the Congress forms the government here, Modi ji you can count 10 days. The Congress will waive off loans of each farmer in Chhattisgarh within 10 days… Modiji, the money for the loan waiver for Chhattisgarh’s farmers will come from the likes of Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, Anil Ambani…We will take their money and implement the loan waiver.”

Rahul also hit back at PM Narendra Modi’s jibe that only “one family” was “weeping” over note ban, saying that demonetisation had only affected the poor and allowed the rich to get away scot-free. “Modi ji had said he would fight against black money. He had (recently) said those who had stashed money in their houses and or kept it hidden under pillows were thieves and that he had taken action against them. I want to tell you that you have not committed any theft. The person who has committed a theft is Narendra Modi. He made the honest people stand in queues. Have you ever seen those wearing suit-boot and crorepatis standing in queues?” Rahul said.

He also targeted Modi for claiming that it was in the culture of the Congress to make false claims. “The intention of the Congress is very clear. It never makes false promises. In fact, you can listen to my speeches of the last 15 years. I never made false promises. Whatever I promised, I fulfilled it,” he said, referring to policy measures such as Right to Food Act, MNREGA, Right to Information and Land Acquisition Bill.

“On the contrary, Modi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh did not fulfil the promises they had made to the farmers,” he said. Rahul said in 2013, BJP promised to give farmers 2,100 per quintal for paddy and Rs300 per annum support price, and said the party-led government had failed to give the support price, and had disbursed paddy bonus for only three years in its five-year term.

The Congress, in its manifesto, has announced Rs 2,500 per annum for paddy. It has also assured to pay the two-year bonus that was not given by the Raman Singh government.

“In the last four-and-a-half years, Modi ji has waived loans worth Rs 3.50 lakh crore of a few rich people, but he has not spoken about farm loan waiver. Similarly, Raman Singh has snatched the bonus of the farmers,” he alleged.
He said while the PM spoke of corruption, he remained silent on charges against CM Singh, while alleging that names of Singh and his wife surfaced in the alleged Rs 36,000-crore civil supply scam.“A Rs 5,000-crore chit fund scam was also perpetrated. His son Abhishek Singh was named in Panama Papers scandal, but no action was taken in any of these cases.”
